Some friends and I have a monthly Thurday night dinner ritual at restaurants in San Francisco, a different one each time. Thursday last we dined at a Middle-Eastern establishment, which was tres chic, what with the intimacy of 15 friends sitting cross-legged on cushions at a long low table amid copious candlelight, passing around our shared exotic appetizers and entrees. Oh, and there were goddess-like belly dancers, adorned in full "I Dream of Genie" splendor, with their perfectly proportioned hour-glass bods, meticulously bejeweled ears and sensuously painted faces. One of them had dark, waist-length hair that shimmered like fine black silk when she danced. She had mesmerizing, kaleidoscopic violet-colored eyes, like Elizabeth Taylor's in "Cleopatra." She fixed me in her stare during their table-side performance and I wondered if she was in some sort of trance. As she made her way across the room away from our table I snapped out of a daze, and it dawned on me that the trance had been all mine. If the hypnotic eyes hadn't gotten me, the beauteous dance proficiency and the femininity of her abdominal gyrations, coupled with the visceral quality of the percussive rhythyms she summoned from diminutive cymbals worn between her thumb and fingers, would've. While watching their performance, I had an epiphany about Herman Hesse's meaning when he described the courtesan Kamala's mouth in _Siddhartha_ as being "like the inside of a freshly cut fig." But I digress like a schizophrenic... What I'm getting at (really, I am), is that there was one of those multi-tentacled houka pipe contraptions on the table. You know, like the one Grace Slick sings about in Jefferson Starship's "Go Ask Alice"? Strange how it was piqueing my curiosity. I was all: "I have to take a drag off that thing." But I was perplexed because, everybody knows, there's no smoking in any California building...no legal smoking anyway, certainly not any kind of tobacco and definitely not in restaurants. No way. The penalty for doing so, befitting the crime, is immediate and total social osterization - then death by hanging, electric chair, guillotine, or firing squad (perp's choice). Nevertheless, I saw a trendy looking couple at another table huffing away at one of those bad boys like wild-fire, and they looked cool doing it! We made eye contact as I walked by, and I think they must've sensed my curiosity about the bong-like device. Exhaling slowly, the young woman offered me an arm of the octopus. As I grasped it, she put gentle pressure on my hand, as if to say "just squeeze here." Rows and flows of "smoke" streamed into my mouth. The thing was powered by some sort of internal generator. I inhaled gingerly, then wretched. It tasted, well...awful. It wasn't smoke per se, but a kind of dried fruit powder that is vaporized in the houka by some weird science. Turns out that there are several varieties of the fruit/spice blends that they pack the bowl with, but I think I had done some "apricot." Blech! It must've been the pits! I resolved right then to rethink my "when in Rome, do as the Romans do" approach to such things. - -Julius aside from that, i'm still wondering about the big titted woman paz spoke of who was tearing up nyc. made me think of a song...last time i saw consuela. ciao. pat ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 May 2001 12:46:48 +0100 From: catman Subject: NJC If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days, you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee. I had a blast, I didn't even hit any pedestrians this time around and I also managed to avoid the potholes! Oh and don't let this woman bullshit you, she can play that guitar and sings very well. Give her a time slot at the JoniFest Anne. Yes, of course I got lost. No sooner than I came out of the Holland tunnel, I was in the wrong lane and ended up going up the parking ramp to the Port Authority LOL So now I'm already in a panic, but I managed to find my way to my Chelsea Hotel, checked in and head on down to Judy's Chelsea arriving just about Rose Time. I missed the first set and never got to hear the Mixon's perform (bummer) but I did manage to get smoke in Leslie's eye: ~(Sorry again Leslie) I called Alison & company to let them know I had arrived and they're on there way. I sit at the bar waiting for more people to arrive and in walks Roberto who I've never had the pleasure to meet before, but whom I recognized from his picture. What a sweetheart he is. We chat a bit at the bar and soon Alison, Nikki, Brian, Jeff, Patrick and Julius arrive. We have a drink and smoke our brains out before heading into the Cabaret room where the second set is about to begin. David was awesome of course and his accompanied bass player Dave, just divine. Kay, what can I say about Kay. You guys are in for a treat at JoniFest this year. I hope we hear more from Kay and she comes out of lurkdom. She's a woman of heart and mind. Roberto plays a beautiful piano. I'm looking forward to hearing more of him in Topsfield this year. Ashara get that piano tuned and ready! Alison just never ceases to amaze me with her singing. This woman nails those high notes. Jeff, I think you should follow that dream of yours. Quit your day job honey. Mitch nearly had me in tears with his cabaret rendition of Cherokee Louise. I love this guy. Bob S. from my own home state of Noo Joisey, did some great strumming of California on his acoustic guitar accompanied by our own divine vocalist, Ms. Alison E. After Judy's, Julius and I found our way to Ali's local hangout. Never believe Alison when she tells you she's gonna wait for you. Luckily for Julius and I, I'd been there before and remembered it was right across the street from where she and Jeff lived. All was forgiven ;~) but we did give her hell about it. We hung around a bit and those guys shot a few rounds of pool I head back to my hotel room and call it a night. The next morning we all meet at the Riviera for brunch and yes more cocktails. Nikki and Brian have to leave us and head back home. The sun is breaking through and it looks like it's going to be a Chelsea morning so we go to a music/street fair. After the street fair we promenade through Central Park. Ali guided us through to Willy The Shake's Garden. We caught a glimpse of THOTH who played the violin real good for free (I wonder what's under that gold loincloth?), have an NYC street cart hot dog and head back to Jeff and Ali's before having dinner. (See Alison, I can be from NJ and use big words too) One thing I learned about NY, Don't help feeble old woman across the street and Don't argue with an NYC bus driver. "Mind your own business" The restaurant that is planned for us to have dinner at appears to be closed so we jam at Ali's and Jeff's with no word from Roberto and Patrick :~( We urge Jeff to play for us which he does so beautifully on his new ltd. edition Gibson guitar. Alison was so funny, every time Jeff walked in the room she put his guitar down. It's getting late now so we give up on Patrick and Roberto and decide to order Chinese. After a wonderful dinner we bid our farewells and I head back to Jersey and thanks to Alison, NO, I didn't get lost in my altered state of mind. Thanks for the bandwidth guys and I just want to say thank you to Alison and Jeff for their hospitality. David & Judy Lahm for hosting our Judy's Chelsea JoniFest. Sue and Nate Cameron, you guys know how to party. It was too much fun. Leslie and Steve, again sorry I missed you guys play but please provide us with some MP3's? and... I see.... Patrick, Roberto, Deb, Kay, Nikki, Brian, Bob, I lubs you guys. Last but not least, JULIUS, thanks for protecting me out on the streets. Miss you all already. Well, Ken and I have returned from a worldwind tour of Memphis and Nashville last weekend. Some highlights of our trip..... Watching and listening to Levon Helm (!) play drums at BB King's Blues Club on Beale Street... a complete and wonderful surprise... Seeing some truly funky floor-to-ceiling shag carpeting in the Jungle Room at Graceland, and reading incredible old headlines, including one linking rock-and-roll to the "fall of civilization as we know it" (glad we made it through, somehow)... Standing in Sun Studios with one of the microphones used by Elvis, on a two-room tour that consisted of hearing a number of little ditties like "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Great Balls of Fire" in the very spot where they were recorded... Standing on the stage of the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville....."How-dee!!!!!!! I'm just so proud to be here!" Seeing the old and new Daisy Theatres "staring" at each other from across the street (Ken pointed out that the "new" Daisy is vintage 1940's...) And, of course, we found "Handy cast in bronze, standing in a little park," as we listened to some decent new bands, and I danced a bit on Beale. (The statue went up the year Joni wrote about it, by the way...) I love that song; it is one of the moodiest and experience-rich songs on Hejira, which is basically an album chronicling rich experience. "RJ Anderson, I'm not rich, but I'm gay.......and I am quite familiar with what you play..." ;) Love to all, Steve P.S. Ken and I have noticed that our travels this year seem to hinge around Hejira; we visited Savannah in February, and now Memphis!
