I'm curious as to how many of us who saw Joni during last year's BSN tour also saw her smoke on stage. I did not. I remember this clearly because when intermission came, I remarked to Mary, "Joni's probably dying for a cig." JMDLers, did Joni smoke at YOUR BSN show? On BBC Radio 1's "My Top 12", broadcast on May 29, 1983, Joni was talking about her influences. She mentioned Edith Piaf among her top 12!! Does anyone have any idea what this video is? Did they film any of the BSN tour? ****** In a word, "no". I don't know of any video shot (other than by JMDLers!!) of the BSN tour. The only video at Pine Knob near Detroit, was for the "giant screens" to help the less fortunate see from the back rows. If a video production was in place in LA or NYC, I'm sure that any JMDLer with an eye for detail would have caught a little lace along the seams. On the other hand, there's a new high resolution audio format called DVD-Audio. The boys over at Stereophile had a pre-release version of Both Sides Now a year ago but it does not appear to be out. I looked at www.acousticsounds.com where they specialize in high-end media without luck. I'm not positive but I believe that some versions of DVD-Audio support playback on DVD movie machines as 24/96, in two channels. Anyway, Lama Eventually, we may see new machines that will play all of these formats: CD, CD-R, DVD-Video (movies, mate!), SACD (high res as produced by Sony & Phillips in an attempt to guarantee a format war, mate!), and DVD-Audio (high res from the rest of the world). The few discs presently available cost 50% more than CD! Even Sterophile doesn't like the way things are shaping up. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2001 22:20:31 -0800 From: jan gyn Subject: Re: Smokin NJC At 01:50 AM 3/22/01 +0000, catman wrote: >Have you noticed how the badies in films smoke and the goodies don't? >Hardly subtle! I remember reading about the marriage ceremony between fashion photographer David Bailey and actress Catherine Deneuve in the late 60s. It was tres' scandalous- he wore a black leather motorcycle jacket, she smoked throughout the entire ceremony. "the words i love you till the day i die" - the next line says that it's a lie - and have you realy heard how her voice viberats on that "lie" - it's as if she's turning the day she'll die into a lie. on the other hand heavy smoking is one of the best ways to commit suicide, from every where i fear and everything i dread come true and the nicotin attack song to the shaking scared voice that sings "hooowww where's my will" - but i don't think that joni has ever (yet) sang it all goodbie. she's glued to life. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2001 22:29:21 -0800 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: RE: JMDL Digest V2001 #135 Wow. I guess her performance or the possibility having a one on one with her would far out weight that consideration to me. Someone sitting and rudely blowing smoke in my face is not tolerable to me, but I feel there are so many things every day that I'm exposed to that are bad for my health technically (exhaust, chemicals, even the water we drink, etc.) that I just think that would be the last thing on my mind to contront her about. That's all.
