To put it very bluntly, President Bush is an idiot when it comes to economics (and pretty much everything else.) I for one would much rather see the money go to pay down the deficit - even if they just take the retroactive amount, rather than sending everyone a check in September. It may not be the way to get re-elected, but it's a better long term strategy. Went to a performance by the Boston Pops on Sunday night. They performed Copland's Lincoln Portrait. Just listening to Lincoln's eloquent and heartfelt words made me wonder whatever happened to statesmanship... and to answer my own question, I think politicians listen too much to big business and special interests rather than the guiding principles of the law of this country. (to all non-U.S. listers, sorry for the U.S.A.-centric content...) lots of love Anne ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 May 2001 11:27:21 EDT From: MarkPerini@aol.com Subject: Nautilus Court and Spark The Nautilus Court and Spark LP remaster is very good sounding. You should be able to find it for about $40 at record shows. No need to pay more on eBay, except for convenience. Nautilus went out of business about 15 years ago. DCC, which issues gold cd's, including C&S and Blue, also issued a vinyl remaster of C&S. Its probably out of print, but DCC's version of C&S is the best! DCC has the best remastering engineer (Steve Hoffman) and he uses tube equipment for both vinyl and cd remastering. The Nautilus and DCC LP versions of C&S blow the gold and HDCD cd's out of the water. I found DCC's gold C&S cd, and the HDCD cd to be about equal, but different. They both had their strengths and weaknesses. As my system has improved, I prefer the DCC version. Both are good though. I always thought that Taft was the reason for the tradition, as he was so large he had to get up out of the small seat and others in the ballpark would also stand out of respect. My brother-in-law said that Calvin Coolidge's term saw the introduction of the seventh inning stretch. Anyway, that wasn't my point...I mentioned that regardless of who the president was, the thing was that the tradition began because of *respect* for the office of the President. I'm not sure when that was lost, on Kennedy's death, maybe? (the end of Camelot?) Seems like all our leaders now are guilty until proven innocent, maybe that's a misperception on my part... I also thought of Bernie Taupin's line from "Texas Love Song", when he talks of hearts filled with national pride and kids still respecting the President's name. One last thing - the reason I was over at my in-laws house was because my father-in-law died yesterday. So I'll be heading out of town Wednesday(the funeral will be in Illinois) and am not sure what if any kind of e-mail access I'll have. So if you send me a message and I don't respond, don't think me snooty, I'll get back in a week or so... Oops, one MORE last thing: Covers Volume 18 shipments are going out today, I'll put together my "review" and contest when I return. This is the one subject that concerns non Americans as well. Whetehr we like it or not,m what goes on in the US affects us all. Particularly with regard to peace. As with Reagan, the possibilty of WW3 is once again uppermost in our minds. So much charm, wit and passion throughout the whole video. Don't know if its dated or not. The image of Joni climbing into the back of the red sports car with ice skates is too cool. I've always loved S&L, both audio and the video. In fact the only thing I don't like about it is her hair :~) Want to thank everyone who made the trek out to NYC for "our" Jonifest. I had a great time and hope you all had fun touring our insane city. I especially want to thank David Lahm for hosting the entertainment at his lovely cabaret. I love David's piano interpretations of Joni's songs. David and 2 local musician friends also did a knockout version of "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" I also enjoyed finally getting to hear Kay perform live. Kay you're great --please play out more. On Sunday night at the apartment, Alison knocked everyone out with her renditions of "The Times They Are A'Changin'" and "You Ain't Going Nowhere" (Hey, this is a Jonifest, not a "Bobfest"!) She even accompanied herself on guitar quite assuredly -- turns out she had been practicing every day on my new guitar while I was away. The night before at Judy's, Alison wowed everyone with her singing of Ladies of the Canyon, California and Coyote--some of the hardest Joni songs to sing. I kidded Alison that I was going to quit my job and focus all my energy on managing her career, just like Elliot Roberts did with Joni. Hey a guy can dream. Alison and I rented "The Last Waltz" yesterday which I had not seen in a long time. When Joni comes out to sing Coyote, I thought I had figured something out -- Robbie Robertson is Coyote! The way she kisses him and caresses his face before she starts playing... He is such a coyote. (Alison thinks he's cute.) Incidently when I rented the video, I had to sign a credit card authorization for $200. The clerk said that the video is out of print (I think he's right, I had been looking for it for the past six months or so and have not seen it). And he said that there were only a couple of copies of it around for rent in the city. This seems like it would be a prime film for restoration on DVD with a big promo and fanfare and, (hopefully, hopefully) extra footage showing the other songs Joni did that night. Could this be possible? My favorite Joni song lately is "Mr. Tambourine Man" that I got when I visited Ashara last month. Thanks Ashara --- I Love This! It may not be the way to get > re-elected, but it's a better > long term strategy. > This is exactly what our provincial govt did here in Ontario - sent everyone a cheque for $200. Big whoop. They reduced our provincial income tax, but offloaded a lot of what used to be provincially funded programs to the cities, as a result of which, our city (property) tax is going up and/or we're now paying user fees, or higher user fees for programs that used to be free or much cheaper. The govt giveth with one hand and taketh away with the other, but apparently this ploy works with some taxpayers, time after time. And the different levels of govt keep pointing the finger at the other levels - the feds aren't giving enough to the provinces, the feds and the provinces aren't giving enough to the cities, the schoolboards are crying the blues because the province and the city aren't giving them enough. And so it goes. Sometimes I wish we just had one great big tax so we could just write one cheque to cover the whole thing - I really don't care what level of govt I'm paying it to, it's all going to the same place, as far as I'm concerned. And I'd only have to pay a service fee for one cheque, not three or four different ones!
