Beyond reason. Seeing people being kicked and having rocks thrown at them - people with blood all over them - was extremely upsetting to me. The thugs/hooligans were pro-Milosevic demonstrators whose march in Belgrade unfortunately intersected with the small gay-pride march. According to the reporter, the people cheering at the sidelines were sitting in surrounding outdoor cafes. I find this incident totally and utterly barbaric. I have been under the mistaken illusion that Europe was somehow more civilized and tolerant than most of the rest of the world. I still wish there was something constructive/proactive that I could do. I'd really like to get real copies of these books as opposed to photocopies. I think it would be nice to have all of Joni's published songbooks. Over the last year I've managed to get copies of Hejira, CMIARS, C&S, TI, HOSL, Mingus, Anthology, and WTRF via ebay, and I only need Blue and NRH to complete my collection. It would be really great if you (or anyone) could find me a new or used copy of NRH somewhere. I can send a US$ check to cover the costs of the book and postage. And if anybody spots a copy of Blue somewhere - the same thing goes - I'll send some $ to cover costs/postage. > I wish you could come to Ashara's on Labor Day! > We will miss you, Marian! Indeed! I love that song. I played it for my choir once and got them to do the background harmonies in between the verses. Argh, I meant in "stock" - see what happens when the boyfriend takes me out for a chocolate martini ;-) I always liked Ray's Dad's Cadillac - there's a whole lot more to that song than it appears. You brought a new dimension to it when you played it here for us. It truly is built for group harmonics and I think it could be appreciated more if heard by a chorus of voices. I just know that all of the non-straight people I have ever known have been kind, sensitive, and gentle people and I could never imagine anyone wanting to hurt them. When I saw this tragedy in Belgrade, I felt shocked and angry. If I had been there, I don't think I could have stopped myself from trying to interfere with the attackers. This incident seems especially dreadful to me because so many people were involved - not only the hooligans, but also the onlookers who cheered them on. It was a terrible crime against humanity. I have had at least one discussion with my daughters about tolerance of sexual orientation because they brought up how one of their friends had teased another girlfriend about "loving girls". My daughters are only 7 and 9 years old and already they are being exposed to bigotry (!) which must be coming from the parents or older siblings of the child who was doing the teasing. My daughters go to an international school so they are learning tolerance of other religions and cultures as part of their education. The children they go to school with are from many different countires and cultures. Although this type of tolerance is encouraged, tolerance of anything to do with sexuality is a subject which is totally ignored. Most religions are highly intolerant of anything outside of what is perceived as "the norm". I am hopeful that I can raise my daughters to be tolerant. I will try. I can see how it will not be easy, though. > Marian, I hope nobody got killed. I get very upset when my kids (14 and 10) use the expression "gay" to mean anything that they don't like, or that isn't cool. Such-and-such a TV show is "gay", or one calls the other one "gay" when they're mad. I used to ask them if they know what it means but now I know that they do know what it means. I ask them if they know so-and-so from my work - he's a really nice guy, isn't he? and guess what? he's gay. But they don't seem to get it. My daughter thinks the idea of two women or two men being in love with each other is gross. On the other hand, she still finds the whole idea of sex pretty gross (thank God!) I know my kids have a pretty good sense of justice and injustice but I worry when I hear them calling each other names like that and I tell them to stop. I don't want to give them a lecture every time they say something I don't like, but still - I don't want them growing up to be bigots either. went over to the old wwII airbase, walked around, a few photos (to be developed and then i will share)...as a baby, joni would have played directly underneath countless flights of future RCAF fighter and bomber pilots who risked their lives later in europe...her father was stationed here, as was my ex-father in law, only in moose jaw, sask...just two of the many makeshift wartime airbases dotted across the canadian prairie, where americans itching for action had snuck across the border, even with their planes...and the women who had waited out the duration of the war with their men over in europe, some for years...some never coming back...some with dear johnnie letters...so "amelia" is in the blood of joni, as intimate as can be...and thoughts of the creativity of countless war babies who spawned the sixties rock explosion and its revolution of culture, an expansiveness of consciousness suited to prairie vistas and metaphors of flying...and joni dreamed she 'saw the bombers riding shotgun in the sky'...and though she cast her lot with the peacemakers, she remembered the lives of those who suffered 'the beat of black wings'...and i shared a few flying feelings myself just having worked in airport security for the canadian corps of commissionaires, among them many veterans... a brotherhood and sisterhood of unstated solidarity you might say... i thought of joni when i arrived in sacramento and played at a downtown art gallery of poets and how such an audience gathered is such a rare thing when you could hear a pin drop between the lines of your songs...and how i wish for just such a group of listeners more often for all of you musicians out there and for joni herself... and my thanx to one of them, kate bennett, and her kind invitation to enjoy her gig with her husband and crosby loggins, who at 20, can look forward to years of fruitfulness as a singer-songwriter...kate revealing a subtle romanticism that takes courage nowadays to proclaim...and her husband with a moving john prine-like song that dug deep in the heart... i also thought of joni when i stumbled by a nitespot in tiny cambria where a roy haddersley (hope i remembered his name correctly) played with quintet...he had played with dizzy and was an old colleague of edmonton's now deceased but legendary big miller...roy had me join a few locals in playing one of my songs, but like joni i went to my hotel without a prize...but felt hey, that's okay... my prize was in santa monica when kakki called on my cell saying she was waiting for me in the parking lot....because we had such similar tastes it was uncanny...and i'm sorry, with but one night in LA, i didn't meet the rest of the jmdl'rs there...but kakki roused herself out of work exhaustion...and with herculean grace made it an evening i will never forget...a crawl to the anaconda attack that just had to be relieved, done with proper airforce discharge many years ago but memorialized in the annals of joni's star... thankyou kate and kakki, and thankyou catherine t, which though we failed to meet, primarily due to cell problems, seattle traffic and by then, rushing ahead of my creeping bills to the lower canadian dollar... among other places, i visited the sunshine coast, which refreshingly was new to me...at gibsons, a lovely couple who lived within a stone's throw from joni's place gave me directions...funny enough i stopped just nextdoor on the highway, taking a photo of a lovely cove shining through the trees...just then a kind of rubbie stumbled down the highway muttering to himself under his pungeant breath, asking why i was taking photos ...when i said i had been doing so of the entire continental coast for over 5000 miles he exclaimed 'right on....keep on clicking...' and continued with his stagger down the highway...as i pulled out of this spot i saw a heavily secured gate on the left and realised it was the same area the friendly couple had pointed out joni's piece of the shore...and this ethered buddha walking down the highway...i kind of expected howls of laughter pretty soon... ...it was near sunset...as close to the other side of joni's place i stopped at the nearest b&b, and looking out at the strait of georgia saw the most beautiful sunset i'd ever seen...two islands split apart to the north-west and the sun going down between them kissing the water...a calm glistening sea of miirored silver...and then i'd realised that with characteristic taste joni had picked such a view for her own...but my few minutes of it was also like a zen moment, overlooking the b&b decked swimming pool with two barking dogs at my feet, an open door to the house....and no one at home...my eyes stared at paradise... now back at home with a cd to get recording and gigs to play because i've got a mountain of bills piled up...a song about the ocean trying to get out of me...and a few old home blues..."what do i do now?" "can i get a recording contract somewhere?" "a few old friends are acting strange" ...and i found a homeless black cat i've given sheltar..."should i call her kakkicat or klingon? blue or miles?" We just returned from a wonderful two week Pacific NW vacation. I actually got my husband to drive north from Vancouver B.C.to Horseshoe Bay and we got on one of those big ferry boats with their bellies full of cars and tooted our way over to the Sunshine Coast. We had just been on an Inside Passage cruise in Alaska and the scenery there, near the Strait of Georgia, rivaled it squarely. This is the place where Joni's property is that she is so lovely perched on in the For the Roses' cover. Anyway, we proceeded north through Sechelt and on to Half Moon Bay and Middlepoint, running up and down that coastal highway trying to figure out which place had to be hers. We saw Lord Jim's Inn where she stayed while she was building the stone recluse (mentioned in the PWWM video- the knitting incident) I hopped out and went in and felt really dumb, but tried to act nonchalant and asked if anyone there knew her and which direction her place would be? They were VERY loyal to her privacy and tried to throw me off base and say they heard it was in Penders and other coastal areas. They did tell me that yes that is where she stayed when she was building the place in the 70's. So we went back to looking near that place and stopped in another Inn and a few folks sitting at the bar in the Jolly Roger were far less loyal and were able to tell us precisely where it was , but that there was a gate and maybe I should phone first! Phone first??? I didn't think to look to see if her number was in the white pages! So we drove back up to the apex of the highway right before Middlepoint and the new construction and below the 60KM sign and tried to find it, but it is so heavily wooded and I really did not want to invade her or her caretaker's privacy, so we just settled for where we thought it would be and tried to take some pictures of the waterfront that it looks like on the FTR album. What we realized was that just a week earlier our mega cruise ship left Vancouver and traveled through the Strait of Georgia right past her place . The stone cottage is supposed to be at sea level and could probably be seen from the water. That made me sad to think that she bought it for its wilderness beauty and there ain't much of that left now. At least she has a big enough spread that it keeps snoopers like me at bay. I just wanted to know in my heart that I was physically close to where she wrote a number of her earlier songs, esp. from FTR. It is an awesome area with some of the Mts.. still snow capped in July. When I get some of the pictures developed I will scan a few to the Yahoo group. Sorry to ramble so, but it was a high point. God bless my hubby who drove all over the place to help me with my dream and the two teenagers in the backseat wondering if I had lost it all together. As we drove back through Sechelt and waited for the return ferry, I wondered how many times she had driven there and waited on that same ground? In those same lines? Used the same restroom, okay now I am getting a little weird. I can not wait to see her in Toronto in October. It sounded an awful lot like Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes, but after a bit of research, this no longer seems likely. The recurring line from the chorus that sticks in my head was something along the lines of "This time I'm leaving for sure". Does this ring a bell for anyone? Help! I collect lots of 70's radio hits/R&B etc., and I was struck that I didn't know the song, but it had all the earmarks of that era. Any ideas? Don't be shy! - -Chris PS. Brian Wilson (NJC) My local TV listing indicated that the TNT Tribute would air at 8pm and repeat at 10pm. They were wrong on both counts! We got home at 7:20pm, saw part of the show, and it did not repeat. I promised to record it for Stephen Epstein - did anyone else record it and can they make two copies?
