The concert was to start at 8, and she was late, so the three of us started chanting very loudly, "We want some solid love," for about 5 or six minutes, thinking how cool it was to be rowdy at a Joni concert- LOL. Soon I froze, and one of them asked me what was wrong, to which I responded, "There she is!" "They asked me where, so I pointed out this blonde figure peaking out (stage right) of the curtain with an 8mm camera pointed right at us. I felt so foolish that I had to sit down! Last night's was extremely fun! She was in Madison(!)for some reason for 2 weeks. Mary P invited Kerry, Ross and I to meet her for lunch on a Friday, and since that was very short and rushed, Joni invited us to a fish fry that evening. At the restaurant, some other folks crashed our party. Ross and Kerry and I got a big round table next to Joni's reserved one. Some guy sat in my chair where I had my coat and wouldn't move, so I had to take the seat farthest from her table, which got me miffed, since she personally invited me earlier that day. Joni never showed up, so I wandered into the back banquet room where she had set up camp with her girlfriends, some fans, and a couple of gay guys. One of the guys encouraged me to stay back there with them, so did Joni herself, telling me she was glad I was such a good sleuth. I hung out with Mary P. who also found the secret sware. The goddess sat in the corner at a table for two with one of her friends. Next to her were 2 other girlfriends at a small table, and the fans were at a big round one next to that. The gay boys and Mary and I were at a long table, and they were telling me to go get a pen from one of the waiters because Joni was in a good mood and was signing autographs now. So I hunted one down, with the waiter giving me shit for 'bothering the star in the backroom' asking me for an ID to get his damn pen! By the time I got back, Joni was already sitting at another table signing the things that her fans had brought. There were about 4 girls in front of me, and I had nothing to sign, so I grabbed a paper place mat and stood in line. One of the guys and I were really laughing it up and having a gay-ol-time, and Joni kept on peering at us, like she wanted to join in. By the time I got to the table, my friend said "Have her sign your butt- it'll be worth more then!" To which everyone laughed, including Joni. So I turned my back to her and undid my belt and stopped, asking my friend, "But what if I meet a guy who doesn't like her music?" He looked at me and Joni, and said something like- it's a tough decision, kid. I redid my belt and handed her the place mat, and everyone was saying that there was a record shop 2 blocks away that ALWAYS had Joni CD's, so I should just run and get one. I asked Joni if she'd mind, and she said, "No, I'm relieved, actually!" We all laughed some more. So I ran out the front, only to see that Kerry and Ross and the rest of the table in the main room had left. Then I awoke... (Darn!) Couldn't agree more Bob, I love Mingus, and Sweet Sucker Dance in particular. It has a beautiful melody, and her phrasing is superb. Jaco really makes that album for me, although Erskine, Herbie, Wayne are also sublime. It's a very introspective, understated work, amazingly refined for a - up to that point- pop singer. An interesting perspective is to come back to Mingus, after listening a lot to those tunes on Shadows and Light. The studio version of Dry Cleaner is like hip-hop swing compared to the cool shuffle groove of the live rendition. I would include Sweet Sucker in her top 5. Dave F. Spent a glorious three days with my Brei this weekend, so I'm just trying to get caught up with my mail. I feel compelled to write and say thank you for raising this issue and for bringing it to the foreground. I know it is something that more often than not, remains unspoken. I've taken a long time to respond because I have had a great deal of difficulty coming up with the appropriate words to express how I feel. I am sad and angry to say the very least. The issue around gay bashing is near and dear to my heart. I just wanted to say thank you for having the courage and convictions to share your feelings. Brian and I talked about it and also find it very disturbing and difficult. Beyond words. Beyond reason. I know that I take for granted things we are able to do like holding hands and showing each other affection in public ... we 'can' because no one thinks twice about it... we are afterall perceived as 'straight' and yet, if a lesbian or gay couple does the same thing..many people in the mainstream freak out. Infuriating. I just do not get it. I've been told that this reaction is based upon fear...what the hell are they so afraid of? And what is there to hate about people loving each other? I joined a Unitarian Church this spring because I am new to this community and needed to find some spiritual connection but did not want anything traditional. It is a wonderful place, a place of comfort, kindness and humanity. A place where the members embrace and celebrate everyone...and especially the gay community and they mean it. Recently, two women shared in a committment ceremony. A couple of weeks ago, a lesbian couple's baby was dedicated. I wailed at that one! It was so moving and emotional and everyone cheered and clapped and gave them well wishes and presents and support and acceptance. It was truly beautiful. It gives me hope. thanks for the opportunity to try to put to words how your posts have affected us. love, Magsnbrei np in the background... A minor matter I know, but I have to set the record straight, Bob and Hell. Kamahl (real name Kandiah Kamaleswaran) is probably best described as an Australian. According to his biography (published in 1995)he was born into a Ceylonese Tamil Hindu family in Malaysia in 1934 but came to Adelaide as a schoolboy in the early 1950s. While he has always had a very strong following in New Zealand (and has toured there often), I think he has always "called Australia home" (to pinch a phrase from Peter Allen). He took Australian citizenship in 1967 and as far as I know this is still his place of residence. His music is far too smooth and middle-of-the-road for my taste - as Hell says, hes always been a favourite with the older 'blue rinse set'. However, as a person, he has always struck me as a pretty decent bloke and deserving of the Order of Australia he was awarded in 1994. It's good to see a 'down under' musician represented in the 'covers' project and, by the way Bob, I have uncovered a few more recently and will be in touch about these shortly. I stand corrected, and apologise for my wee gaffe (sorry, John)! Actually I'm kind of glad he's not a Kiwi.....just kidding! I did always think of him as being based here though - I know he did tour here a lot, so that may be where the confusion arose. And I wasn't that old at the time! It seems too jarring to intersperse her live recordings with the studio albums, and too confusing timewise. Tough choices, and really difficult being limited to only two songs from some of the cds and leaving off some favorites in an attempt to please the Prof. It would be easier to make a list of what NOT to give him. I look forward to reading your final choices, Ric. Every list so far makes me go, oh yeah, of course, he HAS to hear that one, so... good luck to you. Debra Shea NP: Joni singing Stay in Touch. I like this cd more each time I listen and this is an especially tender and beautiful song. Although Blue appears occasionally and in ebay and I hope one day to be able to purchase it there, I have never seen an auction for Night Ride Home and I've never found it thru any of the online book distributors - not even at Alibris or Bibliofind. So I'm wondering if anyone in Joniland might have an extra copy they would be willing to sell me. I wasn't here when she was in NYC recently, and am now paying very close attention to her whereabouts so I don't miss her again. Hearing her new songs, plus the Neville Brothers... very exciting!!! Send us a report, please, if you get a chance. atb, Debra Shea Diane Evans wrote: > Haven't heard this one yet, but am looking forward to seeing her in a couple > weeks in Indy at the JazzFest. Blue comes up on Ebay regularly as does NRH. Also NRH is usually in stock at some of the better music stores around L.A. I have both and can get you copies if you need them. I wish you could come to Ashara's on Labor Day! We will miss you, Marian!
