Everyone, right? If you're like me it smarts a bit. Makes me want to go whimpering to Ashara for hug therapy. I'm so sensitive. ;-) I got this new-fangled digital cable TV set-up recently...I get like 400 channels, man. Like 15 premium movie channels free for the first month. I like movies...I've been watching them like there's no tomorrow. Half-decent schlock that I'd never go see at the cinema...hrmpf. Point coming, I swear. Point is, when I heard about that movie "Down to You" coming out, that teenage demographic vehicle for Freddy Prinze's actor son, I mused here that the title might have been inspired by Joni's song...there was the sound of one hand clapping here on the jmdl. I imagined you all scoffing at me and the very idea. Well, I saw Doen to You last night and there was a scene where the girl lead was showing the Prinze character some paintings of album covers that she had painted herself into in place of the artist. On top of the stack: her face in place of Joni's on the cover of Clouds! See!? I'm not nuts! Well, maybe I am, but you can't prove it by this! Then I watched "200 Cigarettes" the movie. Pretty lame all in all, but still bearable if you're into pop culture. There was a Joni mention in a bar scene in that one! Weirder still, the guy who is the lead in "200 Cigs" is the same actor in another movie featuring JC...can't recall the actor's name or the movie, but in this one his character owns a record store and catches two boys shoplifting. What had they swiped? A joni disc! He chastises them saying something like you're dj-ing with Joni Mitchell? And the kids say something like, oh, just cause we're young we can't have taste? He lets them keep the disc. Anyone know the movie offhand? I'll look it up if you don't believe me. - -Julius, who will unabashedly take self-esteem boosts whereever he may find them. :-P ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Mar 2001 04:56:07 EST From: Gertus@aol.com Subject: Re: A Joni moment (London-style) Stevie Mitchell wrote:- >>>I just thought I'd share this Joni moment with you guys. She replied that it was a song about not needing a piece of paper . . . . My hand shot straight to Blue, and I said "My Old Man" is the track you want. The two staff members looked suitably impressed, and the young lady in question said "Thank you *so* much, I love you" (I'll pass out the airline barf bags in a moment). I think the songs on LOTC are by and large better and more ambitious than those on Clouds. The sound is freer. As Julius said, it's a sunny morning album, despite having a song called "Rainy Night House!" BUT I do love Clouds also. It's a cloudy day album, a little darker sounding, and you're curled up with a cup of tea listening to it. Joni's voice is more appealing on Clouds, IMO. In my youth, when people said they hated Joni Mitchell, it was the LOTC voice they hated. The height of the helium phase. In her early days she spoke of having two voices: one high, and one deep and husky. On LOTC she banished the latter. > Relayer211 writes: > > << I think "Clouds" is defiantly Joni's most underrated album.I > can't understand why some people don't like it.Joni's singing is > so pretty on it.The songs are deep and wonderful...overall it's a > better album then LOTC imo. >> > - ----------------------------------- Deb Messling "I like cats. (md) For all you B/N fans. I used to know a guy named Frankie M. who was an excellent guitar player. He had known Lindsey from way way back when they were both kids. Years ago now he told me Lindsey was into doing recording and engineering his own demos from the very beginning. So there are probably tons of B/N studio and live stuff that exists because Lindsey made sure of that. Thats the good news. The bad news is no one in the entire industry is more of a perfectionist as Lindsey's own self produced albums testify too. This would mean that he wouldnt consider anything from his early days ever to see the light of day. Thats my bet. B/N played tons of clubs in the San Jose area which is where FM found them. There werent alot of fan tapes made in those days because in the small clubs people arent there to get music necessarily (they are looking for luuuuuv) and the hand held recorder didnt exist like they do now. I worked with several great bands even in the 80's and I never saw anyone ever tape anything. I saw more people leave clubs holding underwear in their hands than I saw live music tapes. before that no one (except me of course) cared. I had to carry an old Wollensak with a power chord into places when I was makin' mine. I never saw B/N until fleetwood mac although I was told about them by Frankie. Lindsey and Stevie didnt evolve into their career slowly. They jumped right from the clubs to the major leagues. As I understand it. It's great to be back home after a wonderful trip to Deer Valley, Utah. I checked all over Salt Lake City for some dirt on Alison E., but she lived a clean life there. The Osmonds said nothing but good things about her :~) For myself, I looked everywhere for a good looking, financially secure, humorous, gay Mormon that liked Joni Mitchell, but no luck :( I missed watching the Grammy's, but heard that Joni and Vince both received an award. I also heard that Joni looked radiant as a presenter. Way to go Joan!!!! Upon my return to Ft. Myers, I had received two wonderful packages from JMDLer's. Thanks to Steve Polifka for a great Joni promo video, and more importantly Steve's own single of "Man From Mars". Excellent Steve! You are one talented musician. Also thanks to Mr. Muller for Joni "Covers and Contributions Vol. 14". I've only listened to it once, but I think it's as good as Vol. 13. That Lydia Van Dam is one hell of a singer, and Mark Murphy's beautiful voice shines on "Barnandgrill". I was also very impressed with Richard Isen, Will Taylor, Beth Orton, and Marian Hoiting Kwartet . Most of the artists did a great job with the Joni tunes, but I must admit even though I was raised listening to Stan Getz, he makes BSN sound like theme song to an old 60's comedy show. Anyway, thanks to all of you that contributed to Bob's project. I also hope that all of our friends in the Seattle area (Hi Mark) escaped any damage from the horrible earthquake. Make that me three. I do like the song. It's not my most favourite (what is? that depends on the day, the mood I'm in and so on), but I think it's a good song that makes some excellent points. Joni is musing aloud about injustice in the world - how a young Japanese girl could be so brutally raped by these soldiers, and then the case shrugged off by their general with a "boys-will-be-boys" kind of response ("They should have hired a hooker.") She then goes on to talk about friends (or former friends) repeating back to her a story someone else has told - to me, it doesn't matter if it's Jackson Brown or anyone else. It's slightly humourous, in a black-humour kind of way - "Freddie says that Juan says I think he's the devil." (Kind of a he-says/she-says thing). She dismisses this: calling this little creep "the devil" would be paying him too great a compliment ("What a lofty title for such a petty little tyrant!") (Aside: I just noticed the lyrics section of the jmdl says: "Freddie said that once, I think/ He's the devil/ What a lofty time/ For such a petty little tyrant" What's up with that?) I agree with Mark when he says the song deals with what it means to be *a man* ("what makes a man a man in these tough times?" The place is falling apart and being taken over by criminals (warlords and drug lords, lawyers and loansharks - poor lawyers get rapped again!); the earth is being raped; a young girl is raped; the ecology is being destroyed; the moon has been trampled. And no one apologizes for any of it. I don't find it disjointed at all, although it isn't as tight as some of Joni's lyrics can be. It's a bit more stream-of-consciousness, but it ends up at the same place - there's the same refrain: "Tireskids and teethmarks/ What happened to this place?/ Lawyers and loan sharks/ Are laying America to waste." And she ends up where she started: "The general offered no apologies..." And are you happy? Care to start a thread on this? How many are musicians for a living? How many are musicians but still work elsewhere? I've been wrestling with corporate America's ego for a month, since being laid off my fool-time job. After checking my corporate grooming in the glass darkly, I have gone to several interviews for positions seeking "motivated IT professionals with proven track records and good people skills." Is there a medicine that helps you stomach that kind of encounter? Beano and Lactaid together just don't have have strength to help prevent the "human resource protocol syndrome" anymore. I even cut off 24 inches of ponytail!!! For 20 years, I've worked in an office and played music on the side. Without a stitch of promotion, I've managed to book two or three good gigs, weddings or special events nearly every week. But it was a burnout of love. Now, I don't want to go back to work fool-time, especially for a company that doesn't even have enough imagination to have a name instead of an acronym. I'm considering taking a part-time advertising job that's creative, but it will pay an hourly rate of nearly half of what my salary level was. However, it will pay the mortgage and car payment, so I will only need to come up with enough money to keep me and my daughter alive. I'm ready to take in laundry (which is what my Berklee-trained brother called it when he started accepting guitar students) and actually start having faith in myself as a performer. Maybe those extra four hours a day will give me the time to finally work at promoting my music, time to possibly think of ways to sell my CDs, time to network with people with common interests instead of people sitting in the same Powerpoint presentation of that neverending strategic planning meeting, time to work on honing my music beyond Pachelbel's Canon in D for yet another bridal procession or background jazz piano for a dinner of doctors who really aren't listening, and maybe even time to wash the dishes from September-October 2000. (Nah, I'll just hide them in the clothes dryer a little longer.) Anyway, I see the list contains so many talented musical people, like Kate Bennett, Steve Dulson and Michael Paz. Is the muse a good sport about helping you all pay the car insurance on time? I've always justified keeping a desk job with the standard line, "I don't want to be a starving musician." But the indigestion of eating the food of nonspiritual labor is killing me. I'd love to be invited to play guest harp on a recording by a friend somewhere in Tulsa or San Luis Obispo, and actually be able to consider being able to take the time to do it! Anyway, I hope a few of you find this worthy of a thread.... Regards Harper Lou (Harpist for extreme hire) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Mar 2001 16:24:09 -0800 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: Musician survey, new thread -- NJC Harper Lou Here is my 2.5 cents for you - From all we have learned about you, you have talent, ability, versatility and lots of experience. I'd definitely say that now is the time to start making the music full time. You appear to work very hard at it, and that is important. You've also had years now to make connections and become known in your area. I have a friend who has always supported himself with his music. He is a well-known songwriter and several top artists have recorded his songs, but despite that, making the living week to week have never been easy. He works very hard, and even though he is well-known and respected in the songwriting world, he has never felt that playing a small club or bar for the tip jar is beneath him. He's still playing those places a few nights a week. He devotes a lot of energy to being involved in the local songwriting groups and NAS. He doesn't give lessons, but does do a bit of sales repping for a music software company on the side to bring in a little extra. I truly think you should go for it. Once you can devote your energies 100% to music many more doors will open up to you. And may one of your next big gigs be a Jonifest, please!! ;-) Wishing you all the best, Kakki NP: Joni in Paris '72 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Mar 2001 18:19:47 -0700 From: Les Irvin Subject: Larry LeBlanc Joniphiles - I was recently contacted by Larry LeBlanc, who was cruising the JMDL site and found one of his articles (written for Rolling Stone 30 years ago) in the database: http://www.jmdl.com/articles/docs/710304rs.cfm He kindly gave me his full permission (whew....) to use the article and sent along an interesting note that he asked that I pass along to all of you. I was at work in North Seattle when the quake hit. I was with another therapist and four patients, three of which jumped up and hid behind me (why, I don't know). It was quite a ride, but no damage was done to the clinic. The doc sent us all home later, and I'm happy to report I had no damage at home...just one overturned shot glass and one fallen book. My claim to fame (other than the photo in the gallery) is that I used to live a mile away from The Raven. But in those days, I was too young to see Joni and Chuck perform. My older brother did, though, and recalls how Chuck would be on stage playing the guitar, then Joni would enter via the audience, singing her way up to the stage. Hmmm..... I think some of this history is somewhat jumbled. Stevie and Lindsay did live on the penninsula (the richie Atherton area in Lindsay's case, Stevie was a baton twirler at Menlo-Atherton High, but her family moved around alot) and had a band called Fritz that played around the area and even opened for Janis Joplin. They desolved the band and went to LA to seek fame and fortune. Stevie waited tables to support the two, they met famed producer Ken Olsen and recorded the B/N album in his studio. The oft repeated story is that Mick Fleetwood was shopping for a studio and Ken Olsen played him their tape to demonstrate the sound of his facility. This was how the connection was made. I don't know if they were even doing shows at that point. Your point about Lindsay's obsessiveness about the quality of his work reducing the likelihood of any early stuff being released is supported by Stevie's statement that she would like to rerelease the Buckingham/Nicks album, but Lindsay continues to veto the idea. Maurice said: The only legitimate release I know of that is non-lp is of Buc-Nicks is the "Crying In The Night" U.S. single that has a very different guitar (slide) solo on it than the LP version Does anyone know the history behind this single version, is it an outtake , demo,or what? I know it is really quite an expensive single and hard to get with picture sleeve. I didn't know there was a picture sleeve. I have the single (50 cent flea market with jukebox strip). It is essentially a remix of the album version. Instead of starting with the crisp acoustic guitars of the album version, it starts with some aggressive electric guitar by Waddy Watchel (who later became an essential part of Stevie's solo carreer as band leader during her tours). I'm sure the thinking was to release something more rockin' for radio. The vocals and backing and everything are, as far as I can tell, the same on both versions. The flip side, curiously, is the solo acoustic instrumental "Stephanie". Further, even if Eminem does become yesterday's news, he will retire a millionaire having helped thousands of impressionable youths feel good about being mysoginistic homophobes. ...Yawn.. so what......
