I'm too busy listening to Joni at the moment to write about it... Something, or rather someone, has triggered a touch of creativity in me, and after getting reactions from some of my trusted advisors (you know who you are, dear people) I've to jump in with both feet and post the restults of my frantic scribblings. The first item is a short poem, that happened in about ten minutes last night. It probably shows: I've never considered myself a poet. It's inspired by... oh well never mind that... And yes, the title is kinda lame. Sue me :) The second is a song, that took two nights to come to fruition. One of my friends is responsible for the major cliche in the song, and while I usually try to avoid cliches, I rekon it fits. This one has the bonus feature that you can choose the half of the title that works for you. If you like 'em, let me know. If you hate them totally, I probably don't want to know :-) Peace, - --Chris (Cambridge UK) "Love" Electricity sparks between two poles A brief event strikes two lost souls Asunder torn an aching woe Forever welded, two hearts mended Heat and warmth, our hearts desire Earning not each others ire Loving feelings forever fired Made as one and bound eternal Light shines out for all to see Lending glimpses of what might be Fearful, though, of what might not be Those who try, destined to cry All are smitten, but some are bitten So often is it written For all our sakes, let us all be driven For ever after, our hearts to master "Spin me round and drag me under" February rings a new change Nine months long since summers last dawn Three months short to wait for its warm touch But right now for me summers early Someone brought new life on early Winter all around made warm and dry They say absence makes the heart grow fonder One year later words flow fast still Virtual perpetual motion Linking us across a great divide Then it becomes hops and hot air Better that then bits and bytes yeah Winter all around made warm and dry They say absence makes the heart grow fonder But I never did stop long to ponder This elevating sense of wonder (Chorus) I think about you all the time I hope thats not so great a crime With luck I might just be alright If perhaps youll hold me tight But hell its all just temporary I read the signs but failed the theory Out of control, my foot flat on the floor And as I plunge headlong into fate I wonder if its now just too late Winters icy grip undoing mine They say absence makes the heart grow fonder But I never did stop long to ponder That this elevating sense of wonder Might spin me round and drag me under (Chorus) I think about you all the time I hope thats not so great a crime With luck I might just be alright If perhaps youll hold me tight If I keep it to myself then I might Think about you all my life ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 23:10:05 +0100 From: colin Subject: Re: the pissing on summer lawns SJC mags wrote: > Forgive me for sounding crass however there is no > other way to say this... > > "To be pissed" is a common term in Canuckian for being > drunk . it is the same here. we don't use the term to mean angry but we do use it to describe being in a down mood-'pissed off'. Well, it was probably the smallest Joni event ever, but we had a great time! (Ashara: We are not worthy! We are not worthy!) A few people couldn't make it at the last minute due to unavoidable circumstances, so we started out at dinner with just Diane E. from IN, Steve, and my partner and I. (Oh yeah, Joni was there too in the form of a great mask Diane had made from the cover of Turbulent Indigo.) Mary from Madison joined us later (she can tell that story), and we met at a local bar called the 1100 Club. (We were joined later by 2 of Steve's friends, making our numbers increase a little!!!) Steve did an awesome set of Joni tunes for our small but mighty group, and even included some dulcimer songs. We're not sure how much he appreciated our out of tune back-up singing on "Hissing" and "Carey," but he took it in stride. :>) After we pretended to be Steve's roadies and hauled his equipment to his house, the girls (Mary & Diane) came to our house for a "Joni slumber party." The next morning, we had a "Joni brunch," complete with great food and conversation. Thanks, Steve for all the trouble you went through and the private concert! Mary, it was great seeing you again after almost a year and Diane, it was wonderful to meet you! You're both invited to "come for conversation" anytime!!! Well...yes and no. Sweetwater was a terrific LA band in the late '60s, with *no* guitars. Cello, flute, bass, drums, keyboard and a fabulous singer called Nansi Nevins. They were making really different rock'n'roll, and were great live. (And MS Kakki liked 'em too!) The movie is a VH-1 produced melodrama...it's not awful, but it's not great. I want to give everyone a heads-up about this CD, because it was not only something that I had nothing to do with, it's a product I consider to be seriously substandard and misleading. My manager Michael Hausman and I heard that this project was in the works several months ago. In our opinion the label putting out the record, Hip-O Records, had no right to use the material they were intending to use in the first place. But I didn't want to be the bad guy and shut the project down entirely, so I asked Michael to get in touch with whoever was heading the project and offer our services, so that the record could be one I was proud of, even if it wasn't something I wanted out in the first place. I offered to do the artwork, as I had done for every record I've ever made except the first Til Tuesday record, and be involved in song selection. This offer was flatly refused--we were basically barred from being involved in any way on a project that had my NAME on it. As typical as this is in the music business, it still never ceases to amaze me. The most unbelievable thing they did was to take quotes from old interviews and weave them into liner notes for the package so that it would APPEAR that I had been involved--basically using my own reputation for integrity in my music to sell their own lame product. And the very title--"The Ultimate Collection"--implies at the very least a comprehensive collection, when it doesn't contain anything from Bachelor No. 2 and only one song from Magnolia (and not the Oscar-nominated song), and yet it DOES contain several things I personally consider to be absolute crap, including a rough mix of one song from just one of two reels of tracks, a song recorded live off the radio 10 years ago and never authorized by me to be recorded at all, much less released, a song I recorded for a movie as a favor to a producer friend that I didn't even write, etc. None of the great little B-sides or demos that I was actually proud of and thought would be perfect for this kind of collection. So I would ask everyone to please give this one a miss-- I hate to see fans being subjected to this kind of music industry bait-and-switch. Michael Hausman and I have been planning to put out our own collection that I promise will be a lot more "ultimate" than this wretched fraud. Needless to say, there's also a lawsuit in the works. To put out a record that deliberately gives the impression that it's been authorized by me is really the last straw. Having previously confessed to my not having 'gotten' Hejira, I did not even buy DJRD until recently. I am a lucky bastard. Ann then wrote: "Bob Dylan - Am I the only songwriter who doesn't worship the ground his bobness walks on? He can't hold a candle to Joni. (IMnsHO) Anaconda - I agree with what's becoming consensus - that the "tequila anaconda" incident is just an example of how much she's willing to reveal. And, btw, DJRD is probably my least favorite Joni album. It's the only one I never just put on and play, although I really like the title song, Jericho, Otis and Marlena, and Off Night Back Street. I think it could have been edited into one album. running for cover too - move over Randy! lots of love Anne" Perhaps your are the only such songwriter. I am not a songwriter, so my vote should not count, I suppose. But writing songs involves more than just lyrics (and I prefer Joni's lyrical content, too) so I am voting with you anyway. Then SC Joni Guy replied: "not sure that you could edit it down to a single LP, Anne...where would you cut? All I would do would be to (possibly) shorten "Tenth World", but I've come to the conclusion that in its entirety it's a logical and well-timed bridge between the 'real world' of "Otis & Marlena" & "Dreamland". Maybe you can reduce "Paprika Plains" to a 3-minute single? ;~) Bob" Well, here's the Arrogance. After all of my confessions, while listening over and over to one of my new discoveries (how clever of me to finally 'get' them), I too started considering how I would edit DJRD so as to make it a single LP of palatable size and formidable density. As time passed, I read that some of what I would cut included others' favorite cuts from the album. Like, the Overture to Cotton Avenue. Well, after changing my mind a half dozen times or so, I reduced my edits to elimitaing Jericho, which I do not believe belongs on the album, except perhaps by way of contrast to Silky Veils, and I am totally underwhelmed by Tenth World, despite its playful Jungle sounds. So, to me, replace Jericho with Otis and Marlena in the batting order and delete Tenth World and we are now back to 50 minutes ( a Hejira's length). Here's the Humility. How dumb can I get ? Anyway, just ordered Mingus, DED and CMIAR via my Father's Day gift certificate to complete my collection of originals. Do not intend to quit after just a few listens - though I still have not connected with WTRF. Eventually, will order Hits and Misses, for completeness, but for now can still discover the missing links. Wonder what I will decide needs editing on them. PS - I admire LIS, but agree that that line is not her best work. Do not like the term 'baby' particularly (I am partial to honey, I guess), and do not relate via personal experience to having to 'make it socially' with my mate. But I can extrapolate to get the feeling, which certainly means that the line does not 'ruin' one of her best songs (I love the medley of LIS and LTWCM on FTR, which with CBSAWF make that side one of the powerhouse sides of her career).
