NJC that is too bad Ashara, but still it is probably the best decison considering the circumstances. maybe next time, eh?:-) in order to prevent the introduction of foot and mouth disease into the republic, the Irish gvernment has taken some seemingly drastic actions. many regional sporting events have been cancelled or postponed, the st patricks festivities have been cancelled, a huge ad campaign has been launched. it seems so crazy that our government is treating it as an emergency, even more so than the British government, and we havent had any cases of it here. i was going to add yet, but shall refrain out of optimism. they are warning us not to go to the countryside, not to go to Northern Irealnd or Great Britain unless absolutely necessary, not to accept meat or dairy products from Northern Ireland of Great Britain. and so on. this will indeed cause huge finanacial problems for British agriculture. i must admit that our governments precautions have been prudent. it will, most likely at this rate, prevent the entry of the disease to Ireland and therefore prevent the deaths(and therefore prevent the loss of much money) of many thousands of animals. BUT, thousands of tourists and millions of tourists pounds will be lost instead. it was reported today that tourists from britain, usa, and japan in particular have cancelled planned visits here for St Patricks. teh news tells us that something like IR#40million will be the oppurtunity cost of saturday and sunday 17th and 18th of march. i just like to hear myself moan. sorry for the rant Ashara, and everyone else. i'm still reeling from the cancelling of Paddy's Day:-( GARRET ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2001 18:34:03 EST From: FMYFL@aol.com Subject: Re: njc doobee's /say-leen Miss Nancy Muller writes: << And like Ashara says about Jonifest: "Do be a Do-Bee, DON'T bring a Doobie!" ;~D >> LOL, that's right kids and just remember *Clean Up Time*. (but, i would be open to a proper explanation of what folk music entails.) Joni herself maintains that none of her albums are folk. 3)is LOTC more simple and rushed sounding than Clouds and STAS? i'm confused as to what he means rushed, but i certainly dont think it sounds more simple. It has now enetered the European continent in France and Germany. This can opnly mean that it will take a miracle for it to be contained. Products from other countries as well such as Holland have been now stopped in entering the US. If it comes here then entire stocks of animals will need to be exterminated here as well. I think that the macro problem is understood but the micro problem is not comprehended here in the US. When i went to france recently I was struck at how "micro" is their beef and sheep industry which can only mean something akin to the Irish Potato Famine Crop failure may be unfolding before our eyes. The small farmer and wrancher and their families who depend on their annual crops and harvests to survive (not prosper) may be severely hurt or even wiped out as this runs its course. The entire epidemic is terrible. I hope there might be some unexpected offset to the potential loss of tourism. Not that this is a good thing but maybe the airlines, hotels, etc. will have to slash their rates and that could potentially result in an influx of tourists and their dollars. The L.A. Times did quite a front page article about a week ago that talked in Apocalyptic terms regarding the situation in Britain. I was reading about the foot and mouth disease and although it is devastasting to the market, the livestock version of it does not transfer to humans. Humans can get another strain of foot and mouth but, according to the medical websites, it's very rare and very mild if one contracts it. Maybe the publicity machines need to get in gear to emphasize this and get those tourists back on the road again.
