Roger suggested a song to Joni that he wanted her to perform in the upcoming concert, but she told him she'd prefer to do a different one. He agreed and re-arranged the line-up of singers and songs to accommodate her. Joni also requested that she be sent a tape of the backing tracks so she could practice. Joni was joined onstage by flutist James Galway, performing with a pre-recorded backing track on the song "Goodbye, Blue Sky." She also re-appeared at the finale and sang a few solo lines for "The Tide Is Turning" clustered with Sinead O'Connor, Thomas Dolby and Bryan Adams at one side of an elevated platform. I wore out a cassette tape I had of her eponymous album by playing "Candles in the Rain" full blast every morning to pump myself up to attend the all white (except me), affluent military institution in Texas where I went to high school." This reminded me of a recent humorous (to me) exchange I had with my 17 year old son. He has evidenced a growing interest in the music of my generation - -thank god the Whitesnake, Quiet Riot days are past- and he was exploring my old vinyl recordings. His reaction to Joni was basically "great lyrics, chick music, voice hard to get used to". He pronounced Neil Young "strange and brilliant". Then his last comment was "and who is this Melanie chick?" I had to laugh because I didn't realized until he dragged them out that I must have ALL her albums. Wow, I remember listening to her for hours on end when I was about 19-20 and pouring out my angst. But then I discovered Joni. It's still my favourite of hers, although NY Tendaberry and Xmas & the Beads of Sweat are as close as makes no difference. Like Joni, she never made a bad record, and her voice remained strong right up to the end (I would add unlike Joni, except I don't want to start that whole debate again, as it's not time for us to have it again :-) Associated memory: a radio presenter on GLR used to have a feature on his show called "the greatest record ever made and not played on the radio". I was on a motorway once with my brother and his wife, and he switched on the radio to get the traffic news, and I swear that the moment he switched on, the presenter introduced the feature and played Poverty Train, which I'd phoned in to request weeks ago, and had virtually forgotten about. That was a great Laura Moment. The other was seeing her live, at what must have been her last UK show, and also her first for over 20 years, at a beautiful venue called the Union Chapel. What a great woman. Conceding that she is not the queen of all female singer-songwriters!!! I'm going to get Tendaberry as soon as I can. What of Nyro's should I get after that? You should RUN to get Nyro's "New York Tendaberry." After that, run to get the other two in her classic trilogy, "Eli And The Thirteenth Confession" and "Christmas And The Beads Of Sweat." I've noticed in the brief time I've been on board JMDL, several people mention Nyro's profound influence--Wally K. & Gary Z. among them. In fact, we can't really decide who we love more. Like Joni, Laura is truly brilliant. I think she even accomplished some things Joni never could. Leonard Bernstein, Miles Davis and Bob Dylan were also huge Nyro-nuts. If you think Nyro only composed simple pop songs (i.e., "Wedding Bell Blues," etc.) you're sadly misinformed. That's like saying Joni never went beyond "Big Yellow Taxi" or "Both Sides Now." Or that Dylan never expanded beyond "Blowin' In The Wind." As Tommy Mottola (of Sony) told Billboard at the time of her death, 'There was no one else like her--before or since.'
