Terry ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Feb 2001 09:53:24 EST From: PMcfad@aol.com Subject: m&m thread - njc from what i've read on the eminem thread, artists associated with the grammys are afraid to speak their mind for fear of having judgment come against them down the road. in other words, no one wants to cast stones, even if they don't like what he says. my take on m&m is that he is a very talented and dynamic person who is also very limited in his social experience and very immature. those two limitations have him singing or rapping about the things he does. it's his talent people really see, even through his ugly subject matter. i think he could really do better if he grew up. as for elton, one article posted to the list implied that he was performing with him to help his own career. i find that hard to believe. i think elton, even on a weak day, would think his career has done pretty well with or without m&m in his life. my guess is it was his way of trying to rise above. say something to the world like...look, i don't like what he says but i see his talent and i'm not given to hate just because he's stupid. that would be more my guess as to why elton sang with him. keep in mind, elton sings with a lot of people and not all of them are top notch performers. he seems to go where he wants to. for me, the real problem with eminem is that he leads others to hate. i think he's a smart guy and probably doesn't have as much hate inside as he likes people to think, but i think alot of his fans don't know any better and that is unfortunate. patrick np. emmylou - one big love - a very nice song. this whole album has a soft substraight of rock drive that is very very subtle but motivating. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Feb 2001 09:14:40 -0800 From: "Susan Guzzi" Subject: RE:Joni & Carlos Santana presenting the award Congratulations Joni and Vince! Her dress was great - the colors and look ... and did you notice the shoes of gold /yellow to match the green/goldish dress. Although the banter between her & Carols, written by someone else, did not go too smoothly. They also did not overburden themselves with nervousness over it's flow. At least anymore than Shelby Lynne and Sheryl Crow did after their number. Waiter please may I have some of what Ms. Lynne is having? Besides her tattoo, we got a glimpse of her we may never have expected - WOW! Happy for her victory but haven't her and Sisqo been around longer than this past year? 'kid a' was the first one i picked up because of clark and slut. then i got 'ok computer' because of this college kid i know. i still think that's the best one i have. then i got 'the bends' which is really good too only not as good as 'ok computer'. then i picked up 'pablo honey' over christmas and i finally heard this song ..creep. anyway, i've read up on them and this song was a major hit in the uk in like 1993 and i've never ever heard of it. i'm wondering if the uk people like or dislike radiohead. i'd be hard pressed to believe that jason does not like them. they might be too harsh for colin's tastes..lots of guitar crunch. i also see that a lot of their stuff is not as available in the usa. now, this song creep is really creepy. thom yorke has a really creepy voice and the thing comes on soflty and then has these two eruptions or explosions...that go ....BOOOSHH.....BOOOSHH.... you can sort of tell they're guitar sounds but they really jump out of the speaker and cut you to the bone. then the full chord comes in and the song explodes. the BOOOSHHs come in like pearl jam jumping into nirvana unplugged. but what's really cool is where the BOOOSHH's come in. so i'm going to insert them in the first verse of the lyrics. After one-half hour watching this program I could take no more and had to go to my room and listen to Mark Knopfler's "Sailing to Philadelphia" which I just bought a couple days ago and love. Yes I love music, but the Grammy's -- Forget It! I was with Joni in spirit though and so glad she won-- maybe it will be part of a Video Tree someday?? By the way I wonder why Mark Knopfler's album was not nominated for any major awards--it is such an excellent record, imo. It seems to have been ignored all around--though I have been hearing "What it is" on the radio lately. I was glad to hear that U2 won. I was never a huge fan of their's, but I think ATYCLB is a fantastic, mature pop/rock album, my favorite of last year and I think the best they've ever made. One thing I like is the stream of positivism that comes across in their lyrics now. It is really much easier to write a sad, melancholy melody that touches peoples souls than it is to write a happy positive song without sounding sappy and cornball. In that way "It's a Beautiful Day" is a triumph, and strangely courageous in today's rock world. And "New York" is the best song about the bad apple since Lou Reed's "Dirty Boulevard". I would be interested to know what Michael Paz and DK think about this, because they are so involved in the music industry. BTW Joni Mitchell went to Cuba a few years ago -- I wonder if Gloria Estefan and will try to get her music banned in the US. I guess a national health care program, lunch programs for children, pre-natal care for poor women, and housing for the homeless must take a back-seat as national priorities because those fat-ass confederate-white boy-fraternity brother republicans and the right wing Cuban "exile" industry have to persecute Ry Cooder for making the world aware of incredible Cuban music with the Buena Vista Social Club! Apparently the schoolboy brat republicans are so pissed off that Ry Cooder gave Hillary Clinton a campaign contribution, that they're now gearing up to persecute him. The Clinton administration went to bat for Cooder with the State Department and Treasury, and now republicans are targeting him! Please pass this on to all of your friends in the music industry! [short article:] It's all well and good to mobilize the powers of a great nation against the evil of the Buena Vista Social Club (oh? you haven't heard?), but just where was the Bush administration tonight to protect us from these four musicians from the evil land of Teheran? Where, in fact, was security last week when the RUSSIAN National Orchestra performed in the same hall?! That's stupid, you say. Who would prevent Chinese, Russian, Iranian artists from performing today -- right? So how does the administration explain its move against Ry Cooder, who found, promoted and made the elderly Cuban musicians of the Social Club into the international treasure they have become? Yes, the new administration is dusting off the 40-year-old Trading with the Enemy Act to deal with Cooder, who -- gasp! -- apparently paid for tickets on the Cuban airline. Cooder's attorney says the problem is the guitarist's contribution to Hillary Clinton's Senate campaign, interpreted as a payoff for the Clinton administration's urging of the State Department to issue Cooder visas for his visits to Cuba and urging the US Treasury to allow royalty-sharing with the Cuban musicians, who are in their 70s and 80s -- a clear and present danger to the Republic. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Feb 2001 11:47:09 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Shelby NJC <> Plus she was good and sloppy drunk, and the two are always a GREAT combination! ;~) No punches, al...you're cool to dig what you will...I DID find it funny (as did she) that after 13 years & 6 albums she won the Best New Artist award. My lasting impression of the Grammy's is a fantasy one. There is Joni up on the stage with Carlos, probably wondering why the hell she was here in the first place. Carlos tears open the envelope to see who won record of the year, but instead of U2 winning, the Grammy goes to Destiny's Child for Say My Name. Unable to speak, Carlos hands the envelope to Joni, who immediately breaks out into one of those famous laughs of hers. Joni and Carlos then break into a spontaneous accapella version of the Marvin Gaye classic "What's goin on?" Security is finally brought to the stage, where Joni is forced to announce the winner. The half naked trio jiggles up to the podium, and just as Joni is about to hand them the award, she let's go of it, and it crashes to the floor. Sensationalisim appears to be taking the place of objective journalism. As someone who has dabbled in press releases, both for an org I used to work for, & for myself, it is very very difficult to get the attention of the media without a really good story. However, these days it seems like a good story translates into something extreme, shocking, horrible. These days, the more horrific you are, the better chance you have at getting noticed. Which brings me to Elton Johns suit last night at the Grammys. Now, there is the real horror! Absolutely. What bothers me is not Eminem & his creativity but those behind his promotions. Seeing Eminem & hearing him live for the first time, my intial impression is that I can understand how kids are intrigued by him- it s white kid rap, easier to understand & it is very hooky. I was digusted, yet not suprised, by the speech given by the pres of the grammy org & his attempt to justify freedom of artistic expression saying that music is a reflection of the times & certain lifestyles that many of us would otherwise not be aware of (cant remember his exact words but this is what I heard him saying). He missed 50% of what music is, as it is both a reflection & an influence on our thought & our culture. To believe otherwise is to conveniently abdicate any responsibility for what you are putting out. In my opinion this whole issue concerning artistic freedom is only sidetracking what I believe to be the real issue which is SO NOT about censorship. It is about who & what the record company chooses to promote and why. Promotion equals sales. Targeting young kids with stuff that is age-inappropriate because it will sell. Watching the grammys this year, I came away with the feeling that it was a reflection of the most boring & uninteresting era of music I have ever experienced. So boring that this big Eminem & Elton controversy was the biggest thing out there & it wasnt even about the music anymore. Many of the presenters were tv sitcom characters (on CBS?)& made the whole event to be more of a marketing plan than a true reflection of the world of music. How sad. Sad because there is so much incredible music out there! Where it really hit me was Song of the Year which is my favorite category. As much as I haved loved some of U2s songs, the song they won with was so average at best. To be fair, I havent heard the whole record yet, but I hear it is good... Maybe this is all hitting me because I just spent a weekend surrounded by some of the most incredible music & songwriters I have ever experienced in one place. More about that later but to me watching the grammys after experiencing what to me felt like the heart & soul of the music world, was like going back to watching a b&w tv after seeing a movie in color. ******************************************** Kate Bennett sponsored by Polysonics www.polysonics.com hear the music at: www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/ www.katebennett.com www.cdbaby.com/katebennett www.amazon.com ******************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Feb 2001 16:57:26 -0500 From: "Christopher J. Last night's appearence only firmed this up, as she told me Joni looked great, but undoubtedly 'pinched'. It's not as though we're all there, seeing JM going about her day...scratching her ass, blowing her nose, etc. And so, it's entirely possible Mom's correct (she's a little fixated right now, having recently decided she should have had a lift years ago, and now she thinks it's too late). Kate, I think all of the nominees for Song of the Year were weak this year. As far as what song I heard most often, most everywhere, was the Grammy winner for Best Dance Song, "Who Let the Dogs Out." I've heard a lot of versions, its catchy, it has a great beat, and you can dance to it... But of the songs this past year, what was the Song of the Year? What was the one song that transcended all the other new songs? I hope people will post on this since I can't think of any song that really stood out for me except "Who Let the Dogs Out", "Higher" by Creed, and "Matthew Mathers" which is about as varied as one can get... and I may toss in "Oops, I Did It Again."
