Marcel, you are indeed seeing a side of this epidemic/crisis (i dont know how to best address it) that many osf us aren't seeing. although it won't affect any relatives of mine directly, there are friends of mine whose family business are going down the drain as we speak. at the moment my college is off, for the reading weeks, and i haven't seen these particular people in almost two weeks.. i got a txt msg form Aine, telling me of her misery these past few weeks. so i rang. she is happy that her geology field trips to Mayo have been cancelled, but hers is one of those families asked to quarantine the farm. not to leave the house. and all sorts of other restrictions involving the animals that i don't quite understand. her fathers is a small family run business. they have a comfortable life, but they rely on the whatever yield it is they get. regardless of how quickly the situation gets sorted, her family will have to make sacrifices in the year that follows. it is true that EU meats have been banned from the US. the Irish diplomats have apparently been trying to get an exemption from this ban considering that no confirmed cases have occured here. even if they succeed, how many americans can say that they will buy irish meat? i for one find the idea a little "icky". diseased or not, all this talk makes one wish to be a vegetarian. and all week, i've been living off mushrooms, broccolli, potatoes! for the sake of those directly affected by this crisis i do indeed hope it clears up quickly. Marcel, you are right, a prayer would be in order. I went to Madison for the first time in about 6 years, and made a point of hunting for the area where Joni shot the cover art of 'Hejira'. Lake Mendota still has ice cover, and the trees are bare, so it wasn't too hard. The landscape hasn't changed a whole lot, and from the view you still can't see buildings, even with Madison's high growth rate. (Its near a park area, and the ice fisherman where out just beyond the tree outcropping on the right of the cover.) Across the road and down a ways is the Dane County Coliseum (now bought by some big corp) where she performed Feb. 29th, 1976. Unfortunately when I got to the spot, it was A Sunny Sunday. Saturday was overcast and would have been more ethereal to view the scenery, (but I was too busy shopping on State Street!) It was cool to be there, just a week past the 25th anniversary. I had been listening to her 76 live shows to get the feeling of the time. If I would have had a camera, I'd have put on my skates and found a beret! I am begging all of you to reach deep into your pockets with this particular fundraiser. Jim is battling serious medical problems at this time, and is not able to work to the capacity that he has been able to in the past. It is a delicate subject as Jim feels readers so recently dealt with the loss of Wally only last year, and he doesn't want to drag everyone through another traumatic experience on JoniMitchell.com. Please, please be generous with your donations this year, and send them as soon as you are able. If you have giveaway items to donate to help motivate people, I would really appreciate that as well. Hi Garrett, The more I think about it, the more it seems that the media right now is working to scare people off. Guess I can see some value in discouraging people from traveling and potentially tracking the virus on their shoes and clothing all around the world. It's hard to weigh the cost of the devastation of the meat market against the devastation of the tourism market. The news here today is that the U.S. is now going to be inspecting and disinfecting the shoes, clothing and luggage of European travelers coming into the country. They've also now banned raw, frozen and live meat products coming from Europe. Seems to me that maybe they should try to start vaccinating to abate this, even if it is expensive to do that. The price of meat will skyrocket, at any rate. Some people, myself included, have to eat red meat for health reasons (I know the vegetarians may disagree with me, but this is true) so I might have to stick to prosciutto and salami (deemed safe) if I decide to travel Europe anytime soon. ;-) Sorry to hear about the U2 tickets and hope you get them. I have played folk music for all of the time Ive been playing music. Never actually ever considered myself a "rock" musician although I have played Rock at times and even wrote some "rock" songs. So what is "folk" music. Some may argue but heres my take. If you think about the word "folk". What does it connote or mean. Well first of all it is simple in structure. has to be because it is played of and by and for "the folk" or the people. An important aspect of it however in this context is that it is played "amongst" the folks. ie. early folkmusic was in essence the only available "news" report. In the old days it was played by quasi musicians, artisans or bards. Therefore it was simple in its production. But it was mor eoriented towards "whats happening" in the culture and at the time. Again it is music played amidst what copuld be called common settings. ie around a campfire or fireplace or gathering at a meal table. Telling stories. spreading good cheer amongst gatherings of "the folk". When Woody Guthrie began to use "folk music" to tell more quasi political themes (albeit some patriotic) the political left (late 1940's) which inhabited many of the common folk venues in America began to interpret the "news" or "story telling" aspect of the genre in whatb used to be a less political musical scheem. They used all the "folk music instruments" to broadcast their "stories" and hence the older distinction that used to apply ceased to apply and the lines that used to define "folk music" themes blurred until today when Hip Hop afficianados attribute a description of its values in precisely the same way that one used to describe "folk music". As such my personal view is that today it is an open question. Just as men wear earings (and dresses) and change the diapers folk mjusic as one commonly thinks of it is that music confined to the first half of the 20th centure and prior. Yeah I know many will argue vehemently agsint this view but then as i said Ive been playing the folk classics for many years (not alot lately) and much of the early 60s stuff was in fact folk music like Kingston Trio, PP&M , Bert jansch,l renbourn, etc and so forth. lastly I would tend to agree with Joni. I dont think anyone could ever have called her a hard core folk musician. I could discuss more if anyone is interested. marcel deste ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 22:53:33 EST From: Artheobeat@aol.com Subject: Re: Las Vegas Joni Chatroom: http://www.jmdl.com/chat.cfm NE JoniFest 2001: http://www.jmdl.com/jfne2001.cfm Websites: http://www.jmdl.com http://www.jonimitchell.com In a message dated 3/14/01 2:07:55 PM, cassysweet@msn.com writes: << a couple of the three Dixie Chicks (the lead singer is hugely pregnant and cannot travel for this show). >> WOW!
