Hi, I'm new to the list. I'm not sure if it's appropriate to give an introduction, so I'll keep it fairly Joni-related. I've collected Joni's albums from vinyl to casstte and now onto CD since 1969: "Clouds" first and then (retrospectively) "Song to a Seagull" second. Ater that, in chronological order up to and including "Chalk Mark in a Rainstorm", after which I got more into classical music, then jazz which has led me full circle back to Joni again with "Both Sides Now". My all-time favourite Joni songs are "Song for Sharon" and "Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire". Unfortunately, until now, I've only ever seen Joni perform live once, when I was in my teens and she performed at the Isle of Wight Festival (an English equivalent of Woodstock). I remember her performance was marred by a noisy helicopter flying overhead, which Joni could nether see nor hear. This resulted in 100,000+ people booing, jeering and shouting "go away" at the helicopter. Sadly, Joni thought the boos were aimed at her and started to cry. My heart and that of the whole audience went out to her. I wonder if Joni ever found out the real reason why people were booing that day? I hope so. Anyway, this leads me to my question. there were two big Isle of Wight Festivals, August '69 when Bob Dylan topped the bill and August '70 when Jimi Hendrix was the star attraction, and I went to them both, so I'd just like to confirm that the one I saw Joni at was in 1970. Can anybody out there confirm that, please? Also, can anybody tell me how many times Joni has played in England? Finally (lots of questions here), was anybody else on the list at that same Isle of Wight Festival, because I'm forever trying to remember all of the performers that I saw and I've never been able to find that info anywhere on the web. I can remember The Who, ELP, Richie Havens, Tom Paxton, The Band etc, but the exact line-ups of the '69 and '70 festivals have become kind of blurred into one big hazy memory. This one very happy lady came into the cafe and said to my boss, "Lori I'm so glad to see you before I go and I am also so glad that you are listening to Joni Mitchell!" I couldn't resist, so I piped in, "You are a big Joni Fan?" and the lady answered yes. Then another lady who was buying a coffee chimed in, "OH, I love Joni Mitchell too, I was listening to Hejira all the way down to the beach." The first lady then told me how Hejira was such a great album and how she appreciated Joni's work so much. I proceeded to give her my email address and the told her about the Discussion List. Her name is Bethany and am not sure if she'll be joining soon or not, but it was surely nice to meet too extremely nice fans at one moment. It was T-riffic!! He did most of his material from his new album. My personal favorite was "THe Greek Song". He also did a cover of his father's song, "ONe man guy" with Teddy Thompson singing lead on one verse and his sister Martha singing lead on another. That song is also to my surprise and joy is on the new album as well. Rufus made a joke that Teddy's mother or his mother (i forget) thinks that Teddy should be Rufus's boyfriend. I did think Teddy was a cute guy and he was (more importantly) a consistant guitar player. This was one of the most warm shows I have seen in a while. The musicianship was excellent and their was an excellent sense of friendship between those onstage. Afterwards, my friends and I went to the back door (hoping to meet Rufus). Teddy was outside and I embarrassed myself with a question, "Do you have a boyfriend." He said no, and that he wasn't gay sort of politely and with a grin. I felt like an ass, but that is what i get for asking such a question. Rufus did come out to greet us, signed some cds, posters, etc, I chewed his ear off for a bit, about how his music supported me when I was coming out in the Summer of 98'and then he retreated back into the theatre. Overall, it was a great night, topped off with onion and spinach omlette at the South Street diner. I'll have to print out some of your "reviews" and keep them, perhaps I should send them to my mother :-) You know, if you only have a little of visual imagination it's so easy to picture images in your mind reading or listening to Joni's lyrics. I think this is really what she means when she says that she paints with words and music. Lines like "I'm going outside to get some air" or "You brush against a stranger and you both apologise" in their simplicity they open up entire paintings or movies in your mind. When working of this project, I almost felt obliged to pay a small tribute to those beautiful words that are by now like tattooed in my brain. What is also so special in Joni's lyrics is the fact that they are universal, you don't need to know the specific context in which they have been written or the meaning she had in mind. After a while they become your own (not in the copyright sense!). There have also been some comments about the site of Joni paintings that Jamie and I did some time ago. Jamie posted a few messages when it was done and there was an idea of incorporating it into the official site jm.com thinking it would be its natural home. If John is still up to it, I'd be more than happy to send the files. Thanks again for all your support. Just a thought...I don't know how well her previous records sold & if she made any money from them or how well she was paid for her opening slot with the Dixie Chicks, but I would guess that her name recognition is bigger than her bank account at this point... A year ago, these 14 songs were reported as the track listing for Patty's 3rd CD "Silver Bell", .....Little God, Boston, Perfect White Girls, Truth #2, What You Are, Silver Bell, Driving, Sooner Or Later, Top Of The World, Sorry And Sad, Making Pies, Mother Of God, One More Girl, Standing ......Maybe the songs are the same & the titles have changed? Silver Bell Top Of The World Standing We Are Water Makin' Pies Nobody's Crying Take it with Me Mother of God I Write The book Good Thing Breaking Up Somebody's Home Incidentally, the title track is a real scorcher, similar to "Flaming Red". The Cheftians said that they chased Joni for about 2 years trying to get permission to do "Magdelene Laundries". Not that she's hostile towards the Chieftans, either. Why don't interviews ask THAT question? "Ms. Mitchell, why do you drag your feet so when approached for interviews, and projects that involve collaboration?" Debra Shea said: >> .. on the Richard Thompson discussion list, his manager said that Richard would like to perform some Joni songs, but there's a problem with getting permission from Joni. He didn't specify what type of problem and it seems strange considering how many people have recorded her songs, but maybe performing them live is more complicated. >> Oh well, Lama NPIMH: I vant to be alone. If you want to, you can give to Patty at Fairtunes.com. This company is for real and they send checks to artists and their managers no matter how small they are. They even chase the artist representative for the address if they need to. Patty is in their database; just search for her name under Find Artists. http://www.fairtunes.com/ > I don't know how well her previous records sold & if she made any > money from them According to Soundscan: "Living With Ghosts" has sold 119,696. "Flaming Red" has sold 95,439. And given that A&M had her redo the first record, I'm sure she has not made any money off of the record sales. Hi Kate, The opening verse to Joni's song "Talk to Me" from her album "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" are: "There was a moon and a street lamp I didn't know I drank such a lot Till I pissed a Tequila-anaconda The full length of the parking lot! Oh I talk too loose Again I talk too open and free I pay a high price for my open talking Like you do for your silent mystery" Somewhere either in the myriad of articles I've read on jmdl.com, or perhaps I heard from a close friend of hers who has filled me in on some of her lyrics, that the parking lot cited in the song is at Dan Tana's. Dan's Tana's is two doors down from the Troubadour and next door to the former La Masia restaurant (where I accidently stepped back on Joni's foot in 1981!). It's very likely to be a place she frequented. At some point when I have more time, I'll look again to see if this was mentioned in an article. I told my story in my first post to the list back in '97 and many of the long-timers here have heard it before so sorry for the repeat. I was at the Troubadour with friends to see their friend's band play. The band was trying to be punk but really was unlistenably bad so we decided to go eat at La Masia next door. There was a big crowd and a long wait. We were standing in the front by the bar and I stepped back and hit a foot. When I turned around to say "pardon me" it was Joni!! I was so stunned that my jaw just hit the floor and I quickly turned back around without another word! There's a kind of decorum that people who grow up in LA are raised with to not chat up the local celebrities when they are out on private time because we so often see them around shopping or dining and it's not cool to impose on them. Even when I was invited to meet her after the taping I still had a hard time talking to her! Thankfully, she was so gracious that she helped put me at ease. > Kakki you & the long time LA gang are going to have to take us all on a tour > of Joni historical places for the LA Joni fest!
