He was in his very early twenties when he was conscripted into the Canadian Armed Forces during WWII. He survived, but many of his friends didn't, and I think this has haunted him ever since. Now that I'm 45, I know something of how my dad feels. Friends have lost their children to illnesses like leukemia, teenagers in my community have been murdered by their classmates, and people much younger than I have died for many reasons, all of which seem unjust. It seems so self-involved to me to worry about turning 30 or 40 or 50. Be grateful. Remember that Anne Frank, who never even got to be a twenty-something, made a permanent contribution to our culture. Whenever you feel pissed off that you're getting older, with all that entails (wrinkles, bags under the eyes, bloated middle, middle-aged eyesight), think about her. Raise a glass to the moment and be thankful that you're alive to raise it. After all, Joni's influences include figures like Miles Davis (who probably didn't even know who Bob Dylan was) and Sergei Rachmaninoff. Plus Chuck Berry and lots of '40s swing bands. Joni has said many times that upon hearing the lyrics of Positively Fourth Street she felt that popular songs could confront anything and be poetry. Obviously that was a major incentive lyrically. Musically, Joni owes nothing to anybody. Bob Dylan is great, no question. But I don't think Laura Nyro owes anything to him, or Tom Waits (who is, IMHO, a better songwriter). Or Joni Mitchell, even if Dylan gave her a necessary shove in the right direction. That's my humble opinion. Sheesh! Got that off my chest ;-) Roberto _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 May 2001 06:52:44 EDT From: Kammass@aol.com Subject: Fwd: Wanna visit Joni's house? It's like me sending mail to Colin, but asking Microsoft's mail server to deliver it for me. No-one likes their bandwidth or machine horsepower being used for free by other people, which is why mail servers mostly do not permit relaying. Additionally, servers that will allow relaying allow spammers to upload one copy of a spam message, with a huge list of recipients, letting the poor mail server do all the hard work of delivering to tens of thousands of hapless recipients. If you're sending mail around and getting errors about relaying not being permitted, it's due to a cock-up somewhere, but not usually your own. Someone somewhere has mis-configured a bit of Internet. Someone not accepting relayed e-mail is not an acceptable reason for mail not arriving: the problem lies somewhere else... There's another possible explaination. When e-mail is shipped between computers, each letter is actually given a number somewhere between 1 and 255. In binary, that's eight bits (binary digits) of information, or a byte. A is 65 for example. All of the common stuff you use (letters, numbers, symbols) has a number below 128 - which handily fits into *seven* bits. Some accented characters have numbers greater than 128 - using the full eight bits. Now the kicker. Some mail gateways (generally, older ones) will only deal with the first seven bits - throwing away the eigth one and turning one accented letter into another ordinary one. On the other hand, it could be something else entirely :) - --Chris ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 May 2001 18:00:05 +0100 From: "Chris Marshall" Subject: RE: NJC CD Burner query The only thing I can think of is that the burnt CD has been made in "mixed mode" instead of the audio only format. Thank you both for sharing so generously, the sorrow in your heart. Know that you are not alone. As Wallistah said, you are loved very much. *** Then a woman said, Speak to us of Joy and Sorrow. And he answered: Your joy is your sorrow unmasked. And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears. And how else can it be? The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you contain. Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter's oven? And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives? When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy. When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight. Some of you say, "Joy is greater than sorrow." and others say, "Nay, sorrow is the greater." But I say unto you, they are inseparable. Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed. Verily you are suspended like the scales between your sorrow and your joy. Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced. When the treasure-keeper lifts you to weigh his gold and his silver, needs must your joy or your sorrow rise or fall. *** with love and in strength, MagsnBri hands alike magnets and iron the souls always. - -- - --------------------------------------------------------------------- _~O / /\_, ___/\ /_ - ----------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 May 2001 10:32:41 -0700 (PDT) From: Alison E Subject: Re: Another "Almost Famous" Thread SJC he's referring to the earlier scenes in the movie, when the sister leaves home and gives him her albums. that's the part that takes place in '69. i think cameron had to use blue, it was such a quick shot and its the most visually memorable album by joni for most people. he knew it would be recognized. alison e. in nyc seen the movie 6 times, and i'll probably see it 6 more. if only for the scene when they all sing "mona lisas and mad hatters" on the bus. - --- blonde in the bleachers wrote: > Almost Famous took place in 1973, it says it on the > bus. > > >From: Mark Domyancich > >Anyways, she mentioned how "Almost Famous" took > place in 1969, but "Blue" > >didn't come out until 1971. > >Mark Domyancich Yahoo! To quote Paz, "waaaaaaaaaaaa, I wanna be there!" I am a big Sheryl Crow fan!!!!! My condolences to Jimmy & Paz for the loss of your loved ones.... Paz, that is an incredible poem your friend wrote you, have you thought about putting it to music? I Bow To Chuck Berry. IMO he is the King of Rock & Roll. IMO his influence is very much in all of the best of those great rockin songs. On aging: (here is how I look at it after looking back on times when I thought I was old but looking back I was so young!) (njc) I'm 45 and a cancer survivor. My body still feels young. Even after all it's been through. Well, except I've started jogging, which feels great when I do it, but seems to be wreaking havoc on my knees and back. So, I think I might go back to skating, which, unlike a certain JMDLer, I actually do - honest! (Hi Jimmy...) So the alternative to getting older is to be dead. I don't think it's the BEING dead that's so bad, it's getting there. The universe should have a rule - you should never see it coming. THAT's the really sucky part. I think after I'm dead whatever is left of me will be happy. I won't just feel the wind, I'll BE the wind. I won't be on the water, I'll BE the water. Even though she's been gone a year and a half, I think my mom still sends me messages. During tough times, I see things that are unusual - like antique boxes from the chocolate factory that was turned into condos that she lived in. Or a truck from the nursery where she used to buy plants -in a completely weird location. It's like she's trying to tell me she still cares. So, thank goodness, love doesn't die. To Paz and Jimmy - sorry about your losses. Let the love live on. lots of love Anne ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 May 2001 17:07:30 -0700 From: Randy Remote Subject: Re: Why Bob Dylan? Like I was now officially an adult. Thing is, I don't feel like I'm old, nor do I act it. Maybe that is one of the benefits of working with children and coaching. Being around my own teenagers keeps me in tune with what is happening as well. The numbers, though, they haunt me. I can now see why women reach 39 and remain there for years. I was in serious denial about this last birthday but luckily there were five others on our staff who either turned 40 or 50 within a few weeks. We decided to throw this huge party with gag gifts only and I have never laughed so hard in my life. This whole age thing reminds me of the first line of A Tale of Two Cities...It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. I hate the fact that my body is ageing, but as Colin mentioned, have never felt so comfortable in my saggy old skin! Take care! Then a few years go by, and now he's 15 and touring with the band. It does begin before the release of Blue, but I like the explanation (who was it said that?) about the possibility of the different classic albums the kid is flipping through kind of being symbolic of the passage of time. - --- blonde in the bleachers wrote: > Almost Famous took place in 1973, it says it on the > bus. > > > >From: Mark Domyancich > >Reply-To: Mark Domyancich > >To: JMDL > >Subject: Another "Almost Famous" Thread > >Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 20:01:25 -0500 > > > >Hey guys, > > > >This might have been mentioned when "Almost Famous" > was all the talk on > >this > >list. There was the glass of wine, the blue TV screen light and there was even the cartoon coaster on the bar. When she showed the painting here in L.A. I peered at that coaster on three different occasions, trying to discern what she scribbled on it. Straight on it looked like a rudimentary fence with a long-stemmed rose doodled off to one side. My old friend Sue came into town tonight to visit for a few days. She is the one I've mentioned who introduced me to Joni's music (the cover versions) back in '66. I unfurled my set of BSN lithos for her tonight and she immediately said "there's the map of Canada on the cartoon coaster." I said "where???" So she turned the litho upside down and sure enough there are all the Canadian provinces outlined. I asked how she figured that out and she said "well, you have to look at it from the angle Joni was drawing it." Well, duh! I don't know if anyone else has noticed the map but thought this was cool and was glad Joni completed all the necessary detail in the painting. ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2001 #222 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
