I got side-tracked when Sherelle first made her offer of a demo tape, and forgot to respond, but is it still available? Like Michael, I first listened to Jonatha on advice from this group, and I'm very glad I listened! On second thoughts...... Hell - not being particularly fresh because she's tired and bored, at home alone on a Friday night - even the cat is out partying. Sad but true. ____________________________ "To have great poets, there must be great audiences too." - Walt Whitman hell@ihug.co.nz Hell's Personal Photo Page: http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~hell/main/personal.htm Visit the NBLs (Natural Born Losers) at: http://www.nbls.co.nz ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 08 Jun 2001 07:55:27 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: NJC Party Cats (njc) <> Which reminds me of the GREAT song by Stan Ridgway (ex-Wall of Voodoo) called "Walking Home Alone", which features the line "even the cat she left me with is going out with someone else". But the best phrase in the song in my mind is: "Ain't it funny how one afternoon, can make two people stop and say that all that time they spent together Didn't really mean that much anyway"... It's very Waits-like in it's descriptiveness and very Hejira-like in the fact that one great line just leads to another! I guess I missed "this whole VG-8 thing" when I was on hiatus from the list. I agree that the VG-8 kept Joni out of retirement and I love Taming the Tiger, but that doesn't change my opinion that Turbulent Indigo is my favorite album, especially for her masterwork on the acoustic guitar. It's like comparing apples and oranges, in my opinion. I would love to try a VG-8, although I'm a little worried that afterward I'd be cashing in Kate's financial aid checks to buy one! :-) I'm 40% sure I'm going to Topsfield this year. It depends on if I show up! I certainly want to be there!! :-) take care, sue >Don't tell me we are gonna start this whole VG-8 thing again. (Covers 18 Lottery) A couple of folks have reminded me that I have yet to announce the giveaway for Covers 18, so forgive the slip... Anyway, YOU TOO can win a totally free copy of the "Jimmy-approved" Covers volume 18! Just name that tune (in no notes). Pick a Joni song, and the corresponding album, and whoever is closest wins. It's that simple! For example: "Blue Boy - Ladies of the Canyon" Please remember to send your response to JUST me. You wouldn't want to give any ideas to a JMDL opponent! Join the list of lucky JMDL'ers, and maybe you can join the list of quotes below*: "Covers Volume 17 changed my life!" - Yael Harlap "I got one and it makes a great beer coaster!" - Bob Murphy "You sent me a CD?" - Mags Let the games begin! Bob NP: The Pretenders, "Brass in Pocket (unplugged)" *I made up all these quotes ;~) Forgive my goofball mood, but the weekend is upon us! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Jun 2001 09:56:12 EDT From: SMEBD@aol.com Subject: Re: Dorothy Parker (njc) In a message dated 6/8/01 6:17:07 AM Eastern Daylight Time, hell@ihug.co.nz writes: > Hell, From reading your posts, I'd say you are "fresh" :-) and please stay that way!! I *also* never got EIG as a song by song answer to "Exile on Main Street"...(cue Jason for some illumination on this question)...on the whole, EIG IS a great record, if only to hear "I'll fuck you til your dick is blue"...now THERE'S a unique lyric! :~D As for Liz being the best s-s of the 90's, that's a different issue. I think she has lots of potential. Jeff Buckley was better, but then again he didn't make it OUT OF the 90's. :~( I guess in retrospect the 90's was not a landmark decade for singer-songwriters, although I feel like I'll have to eat crow for that statement...seems like most of the best 90's writers were in bands.
