I vividly recall JM saying (in an interview) that WTRF was her "Wedding Album." She said something about how many years it took her to find her mate and her joy found its way into this work. I believe it was an old Musician magazine article, but am not sure. Anyone else remember? 'early Joni' was on the first floor with the folk stuff. DED and WTRF were in Rock-Pop, and Mingus was in Jazz, both in the basement. Another peculiarity of most Spanish and Catalan record shops is that they classify names by surnames. When I shopped in Wales I had the Mitchell, Metheny and Morrison LPs all together. Now I have Joni, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jon Bon Jovi all together... Add this to the fact that the writng on the spines of novels, and other books, sometimes reads from top down (twist your right ear to your right shoulder to read) and sometimes from the shelf up (left ear to left shoulder). If this sounds like fun, try browsing for a couple of hours... Love from Barcelona, any other Catalans (or Welsh?) listers out there? contact me off-list if you want, Mike Pritchard ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Jun 2001 14:19:53 EDT From: FMYFL@aol.com Subject: Re: joni through the years -(NJC) response Mike wrote: << Another peculiarity of most Spanish and Catalan record shops is that they classify names by surnames. While it's possible that Joni borrowed the language of 'lost and lonely' ones from references to Manson and his followers, I can't imagine she is referring to the psycho-killer as the "lord on death row." It's more likely it was just another way of restating the popular 60's-70's question "Is God dead?" Also, I can't help but think that some of the same people who used to complain about JM singing in her upper range so much are now the same ones complaining/criticizing that she has lost it. Can we give her a break? Bryan Bryan ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Jun 2001 23:51:04 -0400 From: dsk Subject: Woodstock I'm listening to Shadows and Light, which I haven't heard in a long time. What a great recording! The version here of Woodstock is really striking. It sounds like it's just Joni on guitar and the band has taken a break. I love that guitar twang and the pause when she sings about stardust and being golden. It seems so strange, though, to have this song included in such a jazzy concert. And then I thought of other concert tours and am wondering if she always includes Woodstock. Well, no, not on the BSN tour, but she did sing it on the MOA tour and the tour with Dylan and also at the Woodstock concert in 1998. How about on the WTRF tour? I'm wondering if she sees Woodstock as her signature song, maybe one she prefers to BYT.
