I think it's easier to accept from an athlete, because they deal in absolutes, and finite goals, rather than opinion. If Cathy Freeman runs the fastest 400m of any woman in the world (or at least at the Olympics) then she is, by definition, the fastest woman in the world over 400m. The same cannot be said about artists. Some people might say that the Cubism period produced the greatest paintings in the world. Personally I don't like them too much, and prefer more traditional styles. That's not to say Cubism doesn't have merit, it just doesn't appeal to me. Likewise with the performing arts. It's all subjective. One person's Hejira is another person's Mingus - or vice versa! That's not to say either is better than the other, they just appeal to different people for different reasons. But how can you argue with Cathy Freeman if she says she's currently the best female Olympic 400m runner? It's not arrogant, it's a finite truth. Joni sounds arrogant when she says she's the best (and personally I think she is!), because any form of art is open to so much interpretation, its meanings become infinite. I would prefer to call her arrogance "confidence". Arrogance, to me, is THINKING you're the best. Confidence is KNOWING that you are. I've really enjoyed many excellent discussions and analyses of Joni's work - so thanks to those who wrote them! Anyway, the request is regarding one digest that I have deleted and that contained a message, probably sent about a week ago, that I really meant to keep. I copied it and thought I had pasted it somewhere else, but it looks lost, so could the unknown sender please re-send this to me? It was a list of Joni's albums, followed by a word, which the writer thought would be the opinion people would have of a certain album of Joni's (WTRF or DJRD, I think) if they liked that album on the list. Well, you'll know what I mean if you wrote or saw the message! Thanks in advance for helping me out! Lieve PS I've always liked Joni's songs when I happened to hear them on the radio, I even had an odd (Dutch) collection album of some of her earlier songs, but it's only recently that I finally got to listening to some of her later, jazzy albums and wow! - I just don't know how I could have lived without them for so long! Especially Hejira, Blue, Hissing, etc... are magnificent, and I also think TI is really strong. Anyway, I thought I'd just share with you that my partner believes that, way back in the late 70s, when he was somewhere in Greece in a youth hostel, he met this N American lady who was obviously a bit special as she had some male "minders" with her. They talked and when he went to sleep in the dorm, he woke up finding this woman gently kissing him on the cheek and then disappearing. He's convinced it was Joni! ********************************************************************** EBRD SECURITY NOTICE This email has been Virus Scanned ********************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2001 12:46:58 -0400 From: "blonde in the bleachers" Subject: Re: Cooler than Nixon, Jagger, and Pyle The CD I own has those words on it [IMAGE] >From: Harry83house@aol.com >Reply-To: Harry83house@aol.com >To: joni@smoe.org >Subject: Cooler than Nixon, Jagger, and Pyle >Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2001 09:30:36 EDT > > I was wondering if anyone knows if the audience member "shout-out" about >Joni being cooler than Nixon, Mick Jagger, and Gomer Pyle has been >re-inserted onto the remastered CD of "Miles of Aisles"... its on the LP, but >not the first issue of MOA CD. NJC In a message dated 06/27/2001 12:40:56 AM Pacific Daylight Time, les@jmdl.com writes: Re: Rap uh ... stinks. NJC I agree wholeheartedly with Blair. There is a lot I don't like about some rap artists and the message that is being heard by impressionable ears. But what I like to do is listen to some of the intricate rhythms that are being put out. Rhythm is as much a part of music as melody and harmony. A good example is Missy Elliot (who is from my hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia). In her latest song, she purposely uses an eastern influence and if I have my instruments correct, the main instrument used is a Sitar(sp?). I find this very interesting. I also find "Avant Garde" music and jazz interesting as well. No one will like every genre of music, but it is nice to try to keep as open a mind as possible to all of the styles of music that are out there and respect the fact that someone might like a style of music that you do not. My friend, Elisa, and I laugh about the fact that she thinks Yanni is the greatest thing since sliced bread and I would rather be tortured than listen to his music. It is very mundane and uncreative in my eyes, but for her, it is relaxing and uplifting. We are not going to change each other's minds, so we laugh about it. Viva la difference! I just expect music and musicians to be as creative as they can no matter what the genre, and I appreciate it when I hear that creativity. Being a musician makes me a little more picky. Even though James Hetfield(sp?) scares me a little sometimes, I am a big fan of Metallica, Alicia Keys, Jill Scott, Matchbox 20, Dave Koz, Wasim Diop, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, etc..,and of course, all things Joni. If anyone gets the "Ovation" channel and is able to catch George Martin's three part series on "Melody, Rhythm, and Harmony," it would be well worth your time. George Martin is one of the most awesome producers in the business today, and if I am correct, produced the Beatles during their early years. Hearing what he has to say on the three elements of music will deepen your appreciate for music in general and will definitely make you love Joni all the more. I love that album, and was disappointed that they edited the CD. Any answers? I'm referring to the "original artwork included" re-issues on disk. Thanks! FWIW, I was thinking of Eddie Albert (Oliver Douglas on the show), whose son Edward Albert Jr. was in a movie (based on a play) called "Butterflies Are Free", and his female co-star....Goldie Hawn, who as you know does a great job of "Carey" and who is also still way too good looking for my own good! > > So - lots of ways to get there, but it always comes back to Joni! > Geez, you write & write your thoughts about Joni's words & music. Maybe one or two people respond if you're lucky. Then you mention 'Green Acres' in a post an lo and behold, a thread is born! LOL! It's a bit more convoluted but here's what I came up with: Eddie Arnold starred with Eva Gabor in Green Acres Eddie Arnold made a movie with Gregory Peck & Audrey Hepburn called 'Roman Holiday' Audrey Hepburn was in a movie called 'Breakfast at Tiffanies' in which she sang a lovely Johnny Mercer song called 'Moon River' 'Moon River' was the theme song for Andy Williams' variety show in the 60s. Andy Williams was married to Claudine Lingerie oops, I mean Longet who recorded one of the versions of 'Both Sides Now' in Bob's special 'Cheeses of the World' section of the Cover's Project! (and Andy recorded it himself, too!) They were telling a kind of story about modern romance... First you're smitten and then it declines into this dark thing... OK, you're a doormat now and then she laughs. I have this recorded somewhere, someday I'll have to go back and watch that video.
