It is a common term in these parts in reference to our neighbors to the north. I do admit I had never heard it before I moved to Seattle, however. The CBC comedy show 'This Hour Has 22 Minutes' has a bit that they do every now & then called 'Talking to Americans'. This guy named Rick Mercer (he hosted this year's Juno awards) comes down to a U S city and asks people totally ridiculous questions about Canada such as 'Should Saskatchewan have the same coastal waters fishing rights as the U S?' The Americans tend to act like they know what he's talking about and make total fools of themselves by showing their complete ignorance about Canada. I said, "Sure. Why not? Is there anything *better* in popular music that I should be whistling?" "No, not at all!" he said. "Wait a minute, Jason; you're a songwriter. Have you ever heard about the famous Paul McCartney song called "Scrambled Egg"? He was puzzled. "Huh? 'Scrambled Egg'?" "Yeah," sez I. "It was about 1965 and McCartney woke up one morning with this tune in his head. He hummed it. He found it at the piano but he couldn't place it. He asked around over a period of days. 'Is this Fats Domino? It sounds like a piano song. I don't remember the words but the syllables fit like this: Scrambled egg, do da do da do ta dum dee dummmmmmm.' No one had heard it before. He was driving everyone crazy trying to figure out what this song was and eventually someone just blurted out, "Paul, it's **YOURS**!" - --- After he worked out some lyrics, "Scrambled Egg" went sorta like this: "Scrambled egg, all my troubles seemed so far away. Now it looks as though they're here to stay. Oh, I believe... in scrambled egg......" All the best, Lama np: Shawn's "Dead Of the Night" and before that it was Kate's "Over The Moon" disc. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 02:27:54 -0400 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Definitions of "Yankee", was Re: yankee yachts??? NJC Helen asked Dr. Linguist, >>Aren't "yankees" the "northern" americans, ie. the ones who were on Lincoln's side in the Civil War (excuse my profound ignorance of American history here)!<< Yankee is a slippery word. As Kakki pointed out, those of less fortunate nationality frequently call all of us USA-born people yankees. And yes, the losers of the American Civil War, (er... I mean "our southern _cousins_") call the victorious Northerners "yankees" as if we were some foreign entity, inflicting a nasty concept (called equality?) upon them. ANYWAY..... There's a baseball team called the New York Yankees. Furthermore, in north eastern USA ("New England" if you will), I believe that they like to call themselves "yankee" as a kind of regional singifier for excellence. (My mother frequented a used bookseller's shop called "The Yankee Peddler", for example.) Nobody calls another a "yankee" in the midwest. I've also heard the word "yankee" as a synonym for thrifty. As in, "Yeah, he's collects cameras. But he's sort of a _yankee_ camera collector; he only buys folding Kodaks!" All the best, Dr. Linguist Remember Dr. Linguist isn't a *real* doctor. He has a *masters* degree... in *linguistics*! (I stole that from Duck's Breath Incorporated, all rights reserved) " Darn right He says 'We walked on the moon. You be polite.' " I stole that from the only Joni song so far to use the word "notches".
