This is stems from the fact that most lists I'm on are work related, and form a great local archive of collected and searchable knowledge. I also have a huge great big shouty computer with huge disks, loads of memory and a silly processor in it. So I'm swapping files around last night to try and optimise Outlook's performance, given that there's several hundred megabytes of mailing list material in total. Now... here's the stunning bit. Since I joined the JMDL on Feb 19th 1999, I have accrued just over 200 megabytes of Joni list e-mail. That's an awful lot of e-mail, kids :) It might be that this figure would normally be larger, because Outlook at least attempts to squish its folder sizes down, given that text compresses very well. But, you know, whatever. I just think it's a deeply impressive number. 200,000,000 characters, less some e-mail headers and stuff like that, so probably well over 100 million keystrokes representing the collected wisdom, spats, love, laughter, warmth, tears, and general loveliness of JMDL subscribers. Well done. Keep it up. Cheers! - --Chris ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Apr 2001 06:46:07 -0500 From: mags Subject: Re: april 10th!!!!!! njc! My favorite saying: Life is made up of hills and valleys. We just happen to be in a valley. All the discussions on muscic-all genres is just amazing. The knowledge and friendships everyone shares is also, amazing. Someone said about 600 people being in a room and different personalities...this is why I joined. Now, the real reason I'm writing, today, is to ask a music question. (for those of you who have stuck with me) What can anyone tell me about the "Meat Puppets"? Specifically, what songs did they do on "Unplugged"? One more thing to verify the greatness of this list. The generosity of the members to educate those of us who are not as knowledgeable is unbelievable. On the way back to Albany, the reviewer said he didn't care for the show and was planning to say as much in print. I encouraged him to rethink his experience as to pan the show would: A. But it does include Big Yellow Taxi and Just Like This Train which were the opening numbers, and Jaco's solo, which for me is one of the highlights of the tour, with Jaco going off into space and always using Hendrix's "Third Stone From The Sun" to bring himself back to earth. It also includes "The Last Time I Saw Richard" (on piano) which was one of the traditional encore numbers she did on the tour. The audience of course goes nuts when she starts singing. The fighting that has been going on does not belong here. It doesn't matter who started it or who contributed, or whether it was intentional or an accident. None of that matters. Continuing to drag these things out only prolongs this negativity and adds to the fire. Let's just stop it period. There doesn't have to be rule about posting. Let's just decide to make this a loving respectful community. Just swallow your pride and laugh at yourself for a moment. Really! Try it! I lurk in other lives from the studio here, in retreat from the disjointed absurdity of social discourse and when I check in each morning somebody's always slamming outa the house and here I sit wondering what the fuck that was all about. I'm beginning to think white people are just too sensitive. Oh, just joking about that white people thing - but if I start a dogfight at least I'll know what started it. I don't understand all the flare-ups. Marcel's recent joke about Bjork ignited things again. It seems that everyone's opinion is clashing with everyone else's opinion. When Emily criticized Marcel, I tried to defend him. I didn't justify what he said, but I did criticize the words Emily used. Both Emily and I came to peace very quickly -- one private round of e-mails and we both ended up thanking each other for our individual insights. This "discussion list" is an opportunity for people to discuss their views on Joni Mitchell's music and art, plus related performers or topics of interest. Our opinions on artists and musicians vary greatly. We're, in essence, sharing our personal likes and dislikes about different performers, different musical products, different styles, etc. Music evokes emotion, so discussion of music is going to be emotional. As writers, we can use the many tools at our disposal -- flattery, sarcasm, slang, jokes, digs, parodies, and all. That's part of the fun, I think. My posts on these matters have been fairly consistent -- I think we should be free to say what we want to say. If we occasionally offend, well then, we'll face the flack from it. And, as we expose our feelings and hear the feelings of others, that's how we open our minds. I consider myself to be a fair and thoughtful person. I speak out with a sharp tongue sometimes, when something really riles me. But, trust me, I give my posts a lot of thought and I try to word them so they evoke thought, challenge or persuade. It has never been my intention to inflame anyone. Challenge in a mature fashion, yes, but inflame, no. It doesn't work for me any more. Perhaps my writing style doesn't mesh, because I seem to get attacked no matter how fair or careful I am about what I say. I've often said that people who gravitate around a particularly outspoken artist, such as Joni, would naturally be outspoken and have strong opinions. Although I respect Alison E in New York, and I've liked some of her posts, her most recent words surrounding her reaction to Marcel's joke really struck me: > and if someone wants to criticize me for that, then > step the fuck up. i'm a FEMINIST GODAMMIT then later... > to quote my lovely ani, "everytime i say something > they find hard to hear, they chalk it up to my anger, > and never to their own, fear...." Alison spouts off incredibly aggressive words, then follows it up with such a quote from Ani DeFranco that says it's the listener's "fear" that makes the words hard to hear. My first reaction was, "Bullshit. Yuck. I don't need to waste my time even trying to figure out nonsensical garbage like this." Then it dawned on me. Alison's incredibly incongruent statements unwittingly turned on the light bulb in my brain. Michael Paz posted his feelings about how some of the bullshit (BS) is mucking up the discussion list. I immediately felt embarrassed to think that my posts were part of the bullshit. When I "stepped up" to defend Marcel, I knew he was joking and that was my whole point. I entered the "discussion" because I thought I had a point of view that was germane to the situation. It dawned on me that I don't truly understand what this discussion list is all about. It certainly isn't ALL about Joni Mitchell or we wouldn't even need conventions such as NJC in the subject line. So, rather than add any more bullshit to the discussion list, I am taking a break for a while. It's probably easier for me to unsubscribe, because if I lurked I would once again be tempted to defend the Marcels of the world. And obviously, some people don't care to hear my opinions about the Marcels of the world. I'm very busy as it is -- I'm juggling several important writing contracts, my piano studio is growing, and wedding season is coming up. The first song from her > repertoire is, oh I don't know, let's say, Coyote. ... and then she sits down at the piano and says "these are some things I'm working on" and plays through her works in progess, stumbling a little maybe, giggling, singing the lyrics she's figured out, redoing passages, pausing to think, and then going with what she has so far from beginning to end, one song at at time, with maybe a bass player adding to the sound, while we all hold our breath so we don't miss anything. And after a while she eases into Paprika Plains and other musicians join in one by one, and we're all back into familiar territory. Hanging out during the chaos of creating can be exhilerating and anxiety-provoking too, so Paprika Plains sounds "updated" but it's still an old friend. Aaahhhh. And then she picks up her guitar and plays a few more of her new songs, ones none of us have heard before, and these are a little more polished than the piano tunes. Wow! And then for old times sake I'd love to hear her do Amelia, in a spare way, just her guitar and a bass. That would be one amazing concert! My assumption is that your message to me was another of those. As I thought it was going to the entire list, I saw no problem with quoting it. I have no way of telling if something you send to me is not going to the entire list. I was following your past precedent. The rest of your message is so insulting and full of anger that I won't comment on it save one small thing: The comment about Sutcliffe and necrophelia was supposed to be a JOKE. I thought I had made that clear. I was trying to ward off the inevitable stroke heading your way by lightening things up a bit. Now that I see it's backfired I suggest yoga, or barring that, a couple shots of good tequila to help you deal with your anger. If I sent something to the Joni group that you did not want others to see, then I apologise. A small mistake does not make me an imbecile, stupid, or self-centered, as your message claims. I would suggest that filling ones self full of pure hatred or someone they have never met DOES." _______________________ OK, enough of that ugliness. On a somewhat related message, I replied to Paul I's message to me which he also posted to the list (see-he posted both to ME and THE LIST! Yes. Yoko also had an lp from the same time with the title Yoko Ono-Plastic Ono Band. Nearly identical cover to Johns record. Yoko's lp Fly from 1971 uses the same typeface and has a very similar cover to John's Imagine lp. I think this was all by design-they wanted to release 'mirror' or 'twin' records. It only lasted through those two sets of releases, though. They joined up after that on 'Sometime in NYC'. Needless to say, Yoko's Plastic Ono Band is very different from John's. Some interesting musicians on it-Lennon, Ringo, Ornette Coleman, Charlie Haden, etc. It's a good one. Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Santa Bob just delivered the Joni Covers CD for my "Sweet 16th" LOL This is one of my favorite covers to date, and I have ALL of them. Bob's summary of the tracks were extremely accurate, but I'll add my 2cents to some of the tracks. Hoyt Axton, "He Played Real Good For Free" I happen to be a country music fan (please don't throw me off the list :~), and Hoyt did a great job with this song. The P.D.U.S.M., "Urge For Going" LOL on this one Bob, you were so right about this 60's girls group. It does sound like they're about to sing "Leader of the Pack" Lisa Yves, "The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines" Lisa Yves, "Twisted" Lisa does a great job on both of these songs. I've only heard them both done better by our own birthday fairy Wally K.. I still can't believe the instrumentals are all done by kids under 14. Quite talented. Lydia van Dam, "Black Crow" As in her previous covers of Joni songs, Lydia does a magnificent job. I would love to have an entire CD of Lydia's Joni covers. She rules!!! Michael Ball, "River" I've never heard of Michael Ball, but he's got a great voice and does a superb job of "River" O.C. Smith, "Just Couldn't Help Myself" Well, if Joni co-wrote this song, I'd say she was doing some writing for "The Love Boat" and "Love American Style" too :~) Singers Unlimited - "Chelsea Morning" I really liked this Manhattan Transfer style version of the song, and I'd love to be one of the Patrick Leader dancers too! P.M. Dawn, "Night In The City" EXCELLENT!!! Quite different way of performing one of my favorite Joni tunes. I just want to thank all the contributors to the CD, and always a special thanks to my good friend Bob Muller. You're the best!
