What a special person you are Wally to come forward and do this for Colin and John. I want to mention the following especially: wally wrote to Colin: <> This is precisely one of the many things I love about you Colin. You are so brave. You have been through so much in your life and you are still here. Oh courageous warrior, you speak from your mind, your heart, your soul and you stand true to your convictions no matter what anyone says, no matter how hard someone might try to knock you off balance, there you are. You exemplify what it is to love and be loved and I am so happy for you that you have found the love of your life. Because of my Brei, I know how that feels and it is the most precious and special place to be. Over a year ago now, when I first joined this list, you and i recognized each other as kindred spirits. You offered me friendship & comradery when I was feeling small and incredibly shy about being here . You have always been a good listener and friend. You generously offered support and concern when Brian was going through his surgery earlier this year. I will never forget that. I did write to you offlist when you first mentioned your anniversary, and I will join in the chorus to wish you and John many more years of love within the sanctuary of each other's arms. lots of love, Mags - -- And this loving is a drawing close, a tuning in, an opening. Until one perfect moment; but how can it be expressed? A receiving, an enfolding as I cradle you in my arms. Within my heart, within my soul, You are my true love. --Lui Collins - --- _~O / /\_, ___/\ /_ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Jul 2001 08:20:17 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: A burning question!! Dressed to Kill's strategy appears to be to get performers that no one has heard of and do extremely uncreative knock-offs, add minimal packaging and call it a tribute. That way they can sell it for cheap. I of course had to get it as I am the ultimate Joni covers whore! As a whole, this CD rates about a D+. I DO appreciate the fact that there's a cover of "Chinese Cafe" on it besides the predictable ones. And the "Chelsea Morning" arrangement is interresting, I don't know if it's intentionally creative, or if Mr. Willey can't hit the notes (CM DOES get UP THERE you know...). Anyway, in MY opinion you'd do MUCH better to buy some blanks and snag some copies of our "Covers" collection. I've always liked his work, and I'm really glad that a couple of people on this list have actuaully seen the wonderful Brewster McCloud. I have never met anyone in person who has seen it! Such a strange and funny film, I've seen it on VHS in older video stores. Definately worth hunting for. I also saw the NY Times magazine interview with Bud Cort. He did seem bitter, and at first I was chalking it up to his being remembered most for a movie he did 30 years ago. It seems fairly common for someone who is known for one thing to get tired of constantly having to talk about it. Then I recalled that he has had some hard times. I don't know if I have this right, but I believe that Bud Cort was in a near-fatal car accident a couple of years after he made Harold & Maude, right when his career was taking off. Apperantly his face was left pretty scarred, forcing him to wear a beard to hide the scars. His being out of work for a couple of years of recovery coupled with the decline of his baby-face looks pretty much ended his career. Is this story true? It does seem that his career fizzled out right when it should have taken off. Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! First of all I am now "jonesing" for Harold & Maude. And soon after I am done here I will pluck it from the cabinet and jam it into my VCR. I think that for me, the reason I love this film so much is it speaks to anyone who is not within the "social norm" (whatever that is), and reaffirms our freedom to love whoever we are catapulted to love. Because I don't believe truly falling in love has anything to do about choice. Further more H&M is funny - hysterical, what about that mother!? There is as mentioned the great music, before "Cat" lost his mind. Please no replies to defend his extremest Muslim beliefs. I am a woman and queer so it will all fall on deaf ears. Next I tried to tackle the 2 song per album exercise - - I got this far: STATS - Night In the City & Cactus Tree LOTC - Conversation & The Arrangement I still believe some of her earliest work contains the jazz root or maybe folk or her minstrel edge is just a natural stepping stone to jazz. Blue - All I Want & Last Time I Saw Richard (perhaps choosing the first and last songs on the album is my way of saying the entire album - which is my fave). FTR - Cold Blue Steel & Barangrill(tougher than Blue, Barangrill my surprise choice for today for the jazzy professor). C&S - Peoples Parties & Trouble Child(no need to worry about the jazz influence anymore, it is everywhere here). That's about as far as I got when after observing all of the wonderful choices you all made I realized with rare exception I couldn't disagree with any choices made. Many of the choices you all made were the same as mine or may be by tomorrow. As to the feelings being shared here about gay bashing and acceptance and Pride in Chicago I have just a it to add. First of all a little over 10 years ago as I left a bar a drunken man who had demanded his way in and proceeded to pursue woman in the bar who were intoxicated, followed them out into the street. Where I as a younger woman tried to create friendly interference between him and a woman who was out of her mind drunk. He who wanted a gay woman, proceeded to call me dirty gay names and and move me out of his way. Well I delayed him enough till she was out of sight and then I enjoyed the knuckle sandwich he served me up - or sucker punch! I am no dainty little lady, but I went down seeing stars - literally. I won't go into the details about the police here & now. But that man is still out there and millions like him, including women. Through education we are making strides, but I would never say that MOST people are tolerant of my lifestyle. I would say in the past 20 years we have come a long way, but I don't think Matthew Sheppards mother would see it that way. Furthermore I bet my own bigoted mother would not. Finally, on a lighter note, Kerry never write again that you were in Chicago at the Pride Parade without getting in touch with me. For that matter any of you out there! I was sitting, observing people quietly from my seat in the Closet (a bar), while you may have been right outside the door or perhaps ordering a drink right next to me. Geez I hope I was behaving! Sorry this was so long and I promise not to save so much up again for one post. Peace Susan Guzzi Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! LOL - this reminds me of the weird CDs I've spotted at the local Hy & Zel's (it's a discount drug store chain). They have tribute albums in Cd format for $3.99 or $4.99 (that's Canadian loonies, quelle bargoon!) for Madonna, Bryan Adams, the Backstreet Boys and so on. The name of the singer or band they're "tributing" is always written in REALLY BIG TYPE maybe to lure in people thinking they're getting the real thing for such a low price. They're all done by the something-or-other orchestra, so I presume they're instrumental versions only and I suspect it's of the elevator music variety. I really think I'm going to pick one up just to hear how chintzy it probably sounds - I'll have to pick the most way-out star(s) I can think of. Like, maybe they have a tribute to Alice Cooper. Hell, maybe they even have a Joni tribute (Joanie who? you mean the paved paradise chick?) The cheese factor alone is probably worth the low low price of admission. This store also sells really cheap CDs of other known singers that I'm convinced are bootlegs (the CDs, not the singers0. I saw one of Al Jarreau but it wasn't an album name I recognized. It had Al's picture on the front but I didn't really look at it closely to see if it was really him, or just another knock-off with Al or a picture of someone who kind of looks like him on it. I'll have to see if it's still there. They also sell videos I've never heard of "starring" big names. I suspect these are pictures they were in before they hit the big time and that these "stars" probably had minor roles. No these weren't those (that's a crazy sentence), these were different than the sound effects album. These were Top 40 tunes covered by unknowns who kind of sounded like the original stars, all packaged in one neat little album. The music was great (even though I never was a big Cat Stevens fan) and Bud Cort's fake suicides were hilarious. But no one has yet mentioned one of the main reasons, for me anyway, that this movie was so wonderful. Harold & Maude would never have been half as good without the delightful Ruth Gordon as the irrepressible Maude. Gordon's impish irreverence and obvious love of life sparks this movie and makes it work. She makes me see why Harold would be attracted to Maude and that makes the whole premise of the movie believable. She was one of a kind! You are right, Mark, it is more laid back then Car Wheels. I was pulled right into it like the opening track of carwheels did to me. I really like it though. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Jul 2001 16:06:32 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: A burning question!! now NJC << These were Top 40 tunes covered by unknowns who kind of sounded like the original stars, all packaged in one neat little album. >> I recall that one of the bands that participated in this sort of thing was actually called "The Original Artists", and the TV would advertise it as such, to try and fool the unwitting consumer. But they were always just off enough to tell that something wasn't kosher... My reactions are so much the same as Mark's. I was fascinated by Cort and by turns scared, horrified and and giggling uncontrollably at his suicide schemes, but Ruth Gordon was a complete revelation and just blew me away. She immediately became the the ageless spirit of a very young woman and made the love story totally believable. She really was a treasure. It is one of those rare performances one will never forget. I really loved the Cat Stevens music - some of those songs I haven't listened to in 30 yearsand it really took me back. Afterward, like Vince and Les, I did some internet searches on Cort's movies and am ready to hit the video store for more! I also learned he lives nearby and is involved in local community theater productions. I will definitely be checking for future performances. Mark - please give my best to everyone at your get-together tonight! I wish I could be there. ANother one of my closest friends just moved to Seattle so I may have to apply for an "associate" membership with the PNW jmdler chapter at this point! ;-) Kakki Mark wrote: > The music was great (even though I never was a big Cat Stevens fan) and Bud > Cort's fake suicides were hilarious. We had friends who were Muslim and they had a rock band in Pakistan. On the other hand, I guess they weren't very observant Muslims, because they drank and so on. Even if Cat "got religion", couldn't he have kept singing? I remember reading - pretty recently - that he stopped singing because it was considered "frivolous" or something like that. Maybe it's only the really fundamentalist Muslims. > I would say in the past 20 > > years we have come a long way, but I don't think > > Matthew Sheppards mother would see it that way. > > Furthermore I bet my own bigoted mother would not. > > I wish i didn't agree with you but i don't like > choking on sand. As a mother, I can't imagine turning against my kids for being gay. I can't imagine turning against them for any reason, unless they committed a vicious crime of some kind. By the way, Colin, happy anniversary and many more - and next time there's a sports thing going on, follow your first impulse and go out for a night with the girls!
