Yeah, most of her stuff is pure cheese, but we all need a little cheese once in a while, don't we? Actually, I quite like a couple songs of hers, except for that frigging Titanic thing and that god-awful Barbara Steisand number. I even have a few Celine cds -- Well, my wife does, anyway. The only REALLY annoying thing is this "retirement" or whatever -- she can't stay out of the spotlight if she tried. However, I think we're all a little too hard on Celine and that creepy little man she's married to. I mean, we admit now that we dig Starland Vocal Band, so we'll be doing the same in 20 years with Celine. The one Canadian big name I DO hate is Bryan Adams - -- oh God, make him go away forever -- did y'all ever hear that "I wanna be your Underwear" song? Good Lord...... Anyhooo, just wanted to say that I don't have a problem with Celine -- but then again, in terms of the musical tastes on this list, I'm good ole white trash. Barbara, you would not *believe* how many people have typed in nearly the same two sentences. It's spooky. For those of us who "get it", it's one hell of a gift. But it's more than a gift. Somehow, it's an ability. The ability to get that juice out of Joni's songs is more like a personality trait that we inherited. It's like Joni's the key and some of us have the right tumblers. Okay, I'm babbling. Welcome home Barbara. Lama ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2001 23:06:12 -0500 From: "Louis Lynch" Subject: Hating Celine Hi all? Let's be respectable listers. We can hate the sing but not the singer! Hating Celine? Oh c'mon now! How can you hate her, she's only a pop singer? Did she do something mean and nasty to any of you? I never thought of hating someone just because I don't like their music, even Bryan Adams. Gloria Estefan's voice grates on me fiercely, and I'd probably strangle her if she started singing near me, but I wouldn't hate her. Sarah Brightman sings beautifully, but I can't stand watching her do it, but I don't hate her. I'm in a Jewel phase by the way. That young woman sure can sing. On her recent PBS special, she showed a stage presence very reminiscent of Joni. She must be a fan! Anyone else think Jewel is pretty talented? Regards, Harper Lou PS. Bienvenue Laurent! Is she an influence? Bob, I know you "rubbed elbows" with him, but was he there for the Joni? I'm trying to think of SOMETHING, it would be interesting to see a correlation between the two, two completely different music styles yet I like them both. I attended a Music Business seminar tonight (being invited by one of the power PHd's over there who wants me to do some lectures there, but I digress) and he introduced me to the speaker for the evening, Mr. Peter Spellman. He is the Director of Career Development at Berklee College of music. We were chatting about all sorts of things before the program started and we talked about jukebox and Jonatha coming on this week, and how I found about Jonatha thru the JoniList, and about the Jonifests, etc. I gloated that I was attending my fourth JoniFest in Boston this summer. He asked if that was right in Boston and I said no it's in Tospfield. "OH MY GAWD", he says, "THAT'S WHERE I LIVE!!!!!" He was very intrigued about the list and has promised to check it out. During the seminar a young lady asked if he thought that fan sites and lists had a big impact on the music biz. Boy did I give her an ear full. So we should have a new lister by the name of Ashly coming to inquire about that topic. So while I was out smooshing with the industry folk promoting jmdl.com and our independent artists, what were ya'll doing??? Well last week, the higher up people in Tampa decided that they changed their minds and they don't want to hire anymore people after all because its just "not busy enough" and they "don't want to spend any money on another employee". I had just started to settle in, filled out page after page of paperwork, and then all of the sudden was told they aren't going to hire me after all. It's just kind of a major shock really, having gone through two months without a job, finally finding something that seems to be really working, and then now having to start over again. I'll admit it has been pretty slow and sometimes there has been nothing to do but having gone through this whole process of getting acclimated and familiarized with everything and everyone and then the next day being told they called the whole thing off just seems rather callous and misleading. I'm able to continue as contract for a couple of weeks but at the same time need to be looking for something else so it is kind of awkward. I can't afford to spend another two months looking for a job again. But I sought out this opportunity originally so I'll just have to seek out another one. It's just so frustrating! Barbara, loved you post about discovering Joni. Jim is right that most of us have expressed the same exact feelings when we first posted to the list. We have a few other listmembers who live in or near the San Joaquin Valley. How far up are you? There are groups of us that get together and have little regional Jonifests or get-togethers a few times a year in both Northern and Southern California. How wonderful that you have a vineyard! I dug it out (oh how I wish they would make a CD burner with a turntable attached ;-) and the title is "Introducing the Doobie Brothers - Recorded in 1970 - Previously Unreleased." The songs are Be Yourself, Coke Can Changes, Blue Jay, Make It Easy, Quicksilver Princess, Runaround Ways, Pauper's Diary, and I'll Keep On Giving. It was recorded as a "demonstration recording" that caused Warner Borthers to sign them on the spot. Here's an excerpt from the liner notes that you might recall: "This is the band's true debut - the only recycled song here is "I'll Keep on Giving", which was rewritten around the melody and chord changes to become 'Another Park, Another Sunday' on 'What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits'....the Brothers were formed in the town of San Jose, where ex-Moby Grape and Jefferson Airplane drummer Skip Spence had provided the germ of the idea by introducing Johnston to Hartman." It goes one to compare the sound to some of the Grateful Dead and the vocals of Marty Balin of the Airplane. I can definitely hear those influences after not having cracked out this one for a long time.
