RE: IMO there are a great many suits suitable for Emperors being run up in the lofts and workshops of our capital cities - for my money (not that I will be parting with it), this would include practically anything that is described as "conceptual". Lots of postings on the nature of art lately that I'm finding really interesting. Edward's comments on conceptual art (hi edward, welcome.) made me think of something: Conceptual art (actually much of contemporary art) needs a basic working knowledge of western art history in order to be understood fully. Think of John Cage. One can listen to his music and find it enjoyable, but to gain a full appreciation of it you need to know what has come before. The radical approaches and deconstructionist impulses would not be seen as nearly so unusual had the listener not been familiar with what was being revolted against. Same with visual art. Conceptual art, with it's lack of reliance on an art object, materials, craft, etc. and it's emphasis on ideas owes a great deal to how art had been concieved up to that point. It is in part a reaction to art as commodity and art as object. Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Wally, You're buying American curios like Slinkies from a place in the Hamptons? I'll make you a deal. I will beat any price on Slinkies by... oh, 10% and throw in shipping for free. Deal? Would you like some electronic snapshots from the local "antique mall" where they sell stuff like that? They have TONS and I could really use the money! Only half kidding, Lama ** well, there is the place in the hamptons where i usually buy all these tchotchkes [stephen epstein: what is this place called? you know, the place where i bought my slinky and the bicycle thing] and they have all these gadgets and stuff that are not only useful but also beautiful in a very artistic way. but then, what do i know? i collect heinz jars... wallyK, who finds beauty in almost everything and art in almost anything. ** ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2001 02:24:07 -0400 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Offensive Posts! NJC Wally K said, > well, i don't want to tell on anyone, but mr stephen epstein was corrected > by a beautiful canadian lady when he said ''crocuses''. i thought it was > very improper of her, of course. Mercy sakes! I'm offended that a Canadian woman would correct someone for using the word "crocuses"! I'm offended that Wally would deem it necessary to correct her! Previously I was offended that Colin corrected Bob for suggesting that JT rewrite "Dad Loves His Work" as "Dad Loves His Prunes". In spite of this fact, I reserve the possiblity that I may concurrently be offended by Bob's assertion. Naturally, I was shocked by Catherine's use of a crude word for "flatulance". Any right-thinking person WOULD be. I'm offended that Mark gave away his photocopied TTT songbook. Isn't it.... contraband? I'm offended that Les allows the List to be used to distribute illicit materials. I'm offended that smoe allows lists like this one to have free, unfetter*d use of its b*ndwidth. I'm offended by the words unfettere*d and b*ndwidth. They're not *nice* words. Before that, I was offended by the word "b*ng" in Ian's post. It's also offensive that Ian's wife gave him a b*ng for Christmas. Furthermore, I was offended that Ian uses the vile object, but I didn't post about it...... I was buffering my offenses! I think I'm having a case of the vapours again. Maybe if I sit on the porch swing and have a nice sip of lemonade. Yes, that's much better..... "A defector from the petty wars that shell shock love away." Tolerance, tolerance, tolerance, James Albert L'Hommedieu ps- Here in Cincinnati, we're offended that the police force has shot to death black men with alarming regularity and apparent casualness for more than a decade. Kinda makes all this seem "like a tempest in a teapot. All sound and fury, signifying nothing." (I once heard Jerry Springer say that. Isn't he cool?) Yes Virginia, this entire, ridiculous post was written with tongue in cheek. (Sorry for naming body parts like that. But gee whiz! By golly! Well! A fella can only stand SO much!) Love you guys anyway.
