I asked a man to help and he did, he changed the tyre for me. he didn't think it odd. Although I did. In Australia in the early 70's at school the boys were taught to cook at school. Strange for such a macho place(sheep station country). but if you think about it, many man lived and worked in the bush on their own so would have to know general domestic stuf like cooking. Apart from that tho it was not the place for the type of boy I was to live and be accepted. I was definately a fish out water there. I took agriculture classes. i was naive. i did so because I love animals. In class one day we were to castrate lambs by holdin them between our legs and just cutting their balls off. I refused. I was told to find another subject to take. I was only 13 and a child but 13 was mature out there in the outback. It always bothers me that the "f" word has gotten such a bad rap. Most political movements have a radical (and usually angry) faction; one that really makes waves and "gets in people's faces." Unfortunately, later on, these are the people everyone focuses on in a negative way. (e.g. Rush Limbaugh's term "feminazi") It's sad because they are the people that are instrumental in getting the movement noticed and then we end up being embarrassed by them. Lesbians were very vocal and a major part of the early feminist movement and now everyone thinks that if you are a feminist, you must be a man hating dyke. The gay rights movement is much the same. How many times have we heard, "It's okay if you're gay, just don't be so vocal about it?" I admire people who have the guts to be "out there." It's not easy. So what if it is kind of late 70s early 80s. It looks good on her! (Also kind of resembles my ex-wife's perm same era, which looked good on her too at that length.) The little artsy stuff (coyote and mouse, Joni and luggage, the skater or dancer or whatever he was, even the James Dean segments and the rock and roll dancers) can all go. That is very dated. I say that knowing that a lot of my work from that period I wouldn't want the world to see now because it is that dated too. If all the stuff that I say should go had been woven into a more integral part of the video, maybe, but it just interrupts the video IMHO. Even the clips of Amelia Earhart seem intrusive. (My ex father in law knew Amelia by the way, and said she was a great pilot, very touch, and a foul mouth.) I was caught up by the A Earhart story when I was just a kid, it always moves me to see clips of her, but they seem intrusive in this video, tossed in because they could be. I guess I'd prefer a straight concert film or MTV type video. But this was early in the video development. And I still like her hair. For Why Do Fools Fall In Love, she says "let me bring the Persuasions back on" but they hadn't been "on" in this video prior... Why does Joni always do this oldie? I'd be interested in hearing her do some others that wewre her favorites when she was growing up. Some of the graphic ideas were obviously borrowed from Celebration at Big Sur. Shadows and Light is a gripping song, almost like a hymn, catches me every time I hear it. With the Persuasions backing her on S&L it verges on being a gospel tune. I'd like to hear some arrange that and with the right choir have Joni gospel rock out on S&L! It fact, the song cries out for that treatment. The picture quality of the DVD beats the video by so far there is no comparison. I have no sound system and have noted the Dolby 5.1 thing but the sound does seem better on my tv than the video. Are those four inch heels she is wearing? At least three. The three cheap-o features that come include a songlist (big deal, we have that oln the packaging), a two paragraph biography that says nothing except that Madonna says C&S was her favorite album in high school. Very lame biography. Three previews: Moody Blues singing from Days of Future Passed with an orchestra (who can't like that other than it is only 60 seconds or so?), some artsy documentary clips of the Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" also for 60 seconds, and Will Smith, Ricky Martin, Sting, Cher, all saying happy birthday to Tina Turner for forty seconds and a very brief clip of Tina singing some song that I never heard (long odds for that one). Now that I have reviewed in every possible way, thnk you catherine for posting it was available as I never would have known with her alert! I really like the DVD much more than the video. Any male children would be aborted/killed. These sort of ideas don't come from a politcl desire for equality but from a seriously disturbed psyche. you are right, Kerry, the extremes always give an idea a bad name. It was one of the most enjoyable times in my life so far. I think that time really does function in a cyclical manner as I've recently had very strong memories/impressions of New Orleans for no particular reason other than I was there a year ago on this very weekend. I'll never forget playing Neil Young "Long May You Run" and watching Kakki, Michael, John, Claudia, Leslie and Steve all walk into the room. And recently I was talking to Kevin Danzig at a show in the Georgia mountains, and we were talking about the joni tribute show and I mentioned how I had opened it up with "Free Man in Paris" and he said that originally that was the song he had wanted to do, but it was taken, and so he had to learn something new. He and Wooley played in Alto at the same place Kate played last month. Anyway, I've been writing a lot of songs on the piano lately for some reason but this is a good thing, as I seem to be breaking into some new territory. Michael, I hope I'll have a chance to play this song in New Orleans soon. :~) Sailing to New Orleans (c) 2001 Victor Johnson I've parted so many rivers, Forded many streams. Always changing direction, Following my dreams. Watching wine turn to water, Though I haven't had my fill, you know I, Fell in love with the countryside, But I'm in the city still. I'm just waiting for my ship to come in, Gonna sail to New Orleans, And walk the streets till dawn. And we'll fall in love again and again, Who knows where it stops or it ends, I'm just waiting for my ship to come in. I've seen so many people, Watched them come and go. Some of them seemed to be angels, Others I'll never know. Sometimes I stop and wonder, How I can look inside and see Just how your heart is doing today, Well, you do the same for me, and I'm just waiting... Walking down by the bay, looking out on the water, An old man sings us the blues for a dollar or two. And it's a lovely night out on the harbour. He sounds just like Otis, but noone seems to notice. For those of you who don't play the guitar, she is one of several guitarists who created and maintain the Joni guitar site. These are very patient, talented individuals who have gone to some extremes in order to figure out Joni's tunings and her chord shapes so we can play them ourselves. I relearned how to play my guitar after putting it down for nearly 16 years as a result of going to the tablature site at jonimitchell.com and seeing just how the Joan does it. Even though Marian was jetlagged and on her last ounce of energy, she wowed us later at Kakki's cool apartment in the sky with renditions of lesser played Joni songs including The Wolf That Lives in Lindsey. When's the last time you heard a live version of that one? It was great to meet her and her talented sister Jennifer who also sings and plays. We met for dinner at Joni's fave Hollywood hang out, Les Deux Cafe which is behind an obscure building in a pretty grungy area of the city which is going through a renovation right now. The patio is very pretty with lots of trees and it's easy to see why Joni likes this place -- you can smoke, and the food is sublime. I had squab which was tender and filleted and sauced in an intense reduction with just a hint of thyme, a puree of turnips and braised cabbage with hazelnuts and bacon. The best dessert was a chartreuse ice cream sandwiched between layers of a chewy meringue. Like Joni, I will have to sell a song like "Both Sides Now" before I could eat there every night. As for Steve and Michelle, Rick and Brad, Kakki and Marian, well, JMDL people are interesting, fun and really pleasant to be with. hugs, Clark NP: Depeche Mode ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 May 2001 15:00:26 EDT From: FMYFL@aol.com Subject: Re: New Orleans(njc) In a message dated 5/26/01 2:31:58 PM Eastern Daylight Time, waytoblu@mindspring.com writes: > I was just thinking about how much I enjoyed being in New Orleans at this > time last year. It was my first Joni-fest experience, and I was so nervous meeting some of my "Joni" friends for the first time. I too think Joni looks very sexy and gorgeous in this film. Just watching her play and enjoy herself with Pat, Don, Jaco, & Michael is a real treat! I'm not sure I understood your question about "Fools"...she did it on this tour ONLY, and it was a great addition, as lyrically it did such a great job of summing up herself..."Why Do Fools Fall In Love"...anyway, when she toured again in '83, she did "Heard It Through the Grapevine", another oldie she liked, and in '98 she added "Comes Love", another REAL oldie from Billie, one of her influences. Obviously, she may have varied her shows a bit on the S&L tour, but she is generally not the type to REALLY mix things up night to night, she'll vary her set SOME but pretty much stick to what she's rehearsed with her band. She prides herself on being professional that way... Stereo uses two speakers, left and right-with potentially different sounds coming from each one. A 5.1 system has left and right front speakers, a center speaker between them (good for localizing movie dialogue), and left and right rear speakers. Some concert videos are mixed using the rear speakers for audience ambience, to try to recreate the concert experience with the musicians in front, the other approach is to route musical program through them-surrounding you with the band. The point 1 refers to a subwoofer for handling the lower bass frequencies. Placement isn't too important for a sub- your ear isn't very sensitive to location. Of course, you need a separate amplifier to drive each speaker-all convieniently housed in a modern 5.1 receiver. BTW- I have not yet heard a 5.1 system BTW2 - I just found out that The Last Waltz is being mixed for 5.1 for the coming dvd. This post is overdue. When I saw Sherelle's post the other day, I knew I'd have to introduce the newer folks like Megan and Anne to my appreciation for Sherelle's musicianship. Sherelle attended the JoniFest Pittsburgh, hosted by my friend, a dear human being and a smart alec herself, Julie Z. Webb. For those who haven't heard Sherelle sing, WOW, ARE YOU IN FOR A TREAT!! She has an exquisite voice. Among JMDLers, she's in the highest eschelon, along with ___ and ___. (Fill in your favorites.) Oh, my. Sherelle's voice. She gives you the feeling that she can go anywhere the moment strikes her to go, like ___. Similarly, she's very offhand about performing, like ___. Best of luck, bud. Hope to see you in Topsfield. All the best, Lama ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 May 2001 00:54:40 +0100 From: catman Subject: Re: feminism NJC They would make sure sperm was deposuited in a bank before despatching the men! Victor thanks for the lyrics. They are beautiful and its nice to know that I wasnt the only one smitten by that wonderful time. It was like a dream. Theres about four or five acts that played at the howlin wolf that I would give anything to hear again. Leslie Smith (Sex kills) , Beth Patterson (Ladies of the Canyon), Danzig & Wooley (Trouble Child), Michael Paz (Hejira), David Lahm (Wayne Swirled) Brian ( Black Crowe), Little Queenie (Good bye Pork Pie Hat), Jason Marsalis Shades of Scarlett Conquering & Dreamland), Leslie Mixon poem reading with Tiger Bones as background music), all the JMDLrs, Jack Neilsen doing Blue Boy and so many more. These moments are like indelibly imprinted in my mind. The crocadile next to the freeway, and laying on the grass in the stifling sweet smelling plantation, the French quarter. Makes me look forward to Toipsfield. marcel deste ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 May 2001 01:34:22 -0500 From: Scott and Jody Subject: Re: New Orleans(njc) Victor, Beautiful lyrics! I can't wait to hear the music! I picture you, Joni, Paz and Keb' Mo performing this piece together!! Sailing to New Orleans (c) 2001 Victor Johnson I've parted so many rivers, Forded many streams. I'm just waiting... jody ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2001 #235 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
