I'm a smoker who really wants to quit. It's the most insidious addiction. Trouble is, I like it, and so many activities (like surfing the Net and emailing) are inseparable from an ashtray with a lit cigarette. The previously mentioned Fran Lebowitz has probably been a dire influence (her definition of laziness: "I wish cigarettes came already lit"). Cigarettes also go only too well with the morning cup of coffee and the evening glass of wine or Scotch. There are so many toxins in the air now that it seems ridiculous to ban cigarette smoking within fifty feet of a building situated on a busy street. But in a bar or (especially) restaurant, I have no problem. Victoria, B.C. is very similar to how Kakki describes L.A. At my favorite watering hole, The Old Bailey (to which I've brought many a JMDLer over the years), they've made a segregated smoking room. You have to buy your drink at the bar and take it into the smoking room: the staff may not be obliged to enter. Thing is, they all smoke anyway, so they spend their breaks there, and any other time they can steal away from their duties. However hard governments may try, you can't legislate human behaviour! By the way, I remember reading an interview with Joni about "Smokin' Try Another" in which she said she was referring to a late night recording session. The cigarette machine had nothing left in it but Kools, which are unacceptable to even the most hard-core smoker. Very best to all, smokers and non, and especially to ex-smokers, Roberto ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Mar 2001 03:05:15 EST From: FWSCHNAUZERMOM@aol.com Subject: Re: introduce myself I love the phrase "undisputed queen of mind beauty". A recent show at the Jazz Cafe was great. Apart from her own stuff - 'Amoureuse' is a classic - she has some great covers in her live set - and on her live album 'Almost Naked http://www.tickety-boo.com/kiki/. This is what she says about a couple of Canadian songwriters:- 'Carey' "What can I say, I really like this Joni Mitchell song. Part of me thinks I shouldn't cover her because she's so good, but for the live album it was fun, and the more I sing it, the better I get. It is possible to make a song your own if you don't just copy the original." And this is what she says about her Jane Siberry covers: Miss Punta Blanca: "She is a fine Canadian singer-songwriter and we put this song in the set one night because its funny and very different from anything else I was singing at the time. The first time I sang it on the tour I was feeling my way and I remember the audience being a bit bemused by it. Needless to say it has to be sung with real confidence because its so quirky and so Jane Siberry. The song is about a girl observing another girl win a beauty contest - I wonder where the idea evolved?" Calling All Angels: "Last but not least a brilliant song from Jane Siberry which I really love. I think you should listen to this song if you get the chance and see what you think." Talking of the wonderful 'Sib', I see from her museletter that she'll be singing two songs as part of the 'Bluebird North' Songwriters Series at the Rivoli Club in Toronto, Canada next Tuesday - March 27. Other people playing that night (all new to me) are Wendell Ferguson, Violet Ray, Lisa Patterson, Dean McTaggart, Andy Maize and, Josh Finlayson (Skydiggers), hosted by Tom Wilson from Junkhouse. PaulC ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Mar 2001 09:52:01 +0100 From: M.Russell@iaea.org Subject: [none] In reply to "Garret" : I got a lot out of reading your thoughtful analysis of smoking. For someone who has never smoked, you seem to have a really complete picture of why people smoke and what it does to them.. I just wanted to reply to one thing you said: > ... but surely Joni knows that the risk > increases with exposure, the more she smokes > the higher her risk. as long as she *does* know > the facts, then it is her *choice* to smoke, just > like it is her choice to paint, her choice to sing! The thing about smoking, at least for most people, is that it isn't a *choice* at all. It's an *addiction*. This is a big and important difference. People who smoke and are addicted (it is possible to smoke without being addicted) are driven to smoke by something (or things) within themselves beyond their control - the physical addiction itself, the psychological addiction to having something in their hands, the habits developed over time during smoking, plus of course all the reasons smokers give for smoking - anxiety, glamor, clarity of thought, etc., etc. I smoked heavily for 15 years and never thought I could quit - tried cold turkey, tried to OD, tried cutting down - nothing worked until I tried not inhaling every cigarette I smoked. I allowed myself to smoke whenever I wanted to as long as I didn't inhale and I still have that permission. The first three days were horrible, but after that, without even trying, I was smoking half the number of cigarettes I had smoked previously. I also did some psychological things to retrain my brain - like breaking smoking habit patterns, thinking of all the bad things about smoking whenever I did light up, and some other stuff. After three months, I was down to just a few cigarettes every day (less than 7, sometimes only 1 or 2). Then I really went cold turkey, still with permission to smoke as long as I didn't inhale. That was in 1983. I have been pretty much smoke free since then (maybe I've had a total of about 20 cigarettes since then - I still enjoy an occasional cigarette without inhaling). I know I will never be addicted again and it is such a relief to be free. I can think as clearly or more clearly than I could when I smoked. Food tastes a lot better. I have more friends. I enjoy breathing clean air. There are so many advantages to not smoking. All of the excuses that addicted smokers use to keep smoking are just excuses, and Joni's Hawaiian excuse is about the silliest and stupidest excuse I have ever heard, and her insistence on smoking in non-smoking areas is embarrassing. Having said this, I also know from personal experience that smoking addictively is one of the hardest things on earth to change. In making this announcement, Hell stated that she would be in serious negotiations with her personal banking consultant in order to raise/find/beg for the necessary funds and made the following comment. "Oh, what the hell. You only live once, damn it, and I could be hit by a bus tomorrow. What's another few thousand dollars debt? And besides, Paz owes me a bottle of Tequila." Hell also commented on the logistics of flying half-way round the world with limited resources, and hinted that any offers of assistance, in particular a piece of floor to sleep on (albeit a fairly large, and preferably a very soft piece of floor), in various US cities, would be gratefully received. The excitement, and dare we say, anticipation which will arise from this announcement will no doubt stir the very furthest reaches of the internet community. We will endeavour to keep you informed of news as it arrives, and recommend you stay tuned. I smoke from time to time, and have done so for twenty-odd years now, but I'm not addicted by any means. I can take it or leave it. My mom and dad have always smoked as far back as I can remember. My father picked up the habit over three tours of duty in Viet Nam, where "Lucky Strikes" were included in all "C-rations," the packets that contained the tin-canned and foil-wrapped food combat soldiers ate in "the shit" as Dad used to call the war on the rare occasions when he'd talk about his experiences over there. Of course, that was before the post-traumatic stress ravaged him completely and we became estranged. I think he smokes Winstons now. I couldn't help but notice his butts when I last saw him, 4 years ago, at my youngest brother's funeral. But back then dad smoked Pall Mall straights, those filterless jobs that came in an all red pack with some royal symbol in white lettering on it. Those squares always made the ground beneath my feet spin sickly whenever I shared the ones I pilfered from my mom's purse with my homeboys behind the school house. Mom had switched to Pall Malls too, so that she and dad would smoke the same brand and she could pick up cartons and cartons of the crap at the PX at a huge military discount. Which brings me to my main point: I have no problem with smokers. My beef is with the damned tobacco companies and the government. How the hell do they get away with it? They're selling death! It's one of those utopian myths about life in the U.S., along with the fallacies of democracy and equal protection under the law, even as duly cast presidential votes are ignored and wealthy criminals are legally pardoned. The myth that the government will protect us from harmful foods and drugs. The U.S. is more capitalistic than democratic. Of the people, by the people and for the people my ass...it's always about the money. Roberto said: <> There is a classic example of what I despise about the tobacco industry. Just as "Virginia Slims" cigarettes and the associated marketing blitz were intended, and largely succeeded, in enslaving a generation of women into smoking, ironically, by equating the product with liberation ("You've come a long way, baby"), Kools were marketed almost exclusively to the African American community. Even today, try to go through any predominantly Black neighborhood in the U.S. without seeing Kool billboards everywhere, right alongside the multitude of ads glorifying malt liquor, which is also marketed almost exclusively to black people...and Bob Muller. :-) And it works...most people in the black community where I grew up smoked Kools exclusively, assured by the ubiquitous jazz image-based ads that smoking that brand was cool indeed. Studies have confirmed that upwards of 80% of current smokers got hooked before they were 17. Thus your Joe Camel cartoon ads and other promotions targeted at teens and pre-teens. Bob Marley used to sing: "Every time I plant a seed, dem say 'kill it before it grows, kill it before it grows..." They're selling death and we're buying it. Just as we're buying "Red Bull" for example, because it's cutely advertised with cartoons on television and comes in a pretty silver and blue can. Nobody even knows the color of the liquid or the taste or nutritional content, or what the hell kind of beverage it's supposed to be. No one seems to give a rip either, as long as it's "cool." The persuasive and manipulative power of modern advertising and marketing shouldn't be underestimated. Some of these companies will knowingly kill you and laugh all the way to the bank while you're dying. - -Julius ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Mar 2001 07:19:28 EST From: Artheobeat@aol.com Subject: Re: joni and smoking (now njc) In a message dated 3/21/01 5:42:53 AM, evian@sk.sympatico.ca writes: << Hey smokers, quick question: Is it just me, or do you seem to form bizarre smoking relationships with other smokers? >> Being one who turned from cigarettes to cigars four years ago on my 50th birthday - the result of my oldest and dearest friend (34 years, since 1967) and fellow band member for more than two decades, giving me a Daniel Marshall humidor filled with Arturo Fuente 'Hemingway Classics" - I have formed some casual relationships with other cigar smokers through the store at which I buy my 'Hemingways'.
