But, as Kakki said, it still sounds an incredible project. I see on your site at http://www.booksoncsn.com that the publishers, Gopher, have a Scottish office. Will it be available in the UK from there, do you know? Also, any idea (roughly) as to how much it will cost? - sounds like a great Christmas present idea for my list to Santa! Talking of bios, I recently heard from Karen O'Brien who is writing "Joni Mitchell: Shadows and Light", which is due be published by Virgin in October. (She had been interviewing Gene Shay, who had put her on to me). She writes: "The book isn't an authorised work as such but is being done with the full knowledge of Joni and her management, and Joni has been very kind in agreeing that people like Larry Klein, Graham Nash and others can talk to me if they want to do so........Joni will also have the opportunity to read the ms so I imagine there'll be some feedback from her -- good, I hope !" Karen also writes: "I discovered the jmdl last year when starting my research and a couple of the members have been very helpful with providing tapes etc. The jmdl founder Les Irvin has also been great." I sent her the Rick Scott hitch-hiking story and she replied: "What a lovely anecdote! Thanks so much for sending that. Would you or your friend mind if I tried to work in a little of it -- it's a great illustration of Joni's ease with people in general (I actually have not heard a single bad thing about Joni's interactions with fans; quite rare for people in the public eye!)." I also mentioned Bob's covers project and she wrote "Yes, I did know about the Covers project; I am already planning to run a brief section in the Appendix detailing a selection of high-profile or unusual covers (I'll ask Bob if he wants me to put in a line, suggesting people contact him with more ideas)." She ends by saying "the book launch party which will be in October some time, almost certainly at the wonderful Helter Skelter music bookshop in Denmark St." [in London]. Anyway, what can I say, I was blown away, on a lot of levels....First and foremost, I never thought of Joni as an "emerging artist." The first album of her's that I bought was Court and Spark (when she was already established), and I worked my way backwards (and forwards) from there. To hear her introducing/explaining songs like "Both Sides Now" to a small audience in an intimate setting is amazing. When I heard her introduce "All I Want" as a work in progress, and "Cactus Tree" as something she had written earlier that day, I almost drove off the road. And I never realized what a "hippie/folkie" she was back then, there is one segment where she is describing her dulcimer that was just FAR OUT MAN. And boy was she chatty, Leo Kottke and the Indigo Girls have nothing on her. Many, many interesting musical moments, and intros that shed light on a lot of her songs. Surprise highlight (for which the repeat button on CD players was invented for) was the groovin version of "Dreamland" complete with Kazoo? Mitch PS - Here she is in the late 60's talking about London, and she mentions taking a ride on a double-decker bus with "no driver on the top," man is she "poop shoobie" or what? Actually, "Black Market" is a good one too by Weather Report and their live album 8:30 or Jaco's Solo Record. Speaking of Jaco, I got to talk to his wife Ingrid on the Italian Joe Zawinul Chat Room. She was very genuine and sweet. I asked her how Jaco felt about touring in '79 with JOni and she said that he never really talked about it much. Also, I didnt want to ask too many probing questions. Yet I did want to ask more, but I suddenly got disconnected and had to wait 10 mins to get back online. Nevertheless, she was really fun to chat with as well as the others on the chat room. However, > I *DID* learn all about textiles in Georgia, and > what the major exports > were in all these states that meant nothing to me. This explains why I was turned off both history and geography at an early age and, once I had a choice, I dropped them like hot patooties. Once past Grade 10 history was history to me. My daughter, now in Grade 8, has, in the past few years, studied the usual dead white guys discovering/ conquering/ exploring/sailing up the whutzit river and yawn and yawn. On the other hand, they also learn about aboriginal peoples (something we were taught little of) and every now and then something female is thrown in (wherever they can find it buried by or among the dead white guys.) We had a good chance to talk about the shitty deal the Spaniards gave the Incas (including murdering their emperor, genocide, the usual stuff) and I'm pleased to say that Sarah has a keen sense of the injustices done throughout the ages. I knew it was time to deal with the Santa thing when she was about 7 and said that if Santa gave presents only to rich kids, then he was mean and it wasn't fair. Like you, i have no idea why studying what is produced where is so important, but let's face it, we're a business and product-oriented society, esp. here in Ontario (centre of the universe) with the gov't we have (let the private sector handle everything because they did it so well). I'm sure I could probably still get 40/50 on a test of what the capitals of all the US states are, although what use this might be to me outside of a trivia contest (with big stakes, else I'm not playing!) I have no idea. But it's there, in my brain, in case I ever need it. Enjoy your baby! He dosen't mention the influence Dylan cover versions had on Dylan himself. The House Of The Rising Sun by The Animals was the first folk/rock record a good year and a half before Dylan went electric. I think Alan Price's organ playing on that record influenced Dylan to use organ so prominently on Like A Rolling Stone, Positively 4th Street etc. The Byrds fusion of folk and mersybeat on Mr Tambourine Man and Jimi Hendrix's psychedelic All Along Watchtower changed the wayDylan did those songs. I can't go to the Dylan convention in Manchester but I am going to see the man himself in Kilkenny next month on his third Irish show this year. Before Dylan, artists like Elvis, Chuckleberry, early Beatles etc aspired to successful show business careers. Dylan gave rock a bohemian and political dimension that set it apart from show business for a while. Before him the bitch and moan themes of pop were cars, the boss, surf (or lack thereof), girls and boys etc. Dylan on the other hand bitched at a level that suggested he was in possession of some kind of supreme knowledge. I couldn't separate Dylan from Joni and say one is better. They're both essential. And they have very similar history - small town people who came to the big city, rockers who used the folk idiom for their own purpose. They both did things with music that had never been done before. In the top right hand corner I see the face of a man with thick heavy eyebrows. My guess would be Jack Palance, but I doubt it's him :~).......then the mouth of Jack becomes the eye of a profile of a beautiful woman, which to me looks like Joni. (the chin from Jack becomes Joni's nose). Okay, I am on some cold medication, but that's just what I see!!!
