Oh ya, I get that and more. In fact, most of my friends and family think I am weird to have made friends (the people I call my Joni friends) on the Internet. "Aren't you afraid," they ask. Heck no, the people I have met from this list have become fast and enduring friendships. Without exception and more are coming into life daily. In these last few days of List bashing and drama, I can safely say you of kindred spirit have greatly enriched my life. I have learned a lot about Joni, and even more about music in general. People come and people go, just like in the other aspects of life, but I have noticed most people from the List eventually come back. I did. If they don't, when you see them, it's like, "so what's going on with the List." We can't get enough of this stuff. We have a lot to be grateful for folks, five years ago my Joni knowledge was elementary compared to what I know today. Absent this List, I would have probably never known about the Mendel exhibit last summer, a very cool experience. Thanks to you all. I didn't respond because I can't wear wool sweaters cuz they are too scratchy. The keyboard was caked with mud & fur & drool & scratches all over the screen & the mouse was on the floor with teeth bites in it. I like what you wrote, Rick. I feel the same way. I have been listening to Joni's music for many years and until this list I never knew so many other people had the same appreciation for her music. And the people I have met on this list .... well, I have met many and have always felt that I could talk to anyone of them like I have known them all my life ... like a brother or sister. Heck, I can quote a line or verse from one of Joni's songs to a JMDLer and they know just what I am trying to express. Some of Joni's early work came right at a time in my life when I need sense thrown back my way. This is something that Kakki and I shared. That is why I was sad to see her leave. I have a feeling she will pop back around :-) As ever, Heather At 09:43 PM 3/28/01 -0500, Coyote4Joni@aol.com wrote: >Oh ya, I get that and more. Gawd Shane, That was great. I loved this post. (See what Kakki's missing?) I really like that you ended with the phrase "accomplished daughter". I liked this post I'm going to break the rules and re-post it in its entirety. Thanks Shane. **** Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2001 11:10:31 -0700 From: "shane mattison" Subject: "back in my home town, they would have cleared the floor just to watch the rain come down..." sitting with my morning java...i contemplate the prairie sun filtering through my den blinds, a prairie sun that knows no borders...so thoughts on "paprika plains" from my favourite joni album DJRD... favourite because it was a kind of creative peak... it had some of the polish of "hejira" but added an experimental edge, coupled with the romantic ravings of jaco taken just a little further...a wide variety of creativity here with links to all points of joni's creative career, there is stompin' beat, romantic rhapsody, social satire, symphonic composition, and the sublime acoustic reverie "silky veils of ardour" finale....the satisfaction of "paprika plains" covering the whole side of the LP, a piece that shares joni's canadian prairie identity...both of my parents were raised on sakatchewan farms and i spent many days there on tractor and combine... i know this heartland...and its glorious! Yes, there are no borders in the sense that the piece is similar to aron copeland....on the other hand, joni is referring in the above subject quote "they would have cleared the floor" to maidstone, saskatchewan, joni's home after being born in fort macleod, alberta,...moving to sask at age 3...so, let's admit it...this is canadian geography and topography we're talking about... these saskatchewan farmers would indeed have cleared the floor...calgary's 16"s of rain per annum would have seemed a luxury to them...because its a great composition it becomes universal and can just as easily be identified with in nebraska or kansas... but properly speaking we are dealing with saskatchewan...a prairie province of canada...where wheat is king...where joni's parents still reside...where she still returns "home" every year...where she took larry klein to share its stark landscape...and she sees don freed in between his musical journeys to the always present native communities...saskatchewan is joni mitchell and they can be proud that she is and will always be their accomplished daughter... shane mattison **** ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2001 22:42:27 EST From: TerryM2222@aol.com Subject: Kakki Though I've only been reading bits and pieces these last few days, I did read about Kakki's departure, yet can't find any reference to what caused her to leave. Kakki and I came to this list around the same time- when it was still a newborn. I just can't bear to think of this list without her humor, wisdom and kind heart. So, I refuse to believe that her departure is permanent. Kakki, if you're reading this, please take some time off to refuel.
