My mother used to lock herself in the bathroom with a coffee, her cigarettes and a crossword puzzle and she wouldn't come out for at least an hour. The lock on our bathroom door doesn't work very well, so if I try to lock myself in to get some peace and quiet, invariably one of the kids pushes hard enough to open the door. It seems Mum isn't allowed any QUIET TIME. As a result, I sometimes go for drives JUST so I can listen to the music that I like and not hear anyone's voice nagging me for this or that, or complaining that brother or sister is bugging them. At times like that, I won't allow the kids to come with me because, in addition to clamoring for STUFF and fighting with each other, they're going to make snide comments about the weird music I listen to, and will want to play their popstars-type CDs or listen to CISS-FM (which is Toronto's "popstars-type" radio station, featuring a lot of NSync, Brittney Spears and more than the necessary quota of drum-synth loops, which gets my nervous system all twitchy and makes me want to kill someone, but I digress). I have also been known to sing in the car (but never when I have any passengers with me!) It must look really weird to other drivers, but I don't care. "FTR" is one of Joni's strangest and least accessible albums (in my opinion)..........possibly because it bridges the gap between two completely different albums, "Blue, C&S".........After starting off with "Blue" and "C&S", I jumped radically to "Hissing" and found it surprisingly accessible..........Then I quickly bought the rest of her 70's catalog.............and out of all the albums, "FTR" and "Don Juan" were the two that took the longest to grow on me......."Cold Blue Steel" was one of the few tracks that stood out, and it took quite awhile for me to anjoy the album...........Now I love it................I was just surprised that an album from her "folk" period took so long for me to get into................ :) PHIL ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Apr 2001 17:53:45 -0400 From: Vince Lavieri Subject: Re: NJC catman wrote: > NEW STATE SLOGANS.... > Illinois: Please Don't Pronounce the "S" This is my native state and how it grinds me when someone says Ill-i-noise > Michigan: First Line Of Defense From The Canadians And this is my state of choice and all I can say is that after we took care of the Canadians in the War of 1812, America hasn't been attacked by them since -- when was the last time any American here was attacked by a Canadian -- so we have done a good job! I found her in front of the L section with David Lahm staring at me, Saying "Brian if you don't buy this CD you won't find perfect bliss listening to me play FTR on my piano today." I was on the list for a short time in 2000, but with a very busy schedule, I dropped off the list, as my wife kept asking why I was still getting the digest if I wasn't even reading it. I'm still just as busy, and will probably drop off again and return another day, as I have to leave the country for work, and don't have time to check or even delete unread mail for several days at a time. I always answer work and family messages...but let JMDL go quite often. As to why JM kept the name Mitchell, the only insight I can offer dovetails what Hell (nice handle) wrote. She married in the mid-60's, was not a feminist, was an independent artist with a following of her own, the artistic people she admired and followed and who followed her career knew her as JM. Those who knew her family knew her actual names. Lastly, the name Joni Mitchell has broad assonance, and a percussive sound that goes well with the percussive sounds of English, rock 'n' roll and jazz. Only she knows why she kept the name...maybe she really liked the guy, and kept his name...just because...I know many divorcees who keep all their last names. As I reread the last paragraph, my juvenile mind is ready to giggle over her "broad assonance." I also sometimes wonder whether the title "urge for going" has new significance for JM and her fans, as we creep up in years...pass the Metamucil, please. A solo act since the duo broke up in 1994, Brooke was dumped by her record company in 1998 and began releasing muisc on her own Bad Dog label. And on her own terms. For her fourth disc Brooke maintains the breezy, matter-of-fact vocal stylings of her earlier work but takes things a step further with her deceptively simple, surprisingly poignant lyrics. On the melodic "Linger" she confesses to being of two romantic minds: "I am leaving cuz I love you/I am leaving cuz I don't/And I am hoping that you will follow/And praying that you won't." On the eerie "New Dress" she sings in mesmerizing harmony with former Crowded House frontman Neil Finn. Despite "Walking," which borders on preachiness, Pull is a grabber. Bottom Line: Steady on Leslie ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Apr 2001 20:32:13 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Liz's BYT Question << Now, Bob, you weren't supposed to write her whole paper for her!! >> But it's been so long since I wrote a paper, I wanted to make sure I could still do it! You can read it in two ways: And praying that you won't let me go, or And praying that you won't. Let me go! The part that People left out is what makes the song work, at least lyrically anyway. Musically, it has everything going for it and would still sound great even if she was singing made-up syllables!
