Ironically, I was watching the movie "Moonstruck" tonight on cable. There's one scene imparticular featuring a huge, luminescent full moon over the Manhattan skyline that piqued my lunar fascination. Made me wanna be where you are. Curiosity got the better of me, so I checked an online lunar calendar to see what the moon will be up to during David Lahm's upcoming NY Jonifest. Alas, it will be a waxing crescent...which is cool too. It's all good. Anyway, I do hope you and many other jmdlers will be attendance. I'm so looking forward to meeting you. I woke up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep, so I rewrote a little poem that has been a work-in-progress for awhile. I hope ya'll don't mind if I share it now: He follows shadows of the moon Not knowing wax from wane He hopes that rapture's coming soon He's boarded a slow train Resigned to be a traveler On long uncharted tracks He sees his soul as like the night, Mysterious and black. He wakes somtimes in a cold sweat Clutching dream diamonds in his fist He heart is full of deep regret (He wishes they were amethyst). Clinging like death to innocence He's tearful at a falling star And disbelieves the man who claims No sugar mountain anymore. - -Julius npimh: "When the moon hits the sky like a big pizza pie..." It stopped me in my tracks. What a beautiful sight tonight! It was as bright as a bare lightbulb. Much more interesting though with that face in the moon showing. It seemed so close and felt like a magnet pulling me as far east as I could walk because I imagined once I got to the river surely I'd be able to pluck it down, look it over closely, toss it around a little maybe, and then put it back so it would keep shining on y'all too. So how does the moon just hang there anyway? Oh, yeah, something about orbits and gravity and all that stuff, but that doesn't explain how tonight the moon looked so odd and dramatically alone as it lit up all the thick clouds around it that were sometimes pausing, but mostly flying past. Right on, Rick! As soon as I read this the song "Creeque Alley" came into my head. I think that the Mamas and the Papas were the first to use the expression in a song. I used to love to sing this one. For those not of hippie age, this was the autobiography of the group put to song. I've posted the lyrics below. By the way "Mitchie" refers to Michelle Phillips and not Joni Mitchie ;-) And for PC considerations the term "fat" was slang back then for making lots of money (but there is an obvious double entendre re Mama Cass) Kakki John and Mitchie were gettin' kinda itchy just to leave the folk music behind Zal and Denny workin' for a penny tryin' to get a fish on the line In a coffee house Sebastian sat ... and after every number they passed the hat McGuinn and McGuire just are gettin' higher in L.A. you know where that's at And no one's getting fat except Mama Cass. Zallie said 'Denny, you know there aren't many who can sing a song the way that you do' (Let's go South) Denny said 'Zallie, golly, don't you think that I wish I could play guitar like you' Zal, Denny and Sebastian sat (at the Night Owl) McGuinn and McGuire still are gettin' higher in L.A. you know where that's at And no one's getting fat except Mama Cass. When Cass was a Sophomore, planned to go to Swarthmore, But she changed her mind one day Standing on the turnpike, thumb out to hitchhike, Take her to New York right away When Denny met Cass he gave her love bumps Call John and Zal, and that was the Mugwumps McGuinn and McGuire couldn't get no higher but that's what they were aiming at And no one's getting fat except Mama Cass. Mugwumps , hi-jumps, low slumps, big bumps, don't you work as hard as you play Drink-up, break-up, everything is shake-up Guess it had to be that way Sebastian and Zal formed the Spoonful Michelle, John and Denny gettin' very tuneful McGuinn and McGuire just are catchin' fire in L.A. you know where that's at And everybody's gettin' fat except Mama Cass. Surely there's a game site you could both access and play a game or two together, whenever you choose. And if there's no such scrabble game yet, well, what a good idea for somebody to figure out how to do. And you can both play LOTC at the same time too, or whatever music you decide on. There is my fact for the day! Some group whose name I forget had a big hit with it in May-June 1965, too, which I remember from when I graduated the 8th grade. And that as well precedes Creeque Alley. "California Dreamin" was not that long after that, however, for a point of reference, and "Monday, Monday" hit it big as as single in the spring of 1966. And while we're at it, does anyone remember a mid- to late-'60s music show hosted by Lloyd Thaxton -- from LA, I think -- called 'Where It's At?' I'm pretty sure they used this song to open every episode. And to really come full circle, this show was where I saw the Mamas and the Papas for the first time, when they we first becoming famous. I remember it like it was 35 years ago. Regarding the list's discussion of Joni's grammar, I think her grammar is always perfect, whether it's correct or not. Joni's no slouch -- she chooses her words like a poet. When the woman in 'The Last Time I Saw Richard' says "Constantly in darkness, where's that at," Joni's choice of words tells us so much about this woman -- she's quick, witty, she speaks in a hip and slangy way, and her relationship to Richard has gone so far down the tubes, she's being cutting and sarcastic with him. How many other songwriters could accomplish so much with just six words? When this brilliant line came into Joni's head, I don't think she was too worried about dangling prepositions. ;-) But then again, I suppose they probably discuss correct capialzation on the k. d. laing and e. e. cummings lists!
