This is wonderful! I've now got a very sore, stiff neck, because I was so enthralled in this article, I didn't move once! I suggest this is required reading for everyone on this list. A beautiful and insightful piece of work. You get a big tick, a gold star AND a smiley face! And even though payola supposedly ended years ago, it apparently still happens. But, on the other hand, here in Seattle (an unusually enlightened city, I must say), I've heard Joni on the radio five times in the last ten days, and that was with very limited listening time...I've heard Free Man in Paris, Sometimes I'm Happy, Dry Cleaner from Des Moines, Trouble Man (twice), The Man I Love (yes, two of these are from other artists' CDs, but the announcer always emphasizes Joni). These were heard mainly on our jazz-oriented public radio station (KPLU), which has a fairly substantial listenership, and really embraces Joni as a jazz artist. I also hear lots of cuts from Blue and LOTC, and occasionally newer songs, in the supermarket, believe it or not. Thanks! Actually I couldn't get to sleep last night and part of the reason was that I realized there are at least two errors in the thing. I said something about the absence of horns & woodwinds on 'Hejira' and of course there is the clarinet after the Benny Goodman line in the title track and also the horns on 'Refuge of the Roads'. I also said that 'Two Grey Rooms' was the last of Joni's official releases that featured her playing piano. I guess I forgot about the piano on 'Not To Blame'. Les! I need to do a rewrite! I kind of re-discovered this song when we were talking about great phrases from Joan's songs. "Hollow-grey-fire-escape-thief....Edgy-black cracks of the sky, pin-cushion-prick fix this poor bad dreamer.....sparks fly up from sweet fire, black soot of lady release.....concrete concentration camp bashing in veins for peace...." I just love the sound of the way the words are put together, not to mention the emotion in her voice! Now that my buddy Don Rowe has weighed in, I will too. This Marcel character has gone far enough. And "far enough" is too far. (So, by extension, I suppose that almost far enough is actually not _nearly_ close enough. Anyway....) Let's run Marcel out on a rail. A *light* rail as he's easily transported and there's no sense building up a sweat. Although, now that I think of it, it's actually pretty darned *hard* to pass any light rail project here in Los Angeles County....... I'm open for suggestions but plenty miffed.
