I wrote to her agreeing and saying how much I liked Eva's 'Songbird' album which had not long been released on a small label in Brighton in the UK. Turned out Laura was Eva's cousin and, since her death a couple of years earlier, she'd had been trying hard to keep her music alive, but felt like she was beating her head against a brick wall. Whilst all the specialist folk radio shows were all raving about her voice, mainstream radio just weren't interested. One major commercial radio station, even though they had been sent a press release saying that Eva died of cancer in 1996, had even written back rejecting it, but saying that it "showed promise" and to let them know when she recorded her next album. (!) Knowing that I loved Joni, Laura wrote to tell me that they were planning to include Eva's version of 'Woodstock' on another posthumous album they were putting together - ('Time After Time'). What has happened over here in the last few months is truly amazing. It seems the producer of Terry Wogan's morning show on BBC Radio 2 decided to play Eva's version of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' and the BBC switchboards just went nuts. Meanwhile another BBC TV producer had seen some old black and white footage of Eva singing 'Rainbow' recorded live at Blues Alley in Washington and decided to include it on Top of the Pops 2 - getting the highest audience response they've ever had. Suddenly all the newspapers were writing articles about her, and this last week alone there have been features on national breakfast television and on a major evening ITV news show. More than two years after its release, it has just been announced today that 'Songbird' is Number 1 in the Official UK Album Chart this week. US Radio, your call. PaulC Hi Paul, Just catching up on my posts and had to reply to this and tell a little story. I first learnt about Eva from this list and from a friend who listens to Wogan and to Michael Parkinson who also champions her cause on Radio 2. Dave lent me Songbird which I liked and then I remember you sent me Time after Time to take to Ashara when I visited and I have fond memories of listening to that album in her car as we drove up to Connecticut. Anyway, last Monday I went to a brilliant Bert Jansch concert in Brighton and just before that I was having a meal with a friend and asking her, as the restaurant played Sting's Field of Gold, if she had heard of Eva Cassidy. She said that she had but only because a fellow librarian was married to a guy who worked for the record company who promoted her and that she had seen him on tv talking about the affect Eva's recent popularity had had on the company. The next day, my friend went to work and told her colleague that I liked Eva and the next day she appeared with 2 albums for us. This morning the husband was interviewed again on local radio and this evening on local TV. What a phenomonon! Also coincidentally, Paul, I was studying your album cover this evening, as my daughter is at the final stage of preparing art work for a cd had friend has just made, and we were checking to see if anything vital had been missed off! Looking forward to meeting up with you at the Kashmir in April. It is the first 3 paragraphs that Wally wrote about her on his website! (I just checked...) How did that happen? The DVD is c 2000 by Panorama video out of Hong Kong. Looks like an official release. I belive it is a region 1, but the seller said it was an all region disc- doesn't matter- I like it. I paid 35 for it- considering I spent 50 for the S&L Japan release a few years ago, not bad. I for one would love to read it! :~) This I think is my favorite Joni song of all (along with All I Want) and on my less lucid days I think about it fairly simple, and interpret the false alarm as referring to true love - this was the relationship that she thought of as The One and yet it wasn't - it sounded like it was, she responded as if it were, and yet, it fell short, ended. On my more lucid days I think that is way too simplistic and I am boggled by the different layers of Amelia - there must be deeper relationships between Joni's description of relationship and Amelia Earhardt than just the use of a metaphor. Today I am not very lucid though, so I'll leave it at that. - -Yael ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2001 12:32:46 +1000 From: john low Subject: The other side NJC Gerald, my 'walking musical encyclopaedia' mate from Melbourne wrote: >Hey John, don't forget that Daevid Allen, founder of >both Soft Machine and Gong, originally came from >Melbourne. I was pleased to see that Ian McFarlane gives him quite a sizeable entry in his excellent encyclopaedia of Australian rock music. Allen returned to Australia for a number of years during the 1980s, before heading back to Britain and forming another version of Gong that's still touring. He is a really interesting musician IMO. He continued to record outside the Group during these years, and still does, playing great jazz with some of the music's brightest lights ... but it's in those five Group albums I believe you'll find the way to "get" Pat." Metheny's career has always grown @ a dizzying rate. When he was only 16 he played w/Herbie Hancock. At the age of 19, he joined the Gary Burton group. Burton is one of the best vibraphonists in the world- IMHO. (The same year, Metheny played w/Paul Bley) The Burton collaboration is the longest that Metheny has played in another's band. The work is sublime. From "Ring" the first he played on, "Dreams So Real" in '75, "Passengers" in '76- all just brilliant. For me, Metheny's first solo releases are the best introduction to his talent, rather than the later ones. "Bright Size Life" from '75 w/Jaco Pastorius and Bob Moses is his first solo release. Followed by "Watercolors" in '77. "New Chattaugua" was released in '78, the same year as the first Pat Metheny Group. For me, Metheny is at his best here. Acoustic, alone, recorded in one session. It is a "must-listen"! I do have almost all of his releases- some are clearly not as accessible as others. And he continues to amaze. Dreams, dreams, and false alarms... whatever Joni had hoped for, whatever her dream was, it was crashed, it had crashed (see penultimate verse), just as Amelia Earhart had a dream, a journey she wished to make, she flew in the icy altitutdes, and her dream crashed and she was alone - and dead. Amelia was the pioneer woman who had a dream in man's world, Joni has her dreams in an induistry also male dominated and they both pushed the limits of doing it their war. I see the song "Amelia" as an elergy, as an evocation of a place that Joni is in, an emotional or psychological place, where seeing the ending of a dream. The dream may have been, for Joni, a happy relationship. Whatever it was, it had crashed and Joni's dream, like Amelia's, ended in futility. A related, somewhat opposite, image appears in the movie The Great Waldo Pepper, made about the same time, where in the end Waldo has accomplished his dream and flies off in his bi-plane into a cloud, alone, never to land; his bi-plane lost its landing gear, but the crash that is to come (and kill him) is meaningless as Waldo has accomplised his dreams and flies off, alone, in the cloud. The above: all IMHO. Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune has written of that song as if it is the one that moves him the most. Even my very obtuse former partner, who said when we were halfway through the S&L video, "have we had enough Joni?," was caught by the poignancy of that song. Amelia, whether we understand the words, we all understand what she feels, what she is saying beyond the mere words with her music, with the entire sound. Like an opera, we don't need to understand the words to relate to the emotion. That is why IMHO "Amelia" is one of Joni's most moving songs. This is about 30 minutes before my alarm goes off. Well anyway, this morning after performing my duties as door opener for His Feline Majesty, I got back in bed and while trying to drift off to catch another half hour's worth of zz's, I got to thinking about the recent thread about Songs To Aging Children Come. The thread may be dead but not in my head. I think this song is Joni's answer to the question: Where do your songs come from? Joni replies that they come from the wells of her imagination (I think they're windless for the sake of alliteration) and might be inspired by a light show at a rock concert (with or without chemical stimulation.) Or maybe a song arises from watching a fortune teller read her tea leaves (she thinks of Rose - her heart begins to tremble) or if you're a famous songwriter or maybe a musician in a Renaissance royal court, maybe your work is commissioned or ordered by the King and Queen for a royal marriage or birth or some other fete or holiday. From these sources and by these sometimes mystical & mysterious avenues, songs (to aging children) come. In the next verse she wonders why everyone else doesn't hear all the music that she does. After all, being the musical genius that she is, she hears songs outside her window & the traffic writes the words. This is the woman who tunes her guitar to bird song. Maybe people are just going too fast to hear all the music in the world that Joni hears in all that chiming & clicking & laughing. Some of the melodies that come to her are not happy ones. Some come with sad & melancholic images attached to them. Listening to these melodies inspires words that fill the eyes with tears and the heart with sorrow (but with Joni they always end up making us feel better somehow.) And of course the natural world makes many contributions to Joni's songbook. The scent of dying roses yield up a perfumed rhapsody (but will they bequeath it to her?) The moon serenades her with it's songs (all of them silver?) as it strums the strings of stars that stretch across the galaxy. And by describing in poetic language how her muse inspires her, a song (to aging children) comes. I know I am biased on this subject being a rather defiant (but hopefully never rude) smoker myself. I see how she broke the rules in Saskatoon and at the Tribute but how grevious was the effect in reality? She lit up one or two in the gallery - I don't think Gilles, who was close to her could have cared less, and the amount of smoke was not enough to ruin the gallery environment. Smoke can affect paintings, but in this case, they were her own, and no doubt subjected to years of her smoke anyway. Maybe it was rude to the reporters? Most of them were international and most countries outside the U.S. don't make as big a deal about secondhand smoke that we do. She was probably anxious about the show, she is admittedly quite addicted, and it was her big day, so in that perspective, I don't think I would call her out on it. As for the Tribute, again I don't think one cigarette up in her balcony with Donald and friends was so egregious. Last I knew smoking inside was allowed in New York (although perhaps not in that venue). I'm not trying to excuse her and say she is above the rules, but I have seen so many people go way over the top in their zealotry against smokers. One can smoke outside in downtown L.A. 50 feet away from the nearest human being, and there is bound to be a person who will start loudly coughing and complaining. This is where I agree with colin - why aren't they more concerned with the general air pollution in downtown L.A., which is equivalent to smoking a pack and a half a day, or worse yet, the particulate matter emissions from cars that everyone commuting to work is subjected to on the freeways and streets every day? Some people are so hypocritcal. I've had some people who I know to regularly smoke pot start coughing around me smoking OUTSIDE, complaining about their lung and bronchial problems. I've known others who are selective with whom they reprimand like an ex-snoker woman I know who only goes after the easy mark to make a big scene about their smoking but who will also have one herself if it's with a new guy she is attracted to. I would bet Joni has either experienced or witnessed some of these same situations and I think it does stoke her defiance a bit. Bottom line is people should be so zealous about tackling the more important big issues, IMHO. ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 20:15:58 -0800 From: "Kathryn Herrity" Subject: Re: Songs To Aging Children Come WOW Mark, once again you get the platinum star.
