We were discussing the lynchings of African Americans in the 1880's and 90's and Ida B. Wells effort to have them stopped. She mentioned this line and stated how they would make actuall postcard-like memorabilia of a recent hanging. She also mentioned that the line was referring to that time period. That may have been true, but I think if anything it represents more of what was going on in the 1960's in the south and elsewhere in the United States. All sides of the political fence want to do the tax cut thing (they have only been quibbling about the amounts). We ARE still primarily a capitalist system at this point and not socialist. Such a system gives back to the people a bit of what they put in. They then turn around and put it back somehow into the economy and everyone (seller and buyer) pays some kind of tax on it so it funnels back to the government, right? > At last we are delivered from the possibility of a stable middle class. What a set list! I wish I could have been there for that. It was amazing as usual. You should have heard us all doing back-up on Ray's Dad's Cadillac! Even thought we all fessed up that we LOVED that song, somehow Marian made it sound even better. This really could be a wonderful group song at a Jonifest. Another stunner surprise for me was when Marian broke right into Day After Day, one of Joni's very first songs and her first demo.
