------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2001 03:07:21 -0700 From: Robert Holliston Subject: Re: art:useful? Yes, yes, I say. As the proud possessor of a genuine hand-painted-by-Kakki martini glass, I have to say that it is both a work of art and a useful addition to my kitchen (even if I only use it on very special occasions). It has a STAS motif and I will always cherish it. As for what constitutes popular rather than high art, I have to offer only this: only a few centuries ago, composers such as Vivaldi, Handel, Mozart and Rossini were compelled to write new works as fast as they could, because the public simply wasn't interested in last week's music. Even the composers had no expectation that their work would have a life beyong the season during which it was first heard. Today, of course, many people regard the works of these and other composers not only as classics but as standard bearers. So, who's to know? What is considered ephemeral in one century may well become a classic in a subsequent one. The main thing is to enjoy, keep an open mind about, and learn from the exposure to whatever art we're privileged enough to encounter. Love it or hate it, it's there to provoke feelings and, if you're lucky, discussion. Not a very intellectual contribution, alas, but I send my very best wishes to everybody by way of compensation ;-) Roberto np Mahler Das Lied von der Erde Kakki wrote: > A hand-painted martini glass. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2001 07:14:32 EDT From: AzeemAK@aol.com Subject: "The Bjork Incident" and related stuff (njc, not very long or provocative) Marcel, Your exhaustive post to the list lets us all know where you stand; however, it leaves some of the central issues un-answered, as well as containing a lot of red herrings and sly little digs of the sort you decry other people for using (one example that sticks out is "these are not ordinary people"). I could, of course, reply off list, as is your preferred way; however, I prefer in such situations to reply to the list, as it is - quite clearly - a hot topic of interest to a lot of people. As you obliquely mentioned me in your letter (I was the one who said "it made my blood boil"), I would like to re-iterate some of the points I made to you privately, to which you have not responded. I am going to copy parts of my reply to you here, so that people can see the kind of "vitriol" that people send you. I do realise that other people may have posted more confrontational stuff to you privately, but I can only speak for myself. So that my reponses to you are in context and make sense, I have left in some of the snippets of your second post to me, on the basis that (a) there is nothing inflamatory in either your post or mine, and (b) most of what you said to me is revisited in your longer post to the list. I hope you will not regard this as a breach of confidence. A: "The first thing to say is that I did NOT attack you personally. I said that the list you posted was objectionable, and I made a point to phrase it that way. I didn't know whether you had made it up yourself anyway, and I would have had just as strong a reaction whoever had posted it. Having said that, I'm not going to be disingenuous and say I can't see why you felt I was attacking you - I can see why that is. I acknowledge that I could have been even clearer that I wasn't making an ad hominem attack; I thought at the time I was clear enough, but obviously I wasn't. M wrote: << Please keep in mind one thing. Supposedly everyone is entitled to express their thoughts without restriction. >> A: Yes they are, and the corollary of that is that others are allowed to respond without restriction. You may have thought I was paying lip service to free speech when I said that anyone is entitled to post whatever they like, but I wasn't. However, if someone posts something that others object to, then s/he has to accept that others are equally free to say "hang on a sec, that isn't OK with me", or "you're talking bollocks" or "you smell", or whatever. That's the gift and the drawback of an unmoderated list. I cannot on the one hand say that I have the right to say what I like, and on the other cry foul if I cop some flak for it. M: << Ive been on the list for over four years. I can not tell you (but maybe you suspect) how many things people have said that I vehemently disagreed with. >> A: I'm sure that is so, and I'm also pretty damn sure that the same goes for all of us. Who knows why we let nine things go and then feel impelled to respond to the tenth? Just for the record, I have "voiced" my strong disagreement with a number of people on list over the years, I can think of at least 4 off the top of my head. M: << For whatever reason Im a lightening rod. And why ? In this case I post an absolutely satiricle post and about ten people are acting like I pushed puppy dogs into a meatgrinder and served hamburgers. Im sorry but methink they protesteth too much. >> Come on Marcel! Does it not occur to you that you might actually bear at least some of the reponsibility for this? Aren't you being a tad disingenuous here? I stand by my objections to that list about Bjork - its sentiments were just nasty, and for what it's worth, I don't see anything satirical or funny about it - unlike plenty of the things you've posted in the past, such as the mock list of your "dark secrets". I'm not saying we all have to be fluffy-bunnies and love each other all the time; what I am saying is that list about Bjork touched a nerve with me, and with quite a number of other people on the list, and there may be more to it than "let's bash Marcel just for the hell of it." Put it this way, if I were to write to the list and say "Jonatha Brooke is rubbish, and the only reason she's got any success is the number of cocks she's sucked", I'd expect a few people to raise an objection. And if I then said "oh come on, I was only joking", not everyone would see that as making it alright. I look to post to the list, and ask myself "can I say what I want to say to this person and feel OK about other people seeing what I've said?" If not, I change it. It happened recently with a reply to something another lister said to someone. I re-read my reply before sending it, and discovered it was chock-full of sarcasm (which I realised was just a way of getting at him without seeming to), so I just got rid of some of it." So, that was my reply - all civilised stuff, right? I would not have the temerity to castigate you for not replying; what I would be interested to hear is your response to questions like: 1) Do you not agree that it is disrespectful to continue posting privately to people when they have SPECIFICALLY and REPEATEDLY asked you not to? 2) Do you not take any responsibility for what you post? You seem to think that you can post what you like and that if someone objects to it then they are attacking you. You also seem to think that as long as you don't use swear words, nothing you say could be offensive. I don't think it works that way. 3) Are you so sure that the reason you cop some flak is because you're a Republican? I don't think it is, I think there is a flawed logic at work: "I am a Republican. I get flak and feel attacked on the list. Therefore I get flak because I am a Republican." Have you, again, considered that the reason you are often the epicentre of flame wars is not because of how you vote, or who you are, but simply because of what you post? 4) On the one hand, you say that the vast majority of correspondence you get is positive and supportive; on the other hand, you object to being ganged up on by "them", and suddenly become the lone voice of justice, taking arms against a sea of oppressors, politically correct milksops, the "thought police", whoever. I'm not sure these two positions are consistent one with the other, are you? Finally, I would like to tell everyone on the list (because I imagine some people will not realise this) that you are as capable as anyone of having a civilised debate on contentious subjects, and of conceding a point well made; for example our debate about Marx, Freud, the spread of privatisation, etc etc. That is not the spirit in which you have approached the current debate, where you are simply ignoring other people's legitimate concerns, and getting rather carried away with a "me right, everyone else wrong" stance. She went into the woods to look for it and found a frog in a trap. The frog said to her, "If you release me from this trap, I will grant you 3 wishes." The woman freed the frog and the frog said, "Thank you, but I failed to mention that there was a condition to your wishes that whatever you wish for, your husband will get 10 times more or better!" The woman said, "That would be okay," and for her first wish she wanted to be the most beautiful woman in the world. The frog warned her, "You do realize that this wish will also make your husband the most handsome man in the world, an Adonis, that women will flock to." The woman replied, "That will be okay because I will be the most beautiful woman and he will only have eyes for me." So, KAZAM - she's the most beautiful woman in the world! For her second wish, she wanted to be the richest woman in the world. The frog said, "That will make your husband the richest man in the world and he will be ten times richer than you." The woman said, "That will be okay because what's mine is his and what's his is mine." So, KAZAM - she's the richest woman in the world! Then the frog inquired about her third wish and she answered, "I'd like a mild heart attack." Moral of the story: Women are clever bitches. Thanks for the post, Jason. My daughter and I seem to have found common ground on Dido. Sarah has just turned 14 and usually listens to dance-type music. But the other day, she asked me if I liked Dido, and I told her that I liked what I had heard so far, and that many people that I knew were saying good things about her. Sarah told me she likes Dido too and wants to get the CD. Things are looking good on the mother/daughter front (not that we've had any major disagreements about anything. Yet.) It was so windy, one of our downspouts got detached from the wall of the house and was blowing and banging around like crazy. There's a fish and chips restaurant close to where I live and I took the kids there for dinner last night, being too lazy too cook, and because it's the beginning of a looooonng weekend, and the weather was beautiful last night. In addition to making the best fish and chips anywhere (IMO!) they also have an amazing collection of teapots! I'm sure none are as old as the ones at the Columbia Museum, but there are some amazing pieces - at times, the line between art and kitsch becomes quite blurred, especially when it comes to oddball teapots, but I find them quite amusing and interesting (although most of them don't seem to be very useful!) After all, Women DO matter everywhere. The world is getting smaller and this should be a global concern. All the best, Simone _______________________________________________ Hope you can forward this as instructed. Subject: Petition If you decide not to forward this, please send it back to me. I know this is too true and so dreadful. Oprah actually featured a show about this atrocity. This is an actual petition, and "signatures" will be lost if you drop the line. Please take 3 minutes out of your life to do your part. Madhu, the government of Afghanistan, is waging a war upon women. Since theTaliban took power in 1996, women have had to wear burqua and have been beaten and stoned in public for not having the proper attire, even if this means simply not having the mesh covering in front of their eyes. One woman was beaten to death by an angry mob of fundamentalists for accidentally exposing her arm(!) while she was driving. Another was stoned to death for trying to leave the country with a man that was not a relative. Women are not allowed to work or even go out in public without a male relative; professional women such as professors, translators, doctors, lawyers, artists and writers have been forced from their jobs and restricted to their homes. Homes where a woman is present must have their windows painted so that she can never be seen by outsiders. They must wear silent shoes so that they are never heard. Women live in fear of their lives for the slightest misbehavior. Because they cannot work, those without male relatives or husbands are either starving to death or begging the street, even if they hold Ph.D.s. Depression is becoming so widespread that it has reached emergency levels. There is no way in such an extreme Islamic society to know the suicide rate with certainty, but relief workers are estimating that the suicide rate among women must be extraordinarily high: those who cannot find proper medication and treatment for severe depression and would rather take their lives than live in such conditions. At one of the rare hospitals for women, a reporter found still, nearly lifeless bodies lying motionless on top of beds, wrapped in their burqua, unwilling to speak, eat, or do anything, but slowly wasting away. Others have gone mad and were seen crouched in corners, perpetually rocking or crying, most of them in fear. When what little medication that is left finally runs out, one doctor is considering leaving these women in front of the president's residence as a form of protest. It is at the point where the term "human rights violations" has become an understatement. Husbands have the power of life and death over their women relatives, especially their wives, but an angry mob has just as much right to stone or beat a woman, often to death, for exposing an inch of flesh or offending them in the slightest way. Women enjoyed relative freedom to work, to dress generally as they wanted, and to drive and appear in public alone until only 1996. The rapidity of this transition is the main reason for the depression and suicide; Women who were once educators or doctors or simply used to basic human freedoms are now severely restricted and treated as subhuman in the name of right-wing fundamentalist Islam. It is not their tradition or 'culture,' but it is alien to them, and it is extreme even for those cultures where fundamentalism is the rule. Everyone has a right to a tolerable human existence, even if they are women in a Muslim country. If we can threaten military force in Kosovo the name of human rights for the sake of ethnic Albanians, citizens of the world can certainly express peaceful outrage at the oppression, murder and injustice committed against women by the Taliban. STATEMENT: In signing this, we agree that the current treatment of women in Afghanistan is completely UNACCEPTABLE and deserves action by the United Nations and that the current situation overseas will not be tolerated. Women's Rights is not a small issue anywhere, and it is UNACCEPTABLE for women in 2001 to be treated as subhuman and as so much property. Equality and human decency is a fundamental RIGHT, not a freedom to be granted, whether one lives in Afghanistan or elsewhere. 1) Giuliana D.
