While it appears that this thread has negative connotations, oftentimes what happens is that people are led to a greater appreciation of that particular song. I posted not too long ago about not liking "Tea Leaf Prophecy", and if I remember correctly, *YOU* were one of the people who voiced your support for it. Even though I didn't bump it up into my Top 10, I didn't put it on my 'least favorite' list because now I can appreciate it more and I know that there are others that really dig it. Joni is one of a few of a handful of artists who have remained vital since they started. She has matured, and her work has reflected that maturity. She's in a great situation material-wise, I think...her ongoing battle with Myrtle over what's proper, her re-discovery of Kilauren, being a grandmother, a mother, and a daughter simultaneously, growing a love relationship in all those directions...I certainly hope she mines this sorta stuff as opposed to redoing her old songs with orchestra, but of course I'll accept gratefully whatever she gives. I'm just glad she's still giving. I think she's in a unique situation as a composer to write some really original work. A dubbed film is a ruined film. The original voice is always important. The actor's words, tone of voice, inflection, are a part of the movie whether I can understand the language or not. Acting involves the voice, and I want to hear that voice. A dubbed Crouching Tiger would have us looking at the actor's mouths with words that didn't match, as with every Godzilla film we saw in the 50s. So all those I spent learning to read paid off, I could read the subtitles! I don't believe that every movie made should be in my native language. That is a part of the universality of the cinematic, artistic experience. No way would I want to see any German or Italian or French or Russian or Czech opera in English either; the artist composed with intentionality in a particular language. Words cannot be translated exactly and something is always lost when we translate from the original. The fact that CTHD is a Chinese film, I was very willing to be open to the experience of accepting the movie on those terms for two hours and enter that Chinese world which was unknown to me. I think two hours of subtitles was a small price to pay for experiencing the artist's intent without imperialisticly making the artist use my own language, or making the artist rework their artistic offering to suit my own chauvinistic language limitations. Not to jump on you and I am sorry for that, but if anyone told me I'd go to a 2-hour Chinese language movie and be enthralled, I would have scoffed; that it is a 2-hour Chinese language movie and I was enthralled is a part of its intense charm! It's not that I don't think we can't be critical of our idol, but so many of the least favorite songs are ones that I too might once have put into my own 'least favorite' category, and then found that years later, eventuallly came through for me. Some of the songs that I used to skip over are now the ones I pay closest attention to, and find myself humming or singing to myself. The fact that I finally appreciate some of her songs 10, 20 or 30 years later is another reason I'm still in awe of Joni after all these years. Also, on the facelift thread, when I saw Joni up close in Hollywood in December 1999 at the opening of the exhibition of her paintings at LACE, she didn't look to have had any work done. I think when she appears on TV she has someone who knows how to do good TV makeup. She looked so great on Letterman, Rosie and the TNT tribute last year, and especially on the Grammys the other night. Marcel supposes I was may have been responsible for some or all of the production behind these CD's. The answer is : Some! Whereas I have provided most of the stage audio gear for the live shows the past three years, that's just the very beginning. In the process, most everyone pitches in and helps with all the aspects of 'puttin' on a show'. I always need to credit Mr. Paz without whose deep experience in things-audio we would never have the slightest chance to bring these numbers off. Eveybody 'roadied', basically. Some people roadied gas grills, even, but without the shrimp the music wouldn't have been the same! This year, everything was way complicated when we had to pick up the whole rig due to rain and drive it all 30 miles to the alternate rain-site. It was a little amazing, but I think we has sound up and running by 2 PM? (This, while not quite awake from the night before...) Then, there is the recording process. These CD's were all produced by the Ron Popiel School of Audio Production - "Set it, and forget it". The Cd's came from the board direct to DAT's. We had three machines running out of tape at different times but from Les Irvin's and Paz's sets I guess we caught almost everything. The sets were very nice, to say the least. We were also lucky again, engineering wise. Now to get from these DAT's to CD is another whole process, and I think I'll leave it to Les, in his characteristic humility, to provide the details. They're great! One regret I had this year (of a couple) was that we didn't manage to tape my band's set at Atty May's on Sunday. All I can say is that it was a highlight of my LIFE playing behind that fabulous that party that 'broke out'. You had to be there... I do show up occasionally on these tracks. I am on keyboard on some of these performances and that's about all I had in me this year what with other coverage and being quite ill on top of that. I was honored to play behind Ann and Leslie and Ashara. I also had a ball playing behind Victor Johnson's set at May's which was really rocking until some 'technical difficulties' ensued. But this is all to say: much credit due to ALL and principally among that all, LES!! for making this music see the light of day again. (already in planning for next year's Northeast Fest! We are looking to outsource the sound to PROFESSIONALS who will also be there to twiddle the knobs during sets and help with stage setting so that the musicians can do a little more *partying and *playing!. And.... we'll have decent monitors!) It's an offer of Joni material to all JMDLers, whether on the Joni-only list or the free-for-all list. - --- The audio tape trees are available *NOW*. Simon's tape trees include interviews and many, many live performances. There are audience recordings of Joni in her coffee house days. There are soundboard and TV recordings of Joni with James Taylor on the BBC (mono), and Joni at "A Day In the Garden" (stereo), etc, etc. Chuck's tree, "A Case Of You: The More Out Of Tune Voices, The Better" features lots of JMDLers doing their favorite Joni songs. So if you're already familiar with "Miles Of Aisles", "Shadows and Light", and "Painting With Words and Music", write me off-list so you can find out more about this ingenious Master of songwriting. An overview of these trees is available at www.jmdl.com/trading . How it works: Send me blank cassettes. I'll dub onto your cassettes with a high quality Nakamichi cassette deck, from very low generation tapes; I was an original branch for all 8 audio tape trees (so far!) so the sound quality is really, really nice. If you live within the USA or its territories, include return postage. If you don't live in the USA, I will bill you for the return postage (which will be more than you could ever imagine but it will still be cheap compared to buying a bootleg on eBay.) This is not a profit making situation so I really want to be reimbursed for the postage! I supply simple J-cars for the cassettes. Others on the List may be providing CDs of some or all of the Audio trees on CD (on a blanks and postage basis) so if you prefer cassettes, post a nice request. If you live in the UK, please post a request to the list specifically for a UK branch. Speaking for myself, I have to say that some of the most intense reactions I've had to movies were in subtitled films--Margarethe von Trotta's "Marianne and Julianne" and "Rosa Luxemburg," Bergman's "Persona" all leap to mind. Haven't found much in my native language to top them. Reading will never elicit a scream. Sure, you have to read the > subtitles, but you're still having a cinematic expereince, getting the visual > impact of the images on the screen-- Maybe the reason I am not bothered by subtitles in movies is that they're in movies. You're still in the theatre, still having the cinematic experience, still being bombarded with the visual--I don't find reading and absorbing the visual images as mutually exclusive. Vince Lavieri wrote > The actor's words, tone of voice, inflection, are a part of the movie whether I > can understand the language or not. Acting involves > the voice, and I want to hear that voice. > > A dubbed Crouching Tiger would have us looking at the actor's mouths with words > that didn't match, as with every Godzilla film we saw in the 50s. Those were my thoughts exactly. Dubbing would add a layer of falseness that just interferes with the director's vision, or whatever. I once watched "Das Boot" in German with subtitles, (loved it!) then watched the dubbed version the next day. Compared to the original German language version, the dubbed simply didn't do it for me-- I have a hard time suppressing my inner geek, and during the dubbed version couldn't stop imagining a Nazi sub manned by bare-chested Kung-Fu warriors whose lips moved but did not necessarily speak. Which is to say, compared to the original version, dubbing ruined it for me. I think it goes back to the whole mystery of art -- if there is vision and intensity and honesty and feeling and whatever other mysterious component exists in a work of art, it will work and communicate, subtitles or not. And there's the whole issue of the power inherent in the word, in the original language, as Vince notes: > No way would I want to see any German or Italian or French or Russian or Czech > opera in English either; the artist composed with intentionality in a particular > language. Words cannot be translated exactly and something is always lost when > we translate from the original. Garret wrote: > ang lee really deserved the BAFTA that Kate Winslet gave > him the other day.
