celebrating a birthday??
Well, here's a toast to you, Michael! A more generous, talented, open

better barbecuer of shrimp.
Have a great one, Michael, and may your friends from around the world
sing that weird minor for you good and loud!!

He knows most of you by name, at least those I have metioned, which is

He doesn't wuite get how we can get so involved but thinks it is a
positive thing for me.
His opinion of Joni is she is very talented but he is not into 'music to

Yes, except for the hotel, and the "fanciness," it's called the New England
Labor Day Jonifest. And instead of the auctions, there are giveaways, and
perhaps a raffle or two this year. (Any chance of changing your mind, Colin?)
I think everyone should just tell their families and significant others that
this is a "required" convention for Joni lovers! :-)

My husband is Arabic and we laugh about these things all the time!!! My
favorite here lately... I told him to quit being so nice when phone
solicitors call. I told him you don't have to talk for 15mins, just tell
them you're not interested and thank you, good-bye. Well, the next week or
so a solicitor called and Assem(my husband) answers. After a couple of
minutes I hear him say, "Thank you, but I'm not interesting." I'm still
laughing, and so is he.

Yes Wally,
English as second language can be tricky. During my student days in Durham
(UK) -- Yes, Arthur B, I was there at the same time as you were -- I once
went to watch a classical wind music ensemble. After a great bassoon solo
piece I remarked to one of my friends: "Isn't that a great baboon player?"

good morning jmdler'S. (not here in ct - it is a dark
and stormy day...)
being an avid guitarist, i stumbled upon
www.guitarnoise.com - i clicked upon links -> tab and
went from artist to artist. when i clicked on tori
amos' four star site (the joni site gets five!), i
chose 'live covers' and lo and behold, the site lists
two joni covers: "a case of you" (already in the
'undercover' listings) and "both sides now"(which i
did not see posted, and is not currently being hunted
down via: "we're looking for"). does anybody know more
about this version? i have sent a request for info to
the webmaster of the site. speaking of covers: bob -
the queen is in the bag.
have an awesome day all -
christopher.
NPIMH - both sides now (i wonder how that got there?)

this just popped in my head, and since i am a newbie i
don't know if the veterans here have already discussed
this: joni doing "goodbye blue sky" from the berlin

thought she did a remarkable job, though the wall
concert as a whole was sorta blah. admittedly, i am

Since yesterday was an "off" day for Joni mail, I took advantage of the break to peruse some of the articles that Les has on the database. Many thanks to you, Les, and to all you transcribers out there!!
Anyway, I had to smile broadly when I came upon this phrase:
"Recommended recordings: Fans will argue endlessly over whether Mitchell's best work is the spare early recordings (best typified by 1971's classic "Blue"), her pop albums (such as 1974's "Court and Spark") or her jazzier forays (including 1976's "Hejira" and 1979' s "Mingus"). "
Yes we will, won't we? (At least I HOPE we will) And of course, like almost all reviewers of her work (this was an article from 2000), they have her career ending in 1979! :~(

Good job, Christopher...I can always use more Hunters & Gatherers! As for Tori, her devotion to Joni is well documented. Her sublime take on Case of You (the studio version) was snagged volumes ago. I would be happy to include a GOOD QUALITY live version on a future volume. So far, I've heard about 4 different live takes on ACOY, but none made it through QC! :~)
As for BSN, I think I've heard her play a smidge of it as an intro to another song, "Pretty Good Year" maybe...anyway, I would welcome you Tori fans to chase these down if you're so inclined!

Well, this statement can certainly be taken a number of ways in this group, but I know what you're saying, and thanks again, buddy!

I recently learned through this list about the 'Jazz Takes on Joni Mitchell'.
I ordered both of them and am currently listening to them. I would have
never known about these gems were it not for you.
Also, I probably overlooked it but I did not see Joni's Farm Aid performance.
I have that if anyone is interested.

Now you've got me started . . . .
A student was studying for his PhD and had chosen to do his dissertation on
sheep shagging.
In order to do this, he travelled the length and breadth of the UK talking
to farmers about how they shagged their sheep.
The consensus, from interviews and demonstrations from farmers in Cornwall,
East Anglia, Northumberland, Scotland and Ireland was that the preferred
position was for the sheep to have it's front legs placed over a wall or
fence, and for the farmer to take the animal from behind.
However, on interviewing the Welsh sheep farmer, he got a different reply.
It seemed that the Welsh farmer preferred to place the animals front legs
over his shoulders and take the animal in the missionary position.
When asked why, as all other farmers across the UK appeared to practice a
different method, the farmer replied:
"Well, you don't want to miss out on the kissing, do you?"

yes indeed, happy fucking birthday, evian my 80's
brother!
as a special tribute to you, i present the following:
Subject: GROWING UP IN THE 80'S
You know you grew up in the 80's when.....
You know the profound meaning of "Wax on, Wax off."
You can sing the McDonald's Big Mac, Filet-o-fish,
quarter pounder and French fry song.
You know who Fat Albert is. And who was the old boy
with the pink mask?
You ever wore fluorescent, neon clothing.
You could breakdance, or wish you could.
You wanted to be The Hulk for Halloween.
You Believed that "By the power of Greyskull, you HAD
the power!"
Partying "like it's 1999" seemed SO far away.
You thought that Transformers were more than meets the
eye.
You knew that knowing is half the battle.
You can remember Michael Jackson when he was black.
You wore a banana clip at some point during your
youth.
You remember the garbage pail kids, and owned some.
You knew what Willis was "talkin' 'bout."
You knew "Rut row raggy" and "Zoinks."
You HAD to have your MTV.
You remember when ATARI was a state of the art video
game system.
You owned only cassettes.
You were led to believe that in the year 2000 we'd all
be living on the moon.
You remember and/or owned any of the Care Bear Glass
collection from Pizza Hut or the Muppets glasses from
McDonalds.
Poltergeist freaked you out.
You knew who Ben Stein was before you could win his
money, "Bueller?"
You carried your lunch to school in a Gremlins, ET,
Dukes of Hazzard, Knight Rider, Strawberry Shortcake
or A-Team lunch box.
You have ever pondered why Smurfette was the ONLY
female smurf.
You know what leg warmers are and probably had a pair.
You wore biker shorts underneath a short skirt and
felt stylish.
You wore your Izod shirt with the collar up.
You had a Swatch Watch with the Swatch Guard.
Your Legos collection started with the free sets in a
Happy Meal.
You remember when Happy Meals came in a box, not a
paper bag.
You had Wonder Woman or Superman underoos.
You know what a "Push Up" ice cream is.
You had to come in the house when the street lights
came on.
You had to change into play clothes after school.
You owned or knew somebody with a Commodore 64.
You hated Scrappy Doo.
You recorded songs off the radio with your boom box.
You wish you had a light saber.
Somehow you still know all the words to songs played
on VH1's "Big 80's" ("it's been 7 hours & 15 days...")
Your arm was covered in rubber bracelets.
You have ever said, "Gag me with a spoon."
You have ever wondered what happened to Saturday
morning cartoons.
You had to get up to change the channel.
You can still sing 1 to 12 from the Pinball machine on
Sesame Street.
You thought the "Thriller" video was very cool.
You remember the first time you went into a video
store to rent a movie.
You wore those wide, colorful shoelaces.
Quiet Riot's "Come on feel the noise" was the best
song - ever.
You know where "I want my two dollars" came from.
El Debarge's "Rhythm of the night" plagued the radio
every hour.
You remember life before minivans and SUVs.
If you can identify with at least half of this list
then you, my friend, are a "Child of the 80's".
Now, how old do you feel?

This actually happens to be a line from a song "HFB" which was performed a
couple of different times in New Orleans and was written by my good
friend(and brilliant songwriter and luthier extraordinaire) Mark Richard.
It is completely tounge in cheek and most people on this list know what it
is in reference to, and this is not the first time a reference has been
made. Among all of my friends here in Georgia, it has always been a great
honor when Mark is in town, for him to play this song at a birthday
celebration as he did at my 30th birthday with the original Zen
Dixie(Atlanta band) lineup. So I assure you that statement is made with the
utmost respect and I don't consider it swearing(on a side note I don't think
I have sworn since I was a teenager as I'm not really the swearing type.)
On top of that, as there's recently been several messages about the sex life
of dogs and their desire to copulate this seems rather minor in comparison.
But anyway, I think the list is doing fine and we should just leave it
alone. There's nothing wrong with being a little SALACIOUS now is there!

Subject: listening to Joni
After Bette had ended tonight, i just got the urge to listen to Joni. now,
that's an urge i'm sure so many of you guys are used to, i get it all the
time. the usual problem is that i just don't have the appropriate amount of
time. that is a major problem at times actually. i never get the chance to
listen to albums anymore. and i'm sure many others find this same problem.
i mean to *really* listen to them- pay attention and take it all in, almost
"active" listening, if you will. most of my listening occurs while
travelling to and from college or work. listening to Blonde in the
Bleachers over a backdrop of the din of traffic, and the ever so *noiseless*
engines of dublin buses, is not exactly ideal but it will have to suffice.
after having posed the "joni's Jazz" question, and having heard Twisted on
Bette, i guess i was thinking about listening to the more jazzy joni albums.
so, i listened to Mingus. in all honesty, that isn't a very common
occurence for me, and i *still* don't like wolf that lives in lyndsey AT
ALL.
i listened to the whole S&L album , and i texted Chris Marshall since S&L
always reminds me of my friend in Cambridge. as i wrote a message to him, i
realised that i had just listened to two whole albums(this may seem obvious,
but that wasn't how i was thinking). i had sat there with my cup of tea and
slice of toast (ok, so it was a few cups of tea) and listened "actively" to
these albums.
i hadn't listened to shadows and light in quite a while, and it is far
better than i remember!! i was chair-dancing along for half the album:-) i
should make the time more often. now, if i *make* the time to start
studying, it'll all be okay!
my point to you is that you should take one hour and listen to an album.
actually listen to it. an album, any album- Joni or not. it'll be worth
it.

Someone has probably already told you this but Bette recorded
'Twisted' on her second eponymous album. Her take on it is campier &
more frenetic than Joni's but I love it. I think both versions are
valid interpretations of the song. If you listen to Annie Ross sing
the original you can hear the departure points for both Joni & Bette's
versions, imo.
