Joni said in an interview "Oh, I picked the perfect material - "The Three Great Stimulants," which addressed the cause. Well, nobody's there for the cause. That's heartbreaking. And in the back room, the managers are squabbling over position. They're kicking U2 out of their rightful spot to put the Police on top with their reunion, and it's ugly. And I did a song called "Number One." And there's a line in it like "Win and lose/Win and lose/To the loser go the heartsick blues/To the victor goes the spoiling/Honey, did you win or lose?" And in the middle of it - if you see the videotape - my face kind of lights up I'm thinking, "Holy shit, if they stone me now it will be great. It will be so fitting." Now that I just finished the project (final assessment next week!) I thought the least I could do was to post once again to thank you all. Some of the discussions on the list have been very inspiring and I even included in my research material a post by Bob Muller (will you ever forgive me?) about the "Michelangelo story". The project is called "15 small self portrait" and is in the form of a web site. As the title suggests, it should tell something about myself and is made of visuals, sound, lyrics and quotes. You'll find that the Joni content in it is pretty significant; how could I talk about me without including references to our "guru"? Anyway, if you have a few minutes to spare and would like to have a look at it, click here http://www.malanga.co.uk and click again on the "15 small self portraits" button. The first comments from friends tend all towards something like "how weird!", so you've been warned!! To view the site you need to have the Flash 5 plug-in installed on your machine; most computers now have it, but if yours hasn't you can download it for free here (it would only take 1 minute) http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash I'd love to have your comments back. That's what Joni wrote heart shaped on the back of the dulcimer she gave to John Kelly. John was kind enough to let me have a go at playing the dulcimer last night. He must have been relieved when I gave the instrument back unharmed as I wasn't using the anti slip mat. We chatted for a while about Joni, jmdl and stuff. John has a broad smile and a mischievous twinkle in his eye which I'm sure helps when playing the role of Joni Mitchell. These were his first Paved Paradise shows in 2 years but he has plans to update the show to include his new vg8 and he may bring out a record of Joni songs. When I went to collect tickets for the show, a nice lady invited me into a pre show drinks party in a lovely 18th century building. I felt like Eddie in the corner until my mate Tara arrived. John/ Joni was accompanied by expert keyboards and percussion by Georgia O'Keefe, played by Zecca Esquibel. The songs were performed with a lot of heart and soul including stunningly beautiful versions of Blue and Down To You. The between song "this is a dulcimer" type talks were hilarious and appropriately for the location, Francis Bacon was substituted for Van Gough in the intro to The Circle Game. Thanks John and Georgia, it was a real treat. I hope to get to your Joyce show in September. Tomorrow I'll be in Finsbury Park watching Neil Young and Crazy Horse. It's going to be a great weekend. I have never related this song to a child/parent thing. I always thought it was about kids going to school in the morning. They feel hopeful and fresh, it's a new day, anything could happen, they're getting refreshments (tea and lemonade) after all. ha ha. "I'd like to buy you everything..." - this line always made me think she was singing about a lover, she wants to give them everything, but all she has is herself for all the mornings still to live. Which may seem to veer off what i thought was the subject, but wouldn't that be just like her? The whole songs smacks of hope for a new day and the future to me. It has always made me feel this way to listen to it. You have a very elegant sense of design. I love all that open space, and enjoyed seeing such a wide variety of images. It makes perfect sense to me that a self portrait would consist of so many glimpses of objects and ideas important to you; seems more real than a static snapshot, although it's still an incomplete portrait (can there ever be a "complete" one?). I liked how your "standard" photo was built up during the looking around (I skipped here and there I must admit, but eventually saw it all), so while looking at all the bits, the usual type of self-portrait was created. Very interesting. The clouds of Michelangelo page was quite moving; I kept thinking of the word elegaic and felt such mourning for all the people in those photos, such distance and such loss. The second time I looked at the page I heard not only the music but quietly spoken words from another page too, which was a big surprise and added a lot to the mysteriousness of it all. The "three great stimulants" bench was fun, moving the mouse and coming up with not only actual words but all sorts of nonsense words too. (The speaker has a wonderful voice; very soothing.) I most enjoyed the interactiveness of the site, which is one of the beauties of artwork on the internet. Another favorite part was "ask me" with the colorful tiles and sad I don't knows, which became such a rumble when moving the mouse across the tiles, it sounded like a brainstorm. I can relate to that. Your project is also quite apropos of the current "strangers" discussion. Even after looking at all the symbols portraying you, I still know only bits and pieces, and you remain not completely unknown, but a stranger still. There's some sadness in realizing how separate we all are, with only occasional flashes of closeness. No wonder the search for love is relentless; in that there's always the hope that the separateness can be overcome. Definitely something Joni fans can understand. I can hear her singing now "There is the hope and the hopelessness I've witnessed all these years." Yep to that one. While I was at your site I also looked at your portfolio and was very happy to see Joni's paintings from the London exhibit in the 80s. I love all those colliding images she did. It's the first time I've seen so much of her work from those years and it's much more creative and impressive (to me) than the copying she's been into recently. It was a pleasure looking through all those paintings and the site design made it very easy. Good pictures by Jamie too! (Hi Jamie!) Be sure to post your next project, ok? I'm curious already... atb, Debra Shea Raffaele Malanga wrote: > Anyway, if you have a few minutes to spare and would like to have a look > at it, click here > > http://www.malanga.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Jun 2001 14:46:59 -0400 From: "janine sherman" Subject: Re: Harbourfront Sounds great to me. When I saw him in April he did "Crawl Back" and ended up snarling like some horrid monster in pain, and right after that he sang "King of Bohemia", a lullaby to his daughter, and I was thoroughly captured by both, and so impressed that he could be completely genuine in such different types of songs. Plus his guitar playing blows me away. The first time I saw him I couldn't believe that one person was making all those sounds, so gracefully and seemingly so easily, and singing too, and being charming on top of that. What a guy! Most of that energy is lost in his studio recordings, which is really too bad. If you're not opposed to using Napster/Napigator (what's left of it) or perhaps AudioGalaxy, try running a search for the following Patty Griffin titles. Silver Bell Top Of The World Standing We Are Water Makin' Pies Nobody's Crying Take it with Me Mother of God I Write The book Good Thing Breaking Up Somebody's Home Incidentally, the title track is a real scorcher, similar to "Flaming Red". Obviously, there's no way of knowing for sure which of these were truly to be used on the new CD, but I'd bet at least half of 'em were heading that way. Enjoy, Chris. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Jun 2001 13:03:27 -0700 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: JMDL photos - Marian, Shane, Casa Alegre & more NJC Thanks Bob! I've always been grateful to Raffaele and Jamie for sharing those with us - don't know how most of us would have ever seen them otherwise. This is my favorite Joni period and I wish she would show these around the U.S. This also got me wondering what she may be up to with the painting lately. It will be interesting to see the next phase. Sounds like people have known about this site for a while. Somehow I missed seeing those paintings until today. I'm glad I finally stumbled upon them. > This is my > favorite Joni period and I wish she would show these around the U.S. This > also got me wondering what she may be up to with the painting lately. I, too, look forward to seeing what she comes up with next. Walker" Subject: Re: the bad news re: Patty Griffin NJC I can say that I didn't see any "anti-competitive" shelving of records at the four major labels that I worked at over my decade in the biz. In fact, I think that it is a very common misconception that the practice occurs often, if at all. There are also some managers and lawyers who tell artists that this happened to cover their own butts. Usually when a project gets shelved, it's because someone has looked at the label's total marketing budget and has decided that there will have to be some records that they won't release. When they make that decision, they're assuming that the marketing spend would outweigh the financial benefit of releasing the record. On rare occasions I've seen cases where the project was shelved because of ego clashes between an artist and a high-level executive. It happened with Sophie B. Hawkins and Columbia because she refused to take banjo out of a single. And it happened with Anita Baker and then new Elektra president Sylvia Rhone because Anita wouldn't let Sylvia remix a song for radio. Because in Patty's case the label is Interscope I am not at all surprised by this move. Since they swallowed up Geffen and A&M, they have been doing this alot (e.g., Aimee Mann whose situation turned out great and Courtney Love from Hole who is in the court battle of her career). Because the person who originally had the vision for the artist no longer works there, there isn't anyone sitting in the meeting to defend the record when the label is making those "marketing spend" type cuts or when there's a need to trim the roster to make way for new signings. Also because Interscope is a totally hits, "wanna be cutting edge" kind of place, I could see that they don't think Patty fits their image - they're home to Dr. Dre, Eminem, Limp Biskit and Beck. Unfortunately, Patty does not have major catalog like Blues Traveler, Sting or Bryan Adams to leverage for better treatment. It's common practice for major labels to hold the master of the unreleased record. They want money for it - at least what was spent to make it and whatever the artist may have outstanding in terms of an unrecouped balance. The true measure of whether or not Interscope is being malicious will be if they refuse an offer from another label to buy Patty out and buy the master. So if Madonna or anyone else wanted Patty they would have to write Interscope a check. How big that check is (beyond costs) directly reflects the animosity between the label and the artist. What fabulous times we had down in La-la land for the BSN tour! I'm looking forward to this rumoured L.A. Fest like nobody's business. My mantra ought to be "one fest at a time, Julius, one fest at a time..." ;-) I just received some lovely photos from the NY Jonifest from sweet Sue Cameron. One of my favorites is one of Alison, Nikki, Sue, Brian G., Rose and myself on the Upper West Side after we'd attended an Arts Festival and walked through Central Park. What a happy crew we were...what a nice day we had. I feel so blessed to be a part of this wonderful community. When I look at these photos and reflect on all the great times and splendid friends I've met it's almost overwhelming. Thank you all. - -Julius ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Jun 2001 21:34:37 -0500 From: "Diane Evans" Subject: NJC Midwest gathering Okay, you guys!
