Though I said the other day that WTRF and DED can hardly compare favorably to C&S and Blue, I have to add now that I have always enjoyed the 80's work immensely, especially CMIARS, perhaps largely because of the complexity and quality of the production. So I wouldn't necessarily rank the 80s work lower in terms of its importance to me, though I recognize it doesn't seem to have the lasting impact of the classics (yes, this is hard to explain....) Also, many of you may be interested in a special concert series coming up during much of the rest of this year: The Judy Collins Wildflower Festival, featuring Judy, Roger McGuinn, Janis Ian and Richie Havens (and perhaps others). Go to judycollins.com or janisian.com for a schedule. I saw Judy, Janis and Roger in a similar show three years ago in Seattle and it was fantastic. Judy is a still a captivating performer (and when in good voice a helluva singer still); Janis (a long-time favorite of mine) has become a kick-ass guitar player and her voice has grown stronger with age; Roger plays a phenomenal 12-string guitar and sings Byrds and folk-rock classics. Not so familiar with Richie, but I'm sure he'll round out the show well. Bryan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 01:15:08 -0400 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Why Bob Dylan? NJC Chuck Berry, 1963: If everybody had an ocean Across the U. S. A. Then everybody'd be surfin' Like Californi-a You'd seem 'em wearing their baggies Huarachi sandals too A bushy bushy blonde hairdo Surfin' U. S. A. Bob Dylan, 1965: You say I let you down You know it's not like that If you're so hurt Why then don't you show it You say you lost your faith But that's not where it's at You had no faith to lose And you know it *** From: Catherine McKay What is it precisely about him that's supposed to be so innovative? I don't find his music particularly "new" - - - his music IMO is pretty predictable. Is it the lyrics? I agree that Joni does pay him tribute, and I'm not trying to be sarcastic, or a pain in the ass - I just don't get it! Somebody please enlighten me! *** Bobby's world isn't all sunshine and sand. Neither is mine. Lama ps. No offense to Chuck Berry. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 01:21:40 EDT From: RoseMJoy@aol.com Subject: The Music Slut arrived at the home of "The Boss" today NJC When I learned this morning that his Bobness would be in town, I managed to tear him away from a business meeting this evening. He was in fact just a few miles away from where I live. Christ, I could throw a stone at him! No way could I let him leave NJ without seeing him. I took Bob Muller over to this place in New Brunswick called the "Harvest Moon." We caught a band called the Metroid. They played some sort of strange music (improvised drums and bass) I'll have the music slut describe this in better detail. We sucked down a few "Pale Moons" and had a few laughs and shared some nachos. It was great seeing Bob's smiling face. Oh and yeah, I did manage to get lost in Rutgers campus. LOL I'm sure he's gonna tell you just what a dumb shit I am. Thanks Bob for taking the time out of your busy schedule. NJC Lama, I may be wrong but can't imagine Berry wrote all the lyrics to this song - there are too many "local" references in it that only a native like Brian Wilson would have known at the time. > Chuck Berry, 1963: > If everybody had an ocean > Across the U. S. A. > Then everybody'd be surfin' > Like Californi-a > Bobby's world isn't all sunshine and sand. Neither is mine. > Lama Yeah, but those surf, sand and sun songs were great for getting one out of a funk and up to dance, or prodding one out of adolescent self-absorption to get out in the fresh air and sunshine. In SoCal we really didn't have Greenwich Village-type coffeehouses and the like in which to seek solace back in the old days - the beach was not only a "scene" but a major place of solace and refuge for many. Brian could even be a bit pensive himself back then - THE SURFER MOON (Brian Wilson) 1963 There's a moon in the sky somewhere I know Waiting for all the love to burn below If you fall and it happens all to soon Blame it all on the surfer moon 'Neath the hill 'hind the cloud one dreamy night Rising up throwing down its golden light If your heart hears this melancholy tune Then you'll know it's the surfer moon Brings the tide in Takes it all away Helps us ride in Brings us waves each day I say Other moons have brought light and love before Promising to remain for evermore But they all disappeared with each new tune They make way for the surfer moon Sure, it ain't Dylan, but it's sweet ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2001 #219 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
