I didn't know that Bob. I apologise for giving the impression that she stood by all her work. The only name that appears on the cover of my copy of DED is Joni Mitchell and I still have a hard time picturing her being "produced" into a corner she didn't want to be in. Philip ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 May 2001 22:45:34 +0100 From: "Martin Giles" Subject: Re: jonis best album/s&l lyrics Ron - just delurking to reassure you that you are not alone in putting s&l right up there in the 'favourite album' stakes. This was the album that got me into Joni in the first place, (I came to Her Siquombness rather late). For the most part, I prefer studio albums to live albums, but not in this case. Joni and the Metheny/Pastorius/Brecker/Mayes/Alias band bring the Mingus tracks to glittering life, and the whole 'In France They Kiss On Main Street' to 'Hejira' sequence is pure magic to me. For years I wanted, but couldn't get hold of, the video of the album. Then finally a couple of years ago it was released again. I went out and bought a new VCR that could play NTSC videos, and paid the high price/import duties/VAT on the tape, only to lose both the video and the VCR within a couple of months in a burglary. Didn't stop going out and getting another VCR and another copy of the video though! I reckon I have spent about 300 pounds just to be able to watch S&L on video, but no matter - I'll love it 'til my dying day. The top 10 joni song poll that started this thread is a pretty good representation of my favourite tracks -even though I hadn't voted myself. The Last Time I Saw Richard is definitely up there for me. It seems to encapsulate so much of what Joni's life has been about. The way she often contrasts the way her own life has turned out with others that she knows/has known - Song For Sharon is another one that comes to mind in that way. I love her piano playing on 'The Last Time' also. She has such a beautiful touch, right down to the slight pause before the very last chord of the song, and the voicing of the chord and the weight are so perfect. I often end up straining to listen to the very end of the die-away of that chord, hanging on as long as I can to the moment. Makes the hairs go up on the back of my neck just thinking about it! atb, Martin. I just love reading this type of interview with Joni. She puts so many thoughts out there. In this part she pretty much says what I was fumbling around with a while back in comparing the standards to Joni's music: JM: The standards had a lot of melodic movement and a very simple statement broken up into short phrases. Whereas the folk music of the singer/songwriter movement was losing the sophistication of melody and harmony, but it was gaining longer, lyrical lines. (snip) BC: Does "Both Sides Now" seem different to you in its most recent incarnation from when you first recorded it? JM: It's different every night, depending upon what happens to you just before you go on stage. You bring different things to it, and that's probably the beauty of its being vague rather than specific, in that it remains interpretable and changeable. Me again: So Joni herself is saying that a simpler lyric is more interpretable than a more complex one. She also made some interesting comments about Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday and the type of material that each sang. Great interview but Mr. Enright could have been a little more careful with some of his facts in his intro. 'Slouching' coming from 'Leda and the Swan'? And 'The Only Joy in Town' set in Spain? The Spanish Steps, yes, but I believe those are in Rome, Italy. Nit-picky, ain't I? It was also interesting to read Joni's take on what her marriage to Chuck was about in contrast to what he had to say about it. Sounds like a real swell guy, ol' Chuck. Well, I have to make an admission here - when I first heard the song and read the lyrics I thought she was referring to the Spanish Steps in downtown L.A. where there used to be a black man who stood nearby everyday with flowers in his hair and who sometimes serenaded the noontime lunch crowd passing by on saxophone! Other times he would just sing out something from like Stevie Wonder. He was always joyful and definitely drank in the crowd like oxygen. Maybe it's Joni's duality at work again. I definitely could adapt the song to my own experiences ;-) > It was also interesting to read Joni's take on what her marriage to > Chuck was about in contrast to what he had to say about it.
