I dunno, maybe I'm getting old and cold and settled in my ways here. The Grammys, The Crummies, The Hammies. I bought 2 Against Nature when it arrived here and thought yeh ok. Not a patch on Aja, or Groucho, or The Nightfly. Donald Fagen's Kamakiriad was a nine out of ten in a respectable mag's estimation I remember. Nightfly a ten. I was listening to 2AN today and to be honest, I turned it off thinking I'm bored listening to this. There seemed to be so many recurring earlier riffs and bits that had been put across better in previous albums. Namely Donald Fagen's solo work. 2AN seems like the collection of songs he omitted from the TN and K albums. It won the best album+ACE- Something's afoot. There's an element of that feeling I have about Joni's work too. Productions seem more stretched out, clinically polished, emotionally diluted, less arty more farting around in the studio by other people - ish. California or Sex Kills? I read recently that Lennon was pissed off at George Martin coz his songs were never given the production attention that McCartney's were. Ho+ACE- There is a doG. I often wonder if I'd never heard Joni before 1980, if I'd be the least bit interested in any of her albums thereafter. If WTRF had been her first album would I have been at all interested in purchasing subsequent ones? I buy all her albums out of loyalty for the wonderful early songs she heavenly sent us, as I do with Steely Dan, George Michael, Sting. CSN and The Rolling Stones I did give up on a long time ago. Even that Beatles one, now what was it called? Free as a Bird. Can you sing it all the way through note for note like Day Tripper? These guys just ain't got the edge they used to have. A minor to A major to A 7th. Don McLean said all in the day the music died which was circa 1970. Art for art's sake, a pretence of music for money's sake. James Brown's Sex Machine or Dick'ead Martin's She Bangs? Music today is pornographic. Rock and roll was a form of rebellion. Now it's a form of bullion. Hi Patrick, Yes, you're right..I do like Radiohead...quite a lot, in fact. Creep was the first hit of any great magnitude for them here, although only after it had been a US Top 40 success. I think the song made them feel a bit sitgmatised as part of the "loser" college-band angst scene, and they distanced themselves from it pretty quickly. Their next album, The Bends (1995), was the one which really established them as a genuine force, both artistically and commercially. It's a marvellous record, and still one of my all-time favourites. OK Computer built on the promise of The Bends, although I'm perhaps in the minority for still preferring The Bends over OK Computer. Then, of course, came Kid A. Hmmmm. Not sure exactly what I make of this one, even after almost 6 months, but it's ambitious if nothing else. It is also essential that you have excellent stereo gear to appreciate the full measure of the genius at play. Donald and Walter are audiophiles, and they mix their delicate, soulful concoctions with the assumption that those listening will have the 'hardware' necessary to extract the true and whole essence of their creations. It took four 'play-throughs' for me to find the 'way into' this, their newest collection. But once in - I love it!! But that's the other thing about the Dan's work; like fine wine - it may not grab you initially the way a more aggressive, overflavored vino might - but long after your palate grows weary of the 'bolder bite' - the fine wine, like vintage Dan (and 2AN will become vintage), will continue to warm your spirits and move your soul, growing in its appeal as time goes by. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Feb 2001 11:53:49 EST From: RK1THXguy@aol.com Subject: Re: JMDL Digest V2001 #91 In a message dated 2/24/01 1:28:35 AM, les@jmdl.com writes: << Thanks Rose for pointing out George's birthday... he was always my favorite Beatle >> YEAH!! Violence in the media gets the blame for all sorts of nasty things, and I must admit i don't quite buy it. Rock music in particular got a lot of press in the '80's for supposedly inciting people to violence. There was a case in Wisconsin, i think, where a teenager who shot his parents had been listening to a Judas Priest record, or something, and the music was blamed for inciting this violence! Please! I spent my formative years listening to the Ramones, and never have I "beat on the brat with a baseball bat". I don't think is's so much an issue of responsibility, as Trey Ellett claimes, as much as it is being able to differentiate fantasy from reality. Rock lyrics are not intended to be primers on how to conduct our lives. Neither are most films or tv shows. Any sensible person should realize this. Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Yep. What's up with that? Who determines who is a "genius" and who is merely "offensive?" Record sales sure don't tell the story. Recently Mary and I were listening to Led Zep's fourth LP (on CD), and I commented to Mary that (at age 42) I think I can now understand my parents' concern at overhearing me play that (and similar) music in my teenaged room, night after night (after night). And then I thought, "my god." To paraphrase Joni: "We sound like our mothers did now, when we were those kids' age ..." (And remember: Nothing lasts for long --) The Academy prez (what's his name?) who (imho) spoke so eloquently about Eminem and the entire controversy made a good point: most young people live VICARIOUSLY through music. Yes, some songs MAY inspire someone to believe their prejudices are being sanctioned, or to carry out a heinous crime. However, there will always be "sick" people whose ultimate act is waiting to be set off by something. Part of Charles Manson's justification was "Helter Skelter." Look at how long ago that happened, and now most everyone agrees that The Beatles' music was pretty tame. I think Eminem is a performance artist and perhaps a chronicler of our times -- or of his own experiences and fantasies. His use of hateful words and his descriptions of terrible acts are no more threatening than a Stephen King novel. Fer chrissakes, even TONY BENNETT supports Eminem's right to say, write, and sing what he wants. And thank goodness for that! Because ... what's the alternative? Lori near DC ~ Yahoo! This is somewhat of a generalization, but I believe it to be mostly true. I remember reading about that Judas Priest case. Rob Halford and co. were hauled into court, and the lawyers laughed all the way to the bank and tried to convince a jury that listening to JP made these kids commit suicide. Neither are most films or tv > shows. Any sensible person should realize this. Rock music doesn't magically control people and force them to do things they wouldn't normally do. However, music, films, and TV does influence how you perceive yourself, others, and the world. If they didn't there wouldn't be any point in creating anything. They can influence you in the same way a friend, a parent, or a mentor can. Especially children, who are much more impressionable. Anything you watch or see changes you whether or not you are aware of it. I think it's much more complicated than simply distinguishing fantasy from reality because reality can be whatever you imagine, whatever you want. There is no set reality. The rapist who attacks a woman, rapes and kills her has just created a reality. A young child who shoots his friend with a gun has just created a reality. For him, guns are not longer part of a fantasy but have altered his life and changed him forever. Music, films and TV, reflect the world but they also shape it. Young children haven't developed the same thinking process that adults have. They can't see the consequences of their actions. To directly place blame for someone's actions on a group like Judas Priest truly is ridiculous and extreme. But to say that music, films, and TV do not influence and shape people is extreme as well and irresponsible. I think there is a very thin line between what is real and what is imaginary. We create the world we live in and we create these reflections of it and I think it is impossible to say where reality ends and fantasy begins. There is no simple answer. I choose not to listen to Emimem because I do not want the images he creates in my head. Children aren't always able to make those decisions. I think we are responsible, parents especially, for how children are shaped and how they develop, now more than ever. Always glad to see another lister who peppers their conversation with "Y'all". I'm in South Carolina myself... The tape & CD trees were set up to distribute rare interviews, concerts, etc. Though we don't have anything going right now (except for Covers & Jonifest 2000 CD's), all of the previously treed material is available to newbies such as yourself. If you're interested, contact me privately and I'll hook you up. As for E-bay, BE CERTAIN that you don't fall for any of the Joni concerts & CD's that they sell there. I guarantee you I have everything you'll see there, and will set you up for the costs of blank media & postage. It gripes my butt to see the Second Fret sets going for $45 a set. Anyway, I got off on a tangent...I too saw Joni at Chastain, we had a crowd of a dozen or so that met and went together. It was a great show. I've taken the Nikon to several camera shops for repair and tune-up but none of them will touch it because they are afraid of liability if they mess it up. A few years back a former boyfriend accidently dropped it on the street in Tijuana (arghhhh!) so it is also a little bent up, but still working. After all that, I only bring it out on special occasions. I took some incredible street shots at the Democratic Convention last summer. A couple of professional photogs there spotted my camera from far away and came running over to look at it. The photos it takes are astounding. I think Henry Diltz uses one, too.
