["Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: NJC: Courtney Love takes on the major labels No Joni content, unfortunately, but I can't help but post the latest reason why Courtney Love continues to endear herself to me. And you thought Joni Mitchell and other artists like Aimee Mann had problems with the music industry! Taken from the news section of Hole's Web site: February 28, 2001 Hell Hath No Fury "I could end up being the music industry's worst nightmare: a smart gal with a fat bank account who is unafraid to go down in flames fighting for a principle," Courtney says on the front page of Wednesday's Los Angeles Times. Love will enter Los Angeles County Superior Court today for a hearing on the suit against Universal, which one lawyer says could "nail the lid shut on the coffin of the standard long-term recording contract" and radically change the nature of a business riddled with corruption and fraudulent practices. After refusing to settle in December, Courtney is prepared to take her case all the way to the Supreme Court if necessary. "There is no reason why Courtney can't win this case," says an observer. "If this goes to trial, it will be a jury that decides the facts. Not the industry." As Love readies for a fight to the finish, one industry analyst summed up the proceedings. "It boils down to a woman versus one of the largest corporations in the world. I'm putting my money on the woman." Personally, I can't wait to see how this case develops. The aforementioned Los Angeles Times article can be found on their site at the following URL: [http://www.latimes.com/business/updates/lat_love010228.htm] It's well worth a read, and it gives a lot of background on the fuss Courtney's about to make. Fye" Subject: When God made Canada (NJC) Too good not to share! - ----- Once upon a time in the Kingdom of Heaven, God went missing for six days. Eventually, Michael the archangel found him, resting on the seventh day. He inquired of God, "Where have you been?" God sighed a deep sigh of satisfaction and proudly pointed downwards through the clouds, "Look Michael, look what I've made." Archangel Michael looked puzzled and said, "What is it?" "It's a planet," replied God, "and I've put life on it. I'm going to call it Earth and it's going to be a great place of balance." "Balance?" inquired Michael, still confused. God explained, pointing to different parts of Earth, "For example, Northern Europe will be a place of great opportunity and wealth while Southern Europe is going to be poor, the Middle East over there will be a hot spot. Over there, I've placed a continent of white people and over there is a continent of black people." God continued, pointing to different countries. "This one will be extremely hot and arid while this one will be very cold and covered in ice." The Archangel, impressed by Gods work, then pointed to a large land mass in the top corner and asked, "What's that one?" "Ah," said God. "That's Canada, the most glorious place on Earth. There are beautiful mountains, lakes, rivers, streams and an exquisite coast-line. The people from Canada are going to be modest, intelligent and humorous and they're going to be found traveling the world. They'll be extremely sociable, hard-working and high achieving, and they will be known throughout the world as diplomats and carriers of peace. I'm also going to give them super-human, undefeatable ice hockey players who will be admired and feared by all who come across them. Michael gasped in wonder and admiration but then proclaimed. "What about balance, God? You said there will be balance!" God replied wisely. "Wait until you see the loud-mouth bastards I'm putting next to them." - ----- Lori in DC Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! I have always loved the song and IMHO it is a highlight of TTT. I am not a musician but I love the sound of the music. Thematically it is an examination of masculinity at the end of the twentieth century. The General's story and the story of Juan are both sides to the same story. The pomposity of men. The General dismisses the brutal rape as essentially "boys fun". Juan thinks so highly of himself he considers himself the devil. (A friend told me she thinks Freddie is Fred Walecki and Juan is Jackson Brown, Juan being Spanish for John or Jack. I am not sure I buy this theory but it is intriguing.) Then just when you think the song is going to be a complete bash of men the lyric turns empathetic - "snakes and snails and puppy tails are wagging in the wound beneath a trampled moon, posing the question - "what makes a man a man in these tough times?" The theme becomes universal and the question is left unanswered. This is just a thumbnail analysis, typing tires me quickly. There are many layers to the song which I might follow up on later. If I were to have a criticism I would say the buoyant, upbeat nature of the music doesn't seem to support the theme. peace, david NP - Peel Me A Grape, Paula West ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Mar 2001 08:51:39 -0800 From: jan gyn Subject: Re: Good Morning America transcript At 07:06 AM 3/1/01 -0500, Deb Messling wrote: >The JMDL article page has a transcript of Joni's 1998 appearance on Good >Morning America. Has Neil Young actually said anywhere that she was the inspiration behind the song? But didnt Zuma and HOSL come out almost at the same time in 1975, surely too close together for this to be the case? - ---- Ive never seen any credible evidence that this song is about Joni. Indeed , Johnny Rogan writes in his major biog Neil Young: Zero to Sixty (publ last yr) : " The songs subject was widely assumed to be Joni Mitchell, although this was most likely wishful thinking on the part of an over-imaginative critic. Beneath the insulting refrain lay the story of a girls inability to vanquish the past and start afresh". Joni Mitchell has shown an admirable ability to vanquish the past whether it was childhood illness, heartbreak or career setbacks -- as Neil Young would have known at that time anyway. And, yes, John as you say , the two albums were released very close together . I think the Stupid Girl/JM link is another one of those speculative whos that song about interpretations that start off as fiction yet end up being accepted as fact. JM herself has said of such misreadings of her own work : "Assumptions were made in interpreting the lyrics ... that this was about so-and-so ... all that nonsense that destroys the ability of the listener to identify with a song. I really don't have any Joni tunes that I don't find interesting, especially when taken in the context of her life at the time they were written and recorded - so I can't 'play' in the least favorite tune game. I can play in a most favorite game. The most magical 'canned' Joni to me (as compared to 'fresh' in the flesh) is the PWWAM DVD. She just looks so alive and comfortable in her skin during this performance. She radiates, buoyant, free. She looks joyous when dancing with her back up vocalist, and is just plain captivating during her 'topless knitting' story. And her voice - my god - just heavenly and moving. And her and the band's playing was marvelous, open and minimalist when appropriate - yet strong and gripping when the lyric and presentation called or it. Breathtaking when listened to in 5.1 digital surround sound. An epiphanal moment in time captured for eternity. Now that I have written this, I guess I do have a least favorite Joni - with the emphasis on FAVORITE - not 'least'. It would be the entire BSN CD. Not that it isn't beautiful it is - and I enjoy it for itself. The 'Joni' touch on the classics contained in BSN is very special. I'm glad she did it. It shows what a unique song stylist Joni is. As good as anybody doing classics IMHO. But I don't think this heavily orchestrated vehicle shows Joni, nor her original works that were recharted on BSN for orchestra, in their best light - - which is free, subtle, coy, charming, light, poignant, humorous, streamlined, spontaneous, 'at the helm', and for Joni personally, the mistress of all she surveys - like in PWWAM! An example of what I'm saying is the song Comes Love. On BSN it is pretty, no doubt, but Joni's emotion is somewhat overshadowed by the weight of the orchestra. But on PWWAM, 'Comes Love' goes straight to the soul, and leaves you speechless. The song does have an underlying theme & although it may contain some personal references that the rest of us can only guess at, it is not 'disjointed'. I happen to like it too. "snakes and snails and puppy tails are wagging in the > wound beneath a trampled moon, There's that reference to the moon again. In Willy she called it 'the conquered moon' and in Don't Interrupt the Sorrow the man says 'We walked on the moon, you be polite.' DAVID LAHM ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Mar 2001 01:23:47 -0500 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Steal This Track; NJC; Long As the Napster era threatens to come to a close, I've been stealing singles that I've always wanted. Some of these singles were made by one-hit wonder bands so I hesitate to spend $15 on a whole long-player. (That's how I justify it to myself although I realize it's just plain stealing.) So, in the spirit of spreading the word, here's what I've been enjoying. ============================ Red Ryder- "Lunatic Fringe" This one totally, totally rocks. It'll give you a contact high even if you've had a bad day. Like most highs though, it's addictive and habit-forming. And no, Virginia, I don't care one bit that the rhythm guitar is a total rip-off of "Another Brick In the Wall, Part 2". ========================= Frank Sinatra- "Under My Skin" Wow! This was after Mister Sinatra learned how to belt when he wanted to. He starts words off-pitch on purpose so he can sliiiiide into them and uses this trick judiciously and skillfully to build tension as the song progresses to a big, big finish. It's obvious that he listened to great jazz horn players for a very, very long time. This track begins as a controlled, normal version through the first 3 minutes, then the trombone solo goes OUT there and it sounds like the walls are blowing out and the weather is changing. Frank, scolding himself for falling in love again, goes, "DON'T YOU **KNOW** YOU FOOL?? AIN'T NO CHANCE TO WIN!! WHY NOT USE YOUR MENTALITY?? GET UP!! WAKE UP! TO REALITY. AND EACH TIME I DO JUST THE THOUGHT OF YOU MAKES ME STOP JUST BEFORE I BEGIN. ......... because.... I've got you...... under my skin. And I like you.... under my skin." If you love a track that starts one place and takes you somewhere else entirely, this is a fan-damn-tastic arrangement with a Master at the top of his game. Not every song has to include a hurricane AND a whisper but this one does. Way recommended. ================================================================ Pure Prairie League- "Amie (Fallin' In and Out Of Love With You)" It was hearing the reports of the Paz-produced, Mueller-sung, Mixon-solo'ed version at Ashara's last year that made me remember this one. For a while there Country and Rock were like roman candles crossing paths; each was on a different path but they passed closely and felt each other's light and it was an interesting period. If you like Southern Rock. Eagles, Ronstadt, Emmylou, Pure Prairie League, Lynard Skynard, and the mother of all Southern Rock bands: The Allman Brothers Band. Who wants to talk about Southern Rock? Is it Southern Rock when an LA band like Little Feat plays a New Orleans shuffle like "Mercenary Territory"? Nah..... If you decide to steal this track, er... I mean download it... be sure to get the one that's more than 6 minutes long. The shorter versions are like..... well, like coitus interruptus. Would you want HALF of "Stairway To Heaven"? The electric version of "Layla" without the piano solo? Me neither. ========================= Los Lobos- "La Bamba" Okay, I *know* it a cover but it's a perfect cover. The vocal is dead on- just the right edge to make you sit up straight and wonder, "Is he going out of control?" I'll be buying some Los Lobos!!! Where do I start? ========================= Richie Valens- "La Bamba" Again, I blame Paz for re-kindling my interest in this fun, fun, fun song. This is totally a perfect example of a garage band sound and it works! This is what rock and roll should sound like. Too bad that the version that I stole is in fake stereo, with Mr. Valens ping-ponging ridiculously. May he rest in peace. Richie Valens *HAD IT*. I just might have to buy some officially released stuff now. I knew I loved it _then_ but I wasn't so sure how well it would stand up. Which brings me to...... The Nightcrawlers- "Little Black Egg" ===================================== Well, I loved it when I was 15 or whatever. We were away from our suburban Columbus, Ohio life for a week at the beach on Long Island, near New York City. When I wasn't sailing a Sunfish, or collecting shells, or walking the boardwalk barefoot, or swimming with my (rarely seen) cousins, I was reveling in a New York City pop station. They were playing this song but I don't think it ever made it to the radio in Columbus. With the distance of all these years, I can see why. It's a weird little song but it's not funny enough to be a novelty song. Just odd. I must have heard it a couple of times way back then and had not made up my mind about it till now. Now I can let it go. Thanks Napster. It sucks as a song but it's a very powerful incantation of that summer. Most everything else has lost its power to do that for me because I've played it to death. ================================================= Dylan, McGuinn, Harrison, Young, Clapton, & Petty sing- "My Back Pages" Need I say more? ================================================= Neil Young and Chrissy Hynde rip up "All Along The Watchtower" If you don't nod your head to the beat, you're in a body cast. The Byrds- "Eight Miles High" ============================= Somewhat sheepishly, I must admit to not owning ANY Byrds. I must also get "Chestnut Mare" eventually. Did these guys ever really flesh out an album? (Donning my asbestos suit.) I mean, with Roger (Jim) McGuinn at the helm, they weren't exactly brimming over with singers, so how could they fire Crosby? I want to hear some stories about great Byrds albums and why I should I buy some. Kakki B., Kakki B., taaaaaalk to me! ================================================ John Williams & The London Philharmonic (I think) "Main Theme to Star Wars" It's fun. I chopped it off at 1 min 31 seconds though. ====================== Tom Petty- "Breakdown" Remember this? It builds like a Beatles hit. Two short verses, then...... "*****BAAAABEE*****!!! Breakdown, honey go ahead and give it to me." With that "baby" a star was born. The Rolling Stones- "Happy" =========================== By now everyone has made up their own minds about these guys, eh? For my part, this is nearly the beginning and end of my interest. Another great garage band track. I know Keith can't sing but it works! Stevie Wonder- "We Can Work It Out" =================================== God, I love this one. My old 45 of it is completely trashed. I have two of Mister Wonder's albums and need to get more. I heartily recommend "Original Musicquarium" and "Innervisions". Marcel- how did Stevie get the snare to sound like a swish and like a snap at the same time? Is it a partially open hi-hat overdub? And you know there may be more...... All the best, Lama PS- Question to the techies. If I have 200k/sec available at this end and the other guy has a DSL connection, why do I typically get mp3 swapping speeds of 7k/sec????? I always thought it was bullshit when I heard Napster users defend Napster by claiming that they have actually bought *more* music since they began to download. Now I get it. BTW, IMO, garage bands sound great on computer speakers. The whole vibe of garage rock is not about poetic words or virtuosity. It's about adrenaline. np: Expose- I'll Never Get Over You (Gettin' Over Me) on mp3, natch. This is sooo sad to me that I should never play it. It destroys me every time so I rarely play it.... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Mar 2001 22:31:11 -0800 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: Steal This Track; NJC; Long Jim lama wrote: ================================================================ > Rock bands: The Allman Brothers Band. You're just trying to rile me! ;-) Actually, I only really like the first three with Crosby. The later incarnations of the group, post-Crosby, while good albums, just don't have the same effect on me. (Now Marcel will get on me!) Get the remastered "Mr. Tambourine Man" on CD. It has some bonus and unreleased tracks and you can pick it up for a good price, especially through the record clubs. It's a masterpiece. The CSN bio by Dave Zimmer has a great section on Crosby's time in the Byrds. Crosby was a bit too wild for the conservative McGuinn, Hillman and Clark at the time - wanted to branch out creatively and get more psychedelic and stuff, plus you know how Croz was a renegade back then. There was some ego pulling and then the final straw was when he went off to play with Buffalo Springfield at Monterey Pop in '67. According to Crosby they all roared up to his house in their new Porsches and came in and yelled at him that he was fired. However, they later all laughed about it and Croz did a reunion album with them in 1973, the one that covers Joni's For Free. As I'm certain Nikki would say: "It's all good!" :-) I was going to reply to Paul that, while DED could be perceived as less inspired than Joni's other discs, it's still immeasurably better than 90% of last years releases. I'm bewildered that MOA and Shadows and Light aren't both heralded with the best live efforts of all time. Frampton Comes Alive, Rush: All The World's a Stage, Little Feat: Waiting for Columbus...these classics should be their company. Can I get a witness? On LOTC, if I may. I'm endeared to it because in my book it's the most inspired morning album ever conceived and recorded. How dearly I recall my college days, waking up in my lover's arms, snuggled in her canopied bed beneath her grandma's cloud-soft patchwork quilt, with morning sun beams colorfully refracting through dangling crystal prisms all over us...to our quiet delight. Michele would reach over and drop the needle on LOTC and "Morning Morgantown" would fill the new day air...followed by the so-sweet "For Free." Those precious moments became transcendent. We loved the rain and would spoon on the futons near the crackling fire absorbed by "Rainy Night House." I could go on and on on LOTC, with love. Somebody stop me!
