(njc) Yes, I think we are all connected in a way that is very real, but in some senses subliminal in everyday life. The only thing I ever understood in Sunday School was "Where is God? God is everywhere." I'm not sure about us always existing though. I have this image of what death might be. And maybe it's a little different for everyone. I am happiest when I let nature envelop me, when I feel like part of nature. I think that death will be like that - that I'll be the sky and the water. There will be times of incredible tranquility and times of storms. Just as there are times of happiness and health and times of sorrow and sickness. Maybe the idea is to remain strong and true to your ideals in all the changes. Thank you for indulging in my spiritual curiosity on this almost-spring Sunday :-) lots of love Anne ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 01:25:17 -0000 From: "Paul Castle" Subject: Jonatha Story + Jennifer I too really enjoyed your adventures with Jonatha, Michael. Thanks. Although I've heard the name, for some reason I've not heard any of her music over here. Can you, or anyone else, recommend a good place to start? In Vancouver, I made a point of going to see Jennifer Kimball, whose harmony singing on Lucy Kaplansky's 'Just You Tonight' had caught my ear in a big way. (NJC) I found this earlier today and just remembered to forward it on to all who might be interested. Best Paz Update: Elton, Heart, Martin For Brian Wilson Tribute Updating an earlier story, Elton John, Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, and Beatles producer Sir George Martin will all take part in TNT's "All Star Tribute To Brian Wilson," set for March 29 at New York's Radio City Music Hall. An email message sent to Radio City's Backstage Access members late this afternoon (March 2) revealed that the former Beach Boys leader will also perform a short set at the event. And, not unlike many of the shows on Wilson's 2000 tour, the show will include a performance of the Beach Boys' landmark "Pet Sounds" album in its entirety accompanied by the Radio City Music Hall Orchestra. As was the case earlier today, a TNT spokesperson declined comment. A limited number of tickets will be sold beginning tomorrow (March 3) via the Internet to Backstage Access members, and then to American Express Gold cardholders beginning March 8. Remaining tickets are scheduled to go on sale to the public March 12 via Ticketmaster. The evening will be taped for broadcast on the cable outlet, probably sometime in June or during the summer. An official announcement from the network confirming the event and participants is expected sometime next week. Another artist who has been rumored as taking part is Melissa Etheridge, although there has been no confirmation of her participation. The Barenaked Ladies, whose song "Brian Wilson" was last year covered by its namesake, were initially thought to be part of the line-up, but will be on tour in the U.K. at the time of the taping. The event, first revealed here last December, will cap a season of accolades for Wilson and his former group. Wilson was inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame last June, while the Beach Boys were recently among those honored with a Lifetime Achievement award at the 43rd annual Grammy Awards. In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the band, Capitol Records will release a total of 16 of the band's albums on eight discs in March and April. In addition, the band's late drummer, Brian's brother Dennis, who drowned in 1983, will be remembered in a new book, "Dumb Angel: The Life & Music Of Dennis Wilson." The Adam Webb-penned book, which includes a forward by R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, will be published June 15 in the U.S. by Creation Books. TNT's inaugurated its series of tributes in 1998 with "Burt Bacharach: One Amazing Night," and has since staged events honoring Johnny Cash, Bob Marley, and Joni Mitchell. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2001 22:31:19 EST From: TanyerSCO@aol.com Subject: Re: Edith and the Kingpin and some new stuff In a message dated 3/17/01 11:36:55 PM Eastern Standard Time, MDESTE1 writes: << Time OUT. Names go in and out of fashion, and when Joni wrote this song, anyone named Edith would have more likely been one of Myrtle's contemporaries than one of Joni's. And even though Joni's Edith was a southern belle, and the song has a modern setting ("Disco dancers greet him") I think it just might be possible that she was paying some sort of an homage to Piaf. I know Edith Piaf had a tragic love life -- and who hasn't? -- but was she ever involved with some kind of a kingpin? And, if I remember correctly, I think she died because of some kind of substance abuse -- was it cocaine? Could those "Impossibly gentle hands and blood-red fingernails" have belonged to Edith Piaf? I'm just wondering if you've seen the movie "Crossroads" with Ralph Macchio (and don't let that put you off - he's not too bad). It follows Ralph as a young classical guitarist at Julliard, who has a equal passion for the blues. He discovers what he thinks is a reference to a "lost" song by Robert Johnson, and breaks one of Johnson's band members (Willie) out of a "retirement prison" - kind of an old people's prison - and they head back to Mississippi. It's one of my favourites, and centre's around Johnson's (and Willie's) deal with the devil - made at the Crossroads. The guitar "duel" at the end with Ralph up against Steve Vai is incredible! Ry Cooder wrote most of the music, and is Ralph's double for the duel, although Ralph does most of the rest of the guitar work in the movie. Well worth a look! Yes, I love Stoosh, and the song "Twisted"! My criteria for buying albums of artists I'm not familiar with is that I like/love at least two songs, and on this one, the two I loved were "Hedonism" and "Brazen" - but I love it all, with maybe the exception of the first track, "Yes, It's Fucking Political" - just a little bit too "punk" for me! I've mentioned here before the video I have of the Mamas and Papas - and a lot of it is interviews with John. He mentions the album he was making with Mick and Keith, and that it never got made because they were either to busy (a) waiting for the drugs, (b) taking the drugs, or (c) enjoying the effects of the drugs. It was pretty amazing that he managed to turn his life around like he did, and sad that he never got to see this album released. The video also shows footage of him in the midst of organising Monterey - on the phone, frantically trying to get hold of people. I still get shivers watching him describe Cass Elliot's funeral, and how he fell apart and pounded on the casket. A pretty amazing man. RIP. But then I would expect a self-confessed music slut to have some pretty obscure tastes (and I don't mean that in a bad way!) I thought this would be an interesting exercise, and so far it has been. It's really interesting to see some of the artists people have named - artists you wouldn't normally expect a Joni-lover to like.
