During the height of the tension around desegregation here in Boston I was living in (had grown up in, actually) Dorchester, a section of the city that has always been a real melting pot of people of various ethnic groups. Anyway, I was riding the last train home one night (midnight). The train was full of all us city kids, black, white, hispanic, you name it. Someone had a 'boom box.' That song came on. Every single person on that train got up in the aisles and danced! It was FANTASTIC!!! I remember thinking "This is how it's supposed to be." Anyway, I also have something called "Solitudes Favorite Selections" by Dan Gibson. It combines well known classical pieces with sounds of nature like bird calls. When I play it (which isn't that often, actually) the cats go nuts looking for the birds! And it makes me a little less homesick for living by the pond. And since I have your attention (ok, so by now most of you have scrolled down or hit delete, shaking your head...) does anyone have a copy of the soundtrack from the movie "Country?" Give me an old black man with no teeth singing his ass off with a beat up hand made guitar and harp or even singing while hes doing hand jive and its music to my soul. So recently as always Ive got one of these in my car. Blind Lemon Jefferson. Muddy Waters. Robert Johnsons 29 songs (a fabulous box set with an extensive booklet) is ALWAYS close by. I played Terraplane Blues and Dead Shrimp Blues about 10 times in a row on my last long car drive. And theres something about Hellhound on My Trail that makes me think that the rumors that Robert actually met the Devil hisself at the crossroads may have actually happened. That song casts a spell of unknown origin and Im not kidding. Of course Sweet Home Chicago always gets me even though Im not from Chicago. Its always a trip when someone gets in my car and I put on Roberts tape. the first reaction is always "Whats wrong with your radio?" because its this old tinny mono sound that sounds old as hell. But after a few minutes all thoughts about the quality dissipates and pretty soon its "Wow for just a voice and one little guitar that sure sounds good". Sonny Terry and Brownie Mcgee; also love to listen to those guys. Recently Ive been playing this old blues festival tape which has several songs on it that I just can listen to over and over and over. Then theres Vangelis. Some of his stuff is at the other end of the spectrum from the former but it seems to realign all the molecules in my brain. Aural Chiropractor. ZZ Topp. I know. Cliched. But Billie and his voice gets me going. TV Dinners. Sharp Dressed Man. Legs. Love Thang. I dont know. Just makes me feel good. Then again I also play Old Keltic music. I have a Keltic Christmas CD that can be played any time. The music is timeless. Conjures up spirits from centuries ago. A harp and a guitar has to be one of the best combos ever invented. Along with this I have an album and tapes of Bert Jansch thats one of the best Coffee and the Sunday Paper experiences I know. Lastly there are the original Small Faces. Ogdens Nut Gone Flake. The round album. Cheers. (njc) Like Joni, I too wonder where prayers go. But I have an even more fundamental question that I'd be curious to get responses to. What is prayer? Is it a plea for help? Is it something memorized and recited? Is it a state of awareness? Do you need all 3 of these ingredients to make a prayer? Are some prayers better than others? I've often said that faith is the ability to lean on absolutely nothing at all. I know some of you may disagree with that, that you have to have faith in something. Do you think prayer might be that ability to be still? Could prayer actually be absolute silence? (njc) Anne, For me, It is synchronistic that you ask these questions today. Last night, I was going through a tough time and called a friend to ask for help in my immense confusion. She said, "Get into your tub, and pray." I got off the phone, and wondered how I could possibly do that in the state I was in. My mind was reeling, my emotions were running wild, and even my physical body was breaking down. Somehow, I found my prayers in that warm water enveloping me, and came out of the water with much more clarity and peace. I think prayers can be some or all of the things you mentioned, and more. To me, it is a very personal invocation, and changes each time I do it. I personally don't think there is a right or wrong way- only the letting go, and the trust that the prayer will be heard. A couple of years ago I saw a post on a newsgroup from a lady named Laura Bligh about the difficulty of getting airplay for music that didn't fit "the formula" - in particular, Eva Cassidy. I wrote to her agreeing and saying how much I liked Eva's 'Songbird' album which had not long been released on a small label in Brighton in the UK. Turned out Laura was Eva's cousin and, since her death a couple of years earlier, she'd had been trying hard to keep her music alive, but felt like she was beating her head against a brick wall. Whilst all the specialist folk radio shows were all raving about her voice, mainstream radio just weren't interested. One major commercial radio station, even though they had been sent a press release saying that Eva died of cancer in 1996, had even written back rejecting it, but saying that it "showed promise" and to let them know when she recorded her next album. (!) Knowing that I loved Joni, Laura wrote to tell me that they were planning to include Eva's version of 'Woodstock' on another posthumous album they were putting together - ('Time After Time'). What has happened over here in the last few months is truly amazing. It seems the producer of Terry Wogan's morning show on BBC Radio 2 decided to play Eva's version of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' and the BBC switchboards just went nuts. Meanwhile another BBC TV producer had seen some old black and white footage of Eva singing 'Rainbow' recorded live at Blues Alley in Washington and decided to include it on Top of the Pops 2 - getting the highest audience response they've ever had. Suddenly all the newspapers were writing articles about her, and this last week alone there have been features on national breakfast television and on a major evening ITV news show. More than two years after its release, it has just been announced today that 'Songbird' is Number 1 in the Official UK Album Chart this week. US Radio, your call. PaulC PS. On the subject of radio airplay, this article says it all - http://www.salon.com/ent/feature/2001/03/14/payola/index.html Here's an example of what the author seems to refer to as the 'good old days' (!?!) "The indie promoter was once a tireless hustler, the lobbyist who worked the phones on behalf of record companies, cajoling station jocks and program directors, or P.D.s, to add a new song to their playlists. Sure, once in a while the indies showed their appreciation by sending some cocaine or hookers to station employees, but the colorful crew of fix-it men were basically providing a service". ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2001 15:42:55 EST From: FMYFL@aol.com Subject: Re: Songbird (NJC) Paul wrote: << More than two years after its release, it has just been announced today that 'Songbird' is Number 1 in the Official UK Album Chart this week. Sitting and being still, quietening the self, 'goint into that secret place within' and there just be quiet. Anything that needs to come will come-peace, joy, patience, strength, courage etc. I see little point in telling God what to do or asking him for anything. She has already given us everything we need. In that quietness we will become aware of what it is. bw colin ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2001 21:26:46 +0000 From: catman Subject: Re: Songbird (NJC) It beacme a hit due to Laura's version of Over The Rainbow being used in a commercial. Not to be didactic but if this is a question to people today they have literally disconnected from a million years of human history. Clue: You cant pray to yourself and you cant pray to nothing because the meaning of the word itself is to request acknowledgement from someone or thing OTHER than oneself. That doesnt leave alot of other targets. Hint. The answer for all history is G_ _ (s). I don't know the answers Anne, but this made me think of a line from Emmylou's song 'The Pearl': We lift up our prayer against the odds And fear the silence is the voice of God of God of God I consider myself a spiritual person but not a religious person. Usually I don't cotton much to specific references to a specific faith. But I love this song. Especially that last verse: Like falling stars through the universe we are hurled Down through the long loneliness of the world Until we behold the pain become the pearl The pearl The pearl Maybe that's what we're meant to do in this life. Summers, whose arching guitar featured on classic Police tracks "Every Breath You Take" and "Roxanne," is touring Europe with a new bass player and drummer to promote his latest album "Peggy's Blue Skylight." The disc features innovative interpretations of tunes by jazz great Charles Mingus and includes guest vocal appearances by Blondie's Debbie Harry and rapper Q-Tip. "I never thought I'd make a recording of Mingus' music," Summers told Reuters. "The creative challenge is to respect the composer and make a nice homage but at the same time I want to make sure that my voice is on there and make it sound contemporary." Mingus had a huge output of over 300 tracks, so deciding which to record was an arduous task. "You have to saturate yourself in the music -- I got everything I could on Mingus, I read his autobiography, played all the music, put it all into different categories, did different recordings of the tunes and played it all on guitar until I was immersed in it and I could make a selection." Summers is playing small clubs in front of about 100 fans on his current tour, a far cry from his time with The Police, who at the height of their success played New York's massive Shea Stadium in front of 70,000 fans. But Summers is happy, knowing the intimate venues suit his current musical style. "The history of jazz has always been in these basement rooms...dark little rooms in New York -- that's where the music was formed." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2001 15:40:44 -0800 From: "Kakki" Subject: RIP Papa John Phillips (NJC) I just heard on the news that singer-songwriter Papa John Phillips (Mamas and the Papas) passed away from heart failure this morning at UCLA Medical Center.
