hello Blair...yes the wonderful Mr.Gross also introduced me to FTR last
summer...so dont feel bad...even long time Joni fans like me are still learning.
For the Roses has so much meaning. It is a beauteous work and to me, it just
keeps getting better. BTW, glad you two met finally :))

  Yes Lammy, I get all teary too. Even more when I sing along with her on that
tape in particular. As I mentioned,  Brian suggested this tape for my own 'night
ride home' . When he found out I had not heard Top 12 yet, he said something
about oh...wait until you hear her piano. I know he gets such a kick out of
hearing me discover these things for myself so he didnt let on that I was in for
such an amazing treat.

For me, it was a bit of a time warp, a step back into Joni's history, this
deeply moving, haunting space inside Two Grey Rooms . Oh I know what you mean,
it does leave me speechless. I think the way she sets it up by talking about the
french language just makes the listening that much sweeter. She paints this
little drama and talks about how she has no lyrics yet and wonders how she will
come up with words which fall into the sounds she makes....then she starts that
vocalise which just sends me. Something so deeply emotional going on there.
Stirs me to the core.

This is available on the Tree....so if any of you have not heard it....well, you
know the drill.

So how many Delaware listers are there? I'm in Newark,
DE. And for some Joni content, I always liked FTR from
the get go. 'Ludwigs Tune' would be my fave pick. It
took me a long time (duh) to figure out what
'Barandgrill' was all about, and it was my least
favorite track for a long time. 'Cold Steel and Blue
Fire' is also wonderful.

and I just wanted to throw in that i LOVE this Freedy
CD, even though I think the lyrics could be a touch more
interesting...

I think it's the Blue Days/Black Nights CD?  I don't have
it in front of me...

Anyway, I loved that "I know, I got a bad reputation" song
he did a while back, but I never owned that record -- but
I find this BD/BN record to be sort of a sad-sweet mournful
cowboy kind of sound, and I really dig it.

Also, how could I not with a song called "Emily" as the
closer, with lyrics like, "Emily, you're lovely tonight"...:)

That's correct, Emily...he pulled the title from a lyric on an old Electric Light Orchestra song...

Freedy deserves a much bigger audience than he's got. I've got 3 of his discs, the one you mention + "This Perfect World" & "Never Home". His gentle tenor voice works best on his lovely ballads like "Evie's Tears", but he can rock out as well, like "One More Thing To Break"...great lyrics in that song too!

He had his 15 minutes of fame with 'Bad Reputation', but as usual he didn't fit into a pat radio format, so he's relegated to the same niche as Jonatha.

Maybe he was the street musician Joni saw when she wrote "Playin' Real Good for Free(dy)"! ;~D

You'll get no grief from me, Blair...I was late in the game coming to FTR too, but will be one of the first to say that it's nothing short of a masterpiece. In a way, it is THE key transition record of her career, encompassing where she started with guitar-oriented tunes, building on her piano-driven songs, taking her first major "bite at the hand that feeds music biz", and even introducing her foray into jazz arrangements and symphonic music.

Lyrically, she explores her relationship with her parents, with her peers, with her career and her art, and luckily for us closes with a song that not only encourages Beethoven to keep on keepin' on, but provides self-encouragement as well.

She's brave enough to take on the record industry, and confounds them by throwing in a "Fuck" on one of the more radio-friendly melodies on it, making it instantly unairable.

Thanks to the FTR fans here, I've been driven to keep digging here, and although I haven't lost good sleep, I have discovered a lot of great music!

My son was recently given a Toshiba mp3 player (MEA1 10AS) which was brought 
back to the UK for him from Japan complete with Japanese instruction manual 
and Japanese software. He is unable to transfer music to the machine and 
suspects that the software (which is designed for use with Japanese 
computers) is the problem. Does anyone know whether there is a US version of 
the "Toshiba audio manager" available for this machine and if so how we could 
obtain it?
Has anyone else got the same player??

I'm sure the song you're thinking of, Jim, was Louis Armstrong's longtime
theme, "When It's Sleepy Time Down South," written by Leon Rene, Otis Rene,
and Clarence Muse. Armstrong opened and closed his sets with it for many
years. My favorite versions can be found in The California Concerts, some
great early-'50s performances of the All Stars reissued by Decca in 1992 in
a 4-CD set.

I am taking a chance that there might be someone on the JMDL that might 
know about this topic:
I am looking for the name of the photographer who did the famous pinup shot 
of Betty Grable.  It is a black & white and might have appeared in Look or 
Life magazine in the 40's.  She is in a bathing suit with her back to the 
camera and her head turned looking towards the camera.

True, Stephen, and since I couldn't find the lyrics on the JMDL database, I'm posting them here. If you recall, she uses the same instrumental track as on "Man From Mars" just changing the lyric expressing her "joy" when the cat returns. Interestingly enough, she writes from the point of view of the cat:

If Coyote is Peter Coyote, it's news to him.  I spoke to him at length on the subject when I saw him at a book signing.  Cool dude, nevertheless.

I'm convinced that the coyote character is based primarily on Robbie Robertson.  Coyote is his Indian moniker.  And note the dark glasses reference.  He is known to have struggled with the white lines on the freeway back then, if you catch Joni's drift.

FTR was always one of my faves! I think a lot of it
depends on when you first heard it and how old you
were at the time.  I was in 1st or 2nd year university
at the time, and I played this one to death! It was my
all-time favourite for quite a while.  I don't play it
all that much anymore, but it still brings back
(mostly) good memories for me.  Sigh...

Sorry to come so late to this one.  One lyric change I'm interested to know 
if she'd done on more than one date was to "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter."  
At the November 1, 1998 show in New York she changed "The serpent fighting 
for blind desire, the eagle for clarity" to "The eagle fighting for blind 
desire, the serpent for clarity."  Our Lady of Duality strikes twice.  She 
did DJRD infrequently on that tour, so I'm curious if she made the same 
change in other venues.  The version was slightly truncated, so it's 
possible it was a flub.  Such an INTERESTING flub, though.

off to go prairie farmin'), joni played at the Berkeley Greek Theatre...i'd
seen her there before at the Mingus tribute
concert circa '79, but that's a different story...this was therefore 'academic
year, '80-'81'...i was sitting center, oh 15 rows back...joni was shining in
the sun...bananna coloured
ibenez, matching slacks, and a glowing yellow blouse...now
i'm not into minutiae when it comes to details...one song stood out, a blazing
and romantic ballad...well get ready for this...it was "You Dream Flat Tires"

...so imagine my shock when purchasing within' the next
year WTRF and it was unrecognizable, sped up and punching with fuzz
guitar...other than the huge speed up, i don't musically imagine how this
earlier version got so popped up and seemingly commercialized...but hey that's
'show biz' as they say...the earlier version could have fit in beautifully
with "Hejira" or DJRD...does anyone else know about this? I have no off the
shelf tapes...one of you will have to send me one and i'll reciprocate in some
way...also no one responded to my earlier question about who is "A Case of
You" about (remember, i'd heard rumours about Leonard Cohen)...as one who
lives like 'ludwig' i can't imagine all the
good lovers "gone through my door"; i don't think it would've made me feel any
better either...oh well, my neglected mistress 'music' is calling...

I couldn't connect to the link, but I know the photo you ask about.  Here's the skinny:

That photograph of Betty Grable was taken by one Frank Powolny in the Summer of 1941, at 20th Century Fox studios in Los Angeles.  Powolny was an Austrian immigrant (b. 1915).  

The photo was a publicity shot for the upcoming Fox movie "Sweet Rosie O'Grady" (1943).  Hollywood legend has it that during the shoot Gable suddenly struck the pose, then said to Powolny over her shoulder "how's this?"  

The rest, as they say, is history.  The pin-up of the photo was a prized posession and "morale booster" for many a GI during WWII, vaulting Gable to superstardom.  The pic was even said to be commonly found among the belongings of captured German and Japanese soldiers during WWII. 

Why do you ask?

I was listening to this night before last, and still blown away by it.  FTR
and Blue are my all-time faves.  To paraphrase Bob M.  it is the perfect
culmination of all that preceeded it, and certainly showed some of the
magic that lay ahead.

And to realise that this is 29 years old, is just amazing!  I was thinking
how when I was younger, when my parents played their "old" music, how awful
and old-fashioned it seemed to my ears.  Thankfully, my 8 year old daughter
doesn't make similar comments when I play Joni!

Haha, no it wasn't me who did Filipino Box Spring Hog, it was someone else
(so I guess I have to let my CQ go down a bit now huh? LOL). Don't think the
show was recorded...

The song I did was Rainbow Sleeves written by Tom but he's never sung it to
my knowledge. I fell in love with that song when I heard Rickie Lee Jones
sing it....one of my very favorites in the whole wide world of music. A hard
act to follow but I took the plunge anyway (did it on guitar, she does it on
piano).

Thanks for the comment on my website- all the credit for that goes to my
wonderful husband Jeff who is a designer (of many things).

Well, I was there, and that's not really how it happened.  Joni did a
separate solo set which was not connected in any way to the two
songs she did with BB King and his band during his set.  The other
song, in which she played guitar, was "Coyote".  Both were painful.
BB's band had very obviously never heard "Coyote" and flubbed
every last chord change, ruining the momentum of the song.  On
"Thrill", Joni and BB traded vocal lines, BB clumsily sang over or
played a guitar lead over most of Joni's singing.
If a tape of this ever surfaces, I feel sure it will bear this out.
Joni's solo set is a little fuzzier in my mind; I was in a state of ecstacy:
I know she did some stuff that would later appear in WTRF including
"Man to Man" and probably "Ladies Man", so I think "Flat Tires"
was likely included, too.
Joni also joined Joan Baez onstage for a version of JB's "Dida" which
was very nice.
The Bread and Roses shows of that era were 3 day events with a
stunning array of performers and MC's like Robin Williams....all
to support Mimi Farina's great organization of the same name,
whose mission has been to bring music and other performance
art to those who cannot get out-those at nursing homes, prisons,
etc.
Ms Farina has been battling cancer now for a few years-it is
sad that such a positive person is having such a hard time.

Thanks for the explanation Catherine.  He was probably most susceptible to the

This is what I lost my Robin to almost 3 years ago.  I think this may be
quietly as wide spread as AIDS, but it does not have to be deadly.

Finally, I agree with Wally & Debra's explanation about the men in "Coyote"
and "Refuge of the Roads." The more I thought about it the more I saw the
lines of distinction - one is definitely of the "flesh" and one of the "soul."
This does not mean folks can't be of both, but these two are at opposite ends
of the spectrum.

OOPS - Rev. Vince!  Still asking around for the White Sox game Sunday.  I am
hooked into practice with my team this weekend - sorry!  I will talk to you
soon.

Glad things are back to normal here - for us.  Glad to be back - Again!  I

Hmm.  My name is raymond and I have been away form the list for a long time 
but i came back the other day because I'm going to new orleans around

"Coyote." Soonafter his friend's name bobbed up--or was dropped--it was Sam 
Shepard!  

So, according to the masseuse at the spa in Sonoma (which spa I cannot say: 
this was about three years ago), Coyote is SS.  

I don't know though--who knows?  I don't know Joni's history that well--or 
Sam Shepard's...but I do remember an entry/paragraph in Sam's journal which 
was published after Rolling Thunder where he talks about Joni and her 
performance/music/writing.  It sounds a bit objective--appreciative but 
distant.  Not so intimate.  And wasn't she performing "Coyote" on that tour?  
Well, maybe they hooked up and she wrote the song and then started playing it 
because she thought it rocked so much--which it certainly did!

Another thing: I have moved back to New York City and now live in the East 
Village.  There is a bar/bistro/restaurant near my apartment called Rue B, 
and it is very cool.  Cozy little space with a nice menu (food isn't as good 
as it sounds though I am sad to report) and beer/aperitif selection.  Cork on 
the walls, banquettes salvaged from the Stanhope at some point when there 
were renovations up there...it's nice.  Also has a jazz combo that plays some 
nights.

On the walls there is a rotating and varied selection of art and one 
day--actually it was New Year's Eve Day (2000)--as I was sitting and eating 
with friends I looked up and said "That looks so much like a Joni" (to 
myself...as, I'm afraid, one of my friends has quite the aversion to her).  
Later, after we ate, I asked our handsome, silver-haired waiter and he told 
me, "Yes, it is a Joni Mitchell.  "So and so," (I can't remember the guy's 
name) "used to live in Los Angeles and he owned a place in West Hollywood 
and..." 

I forget the rest!

But the silver haired waiter said that "so and so" would be thrilled that i 
had recognized it as a Joni (it's a kind of cubist thing--very sunny southern 
california with intersecting panels all on the same picture plane--one i 
remember shows a woman in a bikini swimming and another a man a baby, also 
swimming) because he loves Joni so much.  And, the waiter said, he has a 
"stack" of Joni lithos down in the basement.  The other day I passed Rue B 
again and peeked in--I pass it all the time but don't always stop in--and 
there it was, still up there, warming the cockles of my heart.  The other art 
had changed, but not that!  

Go joni and So and So!

And any JMDLer who happens to be around there--Rue B is on B at about 
11th...should stop in and check it out.  Also ask somebody about it because 
apparently the guy who owns the place (Mr. So and So) would be thrilled to 
talk about Joni and his collection.  That's what the nice, handsome, 
silver-haired waiter told me.

Well, I disagree, philip.  Obviously the song is very allegorical.  If this Coyote person embodied all the characteristics called for in the lyrics, he would have to actually be one of the four-legged carnivores. My contention is that it might be somewhat *based* on Robertson and perhaps others, the first lines notwithstanding.  I only used a smidgen of my boundless imagination to arrive at the conclusion, too.  There's the "hawk" reference, the fact that Robbie is Canadian and was raised in part on reservation, and other clues.

You hate the song?  No tune?!  Again we differ wildly.  It's one of my favorites and one I always use to initiate new Joni recruits.  To each his or her own, I suppose.

remember well joni being so shy to get up on the stage for b.b's "thrill is
gone"...he practically had to beg her and drag her out there himself...i was
wowed by her
shyness...at times she has shown such humility which belies the few
journalists who have labelled her as 'big ego'....but they often say this
when she lists herself with beethoven, van gogh, or mozart....so
what?...she's actually just trying to get across something in the context of
what inspires her...its really absence of ego to do this because she knows
that we're all just human beings in need of graceful inspiration....in that
sense there is no 'beethoven',
'van gogh' or 'mozart' since their egos were not the creators of what they
received....but chic magazine writers don't get it...
  yes joni and b.b. were a neat couple...they seemed to genuinely like each
other...and joni seems so belonging to
black american musical environments...hard to describe but she comes alive
in jazz terms when she's with such people or settings...
 i'm glad you liked WTRF , Bob...i liked her arrangement of 'Chinese Cafe'
turning into 'Unchained Melody', "ladies man', 'moon at the window, 'be
cool', 'man to man'...i think it was haunting too at the concert, and
'love', which was related to the film about love that liv ullman was working
