Tonite I had the privledge of seeing fellow JMDLers Kate and CJ perform here in Delaware. They performed very well. There was a great warmth and companionship to their music. They performed originals, added some humor into their act and performed many a great songs. Did great versions of King's "It's too Late", Gershwin's "Summertime", Indigo Girls' "Joking" "least Complicated" "Galileo" and "Closer to Fine". ANd then they performed the 'Master's' own "You turn me On I'm a Radio" and "Big Yellow Taxi." They put their own touches on the songs which turned out to be a very fun experience for all. They closed with a touching "Circle Song" by Harry Chapin. Also, months ago I had privately emailed them requesting them to play something from Hejira. Well, they didnt get to play anything from it, but the biggest treat for me was after the show ended CJ showed me her alternate acoustic guitar which she had tuned especially for Coyote. Together she and I sang the first verse of the song to each other's delight. Good luck working on the rest of the song CJ and thanks for the great night the both of you. Sincerely, Blair m. Eventually this fine rendition will come to light. Anyway, during Ken Burns' epic documentary "Jazz", there was an old jazz song that was very close to this line. I don't have my notes handy but it was very close. Anyone know it? David Lahm? Simon? Fred Simon? I know, I know, A long time Coming. But, last week when I was fortunate to meet the wonderful Mr. Gross at a school function here at the University of Delaware. We happened to discuss Mrs. Mitchell and I confessed that FTR was the hardest for me to open myself up to. WEll, tonite, it just hit me, and now I am hooked. I feel like Frank Sinatra, "that Mithcell sure has some good hits, she sure is great," realizing the beauty of things way after I should have. Also, I thus revoke my choice of "COld blue steel and Sweet Fire" as one of my choices from the "Least Favorite Joni Song" thread that was about 2 months ago. Well, everyone. carrry on. :) love blair _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 20:22:22 -0700 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: Painting with words and music Hi Mags, Those os us who were there raved onlist for a long time afterward. I recall that we couldn't post to the list right away because we were in such a state! ;-) Current JMDL'ers and former JMDL'ers who were there include Les, Wally Breese, Phyliss, Steve Dulson, Don Sloan, Mariana McConnell, Leslie and Steve Mixon, Pearl, Jill Tamada (Clark's sister), Ken Corral, Marsha Doyle, Catherine Turley, Shari and I hope I'm not forgetting others. Some people are more prominent in the film than others. You can constantly see Wally and sometimes Don behind Joni, and there are quite a few shots of Dulson and Jill. Phyliss, Pearl and I were sitting right in front of Joni (good view but we are seldom identifiable). I sat next to Donald Freed one night and can be seen briefly next to him and the camera does a close-up on him. To me, the actual room we were in was smaller than it appears on the film, so we really up close and totally blown away. I've been promising for two years to do a "locater" of where and when JMDL'ers appear - hopefully some day I'll sit still enough to accomplish it! Some of us were there the first or second night of the taping and some were there both nights. Some of us were invited to meet Joni after the first night and we are still pinching ourselves! NJC Brian, Welcome to the JMDL. You said, > The only live Joni I have > is the two tracks off the Isle of Wight DVD and the Painting With Words And > Music DVD. I prefer the 1970 performance, so I'd like to be able to hear/see > Joni of old. Well, there's the CD called "Miles Of Aisles" from the 70s. You need to get this, Brian, to understand the perennial request "Nobody ever said to van Gogh, 'Paint __A Starry Night__ again, maaaaan!' " To witness a spectacular version of "Amelia", you must own "Shadows and Light" (1980). It's remarkable and I prefer it to PwW&M. The soundtrack is available on CD but the VHS is hard to find and there's no DVD yet. Joni crafted TONS of excellent studio albums in the 70s. See the lyrics page of www.jmdl.com for pictures of the albums along with the song titles. Or try www.jonimitchell.com/jonidiscography.html to see the years issued. Here they are the non-jazz flavored titles: Ladies of the Canyon 70 Blue 71 For The Roses 72 Court and Spark 74 Miles of Aisles (live and mentioned above) 74 All of these are in print and widely available. This should keep you busy for awhile. Happy hunting. In an interview, Joni was talking about an early version in which she had (roughly), "Sometimes change comes at you like a broadside accident. Maybe you ding a fender. You can pound out the dents." Obviously, the lyric changed before the studio track was finalized so maybe it's a bad example. It does show that the lyrics reveal themselves through time though. I guess she paints over what doesn't quite work yet. We are so lucky that we _get_ it. np: More Jazz Takes just finished: the Atty May set of JoniFest 2000 in New England. Fun stuff! Jim - --- Bob Muller said, - - -Her re-voicing of Furry from "Old Furry's got nobody" to the longer blues verse she sings in live recordings. And the list goes on...it's the reason why I enjoy hearing so many live appearances! Sometimes there's constancy, and sometimes there's change... Where Patrick Swayze is this guy who can't express his feelings? Your post made me think of that character. Mags said, >Yesterday, i heard Joni's top 12 for the first >time...and got all teary when she >started to play the opening chords of >Two Grey Rooms...such a gorgeous soulful >song.... .that was before Two Grey Rooms >became what it is on Night Ride Home. To >listen, to hear, to learn how she 'felt' >that song to completion is so moving. That story, that track, "Speechless" got me big time. To hear her talk about her feelings, her vulnerability, her search to deliver that song. And then she plays the track and it's..... oh God! She *MADE* IT! She finished it! I *know* what this became! It's so very, very *inside* somehow that it just chokes me up. It literally chokes me up. Yeah Mags. What *you* said. "Ditto." On the night of my Senior prom I went to a screening of Rock and Roll High School and to dinner at McDonalds. I still think I had a beter time than anyone at the prom! When I was 18 I permanently damaged hearing in my right ear at a Ramones concert when pogoing concert goers inadvertantly pinned me against an amplifier for about 20 min. Nearly 20 years later and the right ear still 'crackles' whenever I'm really tired. I also remember Dee Dee Ramone stepping on my fingers at the same show... When I called my sister and told her the news about Joey, she said that she felt like part of her youth had died with him. I kind of feel a bit of the same. Thanks, Joey, for helping to make me the town freak!
