Also, the longer you do it, the harder it gets. And if you've got an "addictive" or as Jim says, "compulsive" personality, it does become even harder. I'd be willing to lay a bet that when Joni IS painting, or concentrating hard, she isn't smoking much at all. But as soon as she stops and relaxes - that's the first thing she reaches for. Obviously I'm not anywhere near the talent Joni is (duh!), but I do have that kind of "compulsive" personality, and when I get fixed on doing something, that's all I think about - could be 1 hour, could be 16 - but when it's done, that little packet is the first thing I reach for! Having said that, though, it's hard to keep that kind of compulsive energy going for a couple of weeks, ie. long enough to break the habit! I knew nothing of Joni's music publishing company back then but the info I do have is that, among the various stuff concerning Joni that I had laying around the office back then... her pub-stills, xerox copies of articles about her that she gave me to use for advertising, her self-written bio, a handwritten set-list complete with correlating tunings marked by each song which she left in the dressing room, I also had 'songsheets'/sheetmusic for UFG and TCG and at the bottom of both pages was the copyright tag: ") 1967 GANDALF PUBLISHING CO. Words and Music by Joni Mitchell" exactly like it is on wally's site for these other songs... this would indicate to me that he may have had actual sheet music to refer to, which, I believe, Joni faithfully had made for each and every song she wrote back in those days, one at a time. (now THAT would be a collectable! where wally would have got a hold of them is beyond me) anyway, that's my best guess... :o) cheers, pat ps - it's also interesting to note that, while most are copyrighted to Gandalf, some (at least one... Works this large are seldom all bad or all good; I dug the archival footage (although wished it hadn't been so often interrupted by the precious-voiced narrator or one of the ubiquitous talking heads; very few complete performances). And certainly Armstrong, Ellington, et al are more than worthy of this scale of attention. But the documentary was not titled "JAZZ: 1900-1960" it was simply titled "JAZZ," and the artificial stricture of this rewritten history was a direct result of the reactionary attitude of its senior creative consultant. - -Fred Simon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 17:28:40 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: triple albums NJC <> Hey, that's a good call, Tyler! NJC Well it is a tough subject but hiding information does no good either, IMHO. I feel it is best to show the internet sites for the good of the masses rather than to hide it from the minority who may allow the hate to manifest itself into some sort of bad behavior. As teachers or parents or mentors we should be looking to create heroes, good citizens, to stir compassion, to create the common threads to show right from wrong. By allowing young adults - teens to see this may help lift a hero, we can not continually hide in the house while the thieves rule the streets! Also, this may give the teachers a chance to observe some early bad behavior in the class. Keeping an observant eye open may alert us to potential dangers that may not have been made visible until it was too late. I also remember being quite the little militant when I was 12 or 13, reading everyone the riot act on my political perspectives. Proudly voted "Most Radical Student" of my Senior class (1975) at 17 years old! And finally, being left of center, I don't believe in censorship. I believe it creates a hunger for the very thing you are trying to keep undercover. Let freedom ring! How did that song go "Freedom isn't free, you've got to pay a price, you've got to sacrifice for your liberty." Ron wrote: Subject: FWIW NJC For what it's worth, on Eminem and the Grammies Gays Frustrated by Eminem Updated 12:19 PM ET February 17, 2001 By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY, AP Music Writer NEW YORK (AP) - When gay college student Matthew Shepard was beaten to death three years ago, Elton John spoke eloquently about the need to eradicate hatred and discrimination against homosexuals. "When I fly over America on my broomstick, as I often do a lot, I get to feeling what a big country this is - it's big enough for everyone," he said at an anniversary observance of Shepard's death in 1999. "And despite all the progress that has been made in rights and tolerance, we are still living in a world of hate." Two years later, John has outraged many in the gay community by saying he will take the stage at the Grammy Awards ceremony Wednesday with Eminem - the rapper whose album is riddled with derisive or violent references to "fags." To activists' added frustration, there also has been little interest among other celebrities - gay or straight - in condemning Eminem. "Overwhelmingly, artists have been very silent on this," said Scott Seomin, spokesman for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). "We're hearing neutrality, and 'Off the record, Scott, I'm really horrified by Eminem's lyrics, but I can't risk speaking publicly against him."' Worse, he said, musicians from Sheryl Crow to Wyclef Jean have described Eminem's album as one of their favorites. Even Melissa Etheridge, the lesbian singer and outspoken proponent of gay rights, has declined to criticize him, describing Eminem as talented while acknowledging that his words were hurtful. Etheridge declined to comment to The Associated Press. Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP" has been nominated for the Grammys' highest honor, album of the year, and he is also nominated in three rap categories. He has said his lyrics should not be taken literally. "I think that Elton John, I think he gets it," Eminem said backstage during a concert last month. "Because the kids ... they are taking my music for what it's worth, you know what I mean? They're taking it with a ... grain of salt." Eminem's lyrics call gays "sick" and joke about stabbing them. In the song "Criminal," he raps: "My words are like a dagger with a jagged edge/ That'll stab you in the head/ whether you're a fag or lez/ Or the homosex, hermaph or a trans-a-vest/ Pants or dress - hate fags? The answer's `yes'." Women's groups also have criticized the rapper for violent lyrics: One song depicts the murder of his wife, Kim, and another mentions raping his mother. Eminem's spokesman, Dennis Dennehy, said the music industry has not flogged Eminem because "Artists are tuned to artistic expression, and I don't think any of them would favor stifling that." One of the few gay artists who has voiced disdain for Eminem is Boy George, whose gender-bending ways with the band Culture Club pushed the boundaries in the 1980s. "Nobody wants to sort of battle against success. It's one of those things; if you slag him off, you on the one hand will appear bitter, and on the other hand you will appear uncool," George said. "If Pol Pot had a successful record, people would probably be running around him as well." He accused John of performing with Eminem simply to bolster his own hipness. "Eminem is a really cool young artist, and Elton I guess feels it's good for his career. I don't think it's anything deeper than that," he said. "The thing is, Elton John is fine, Elton John is a multimillionaire - - Elton John lives in a bubble," George said. "But what about all the little kids who live in the projects, the effeminate boys or lesbians and gays out there in the real world, getting beat up? What about people like Matthew Shepard? They don't live in that bubble." John has said he does not believe Eminem is hateful. "I'm a big fan of his music, and I said I would be delighted to" perform with him, the British superstar told the Los Angeles Times. "If I thought for one minute that he was (hateful), I wouldn't do it." When Eminem's Grammy nominations were announced last month, Recording Academy President Michael Greene defended artists' right "to say things that anger people." He called Eminem's lyrics "truly some of the most repugnant things that we've heard recorded this year," but added: "He hates everybody. He hates himself. He uses the microphone as a therapist most of the time and doesn't edit himself." Gay activists plan to picket the awards ceremony. George supports the rally, but wonders whether attention paid to Eminem isn't counterproductive. "I think sort of blacklisting him is just as bad," he said. "The more people moan about him being there, the more people moan about what he's saying, the more records he seems to sell." --- On the Net: Eminem: http://www.interscope.com GLAAD: http://www.glaad.org Grammys: http://www.grammy.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 17:22:34 -0500 From: "cassy" Subject: Analysis of the Blues (NJC) - Humor Analysis of the Blues 1. Most Blues begin, "Woke up this morning." 2. " I got a good woman", is a bad way to begin the Blues, 'less you stick something nasty in the next line, like " I got a good woman, with the meanest face in town." 3. The Blues is simple. After you get the first line right, repeat it. Then find something that rhymes .... sort of: "Got a good woman - with the meanest face in town. Got teeth like Margaret Thatcher - and she weigh 500 pound." 4. The Blues is not about choice. You stuck in a ditch, you stuck in a ditch; ain't no way out. 5. Blues cars: Chevys and Cadillacs and broken-down trucks. Blues don't travel in Volvos, BMWs, or Sport Utility Vehicles. Most Blues transportation is a Greyhound bus or a southbound train. Jet aircraft an' state-sponsored motor pools ain't even in the running. Walkin' plays a major part in the Blues lifestyle. So does fixin' to die. 6. Teenagers can't sing the Blues. They ain't fixin' to die yet. Adults sing the Blues. In Blues, "adulthood" means being old enough to get the electric chair if you shoot a man in Memphis. 7. Blues can take place in Chicago but not in Hawaii or any place in Canada. Hard times in Minneapolis or Tucson is just depression, baby. Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City are still the best places to have the Blues. You cannot have the blues in any place that don't get rain. 8. A man with male pattern baldness ain't the Blues. A woman with male pattern baldness is. Breaking your leg cuz you skiing is not the Blues. Breaking your leg cuz an alligator be chomping on it is. 9. You can't have no Blues in an office or a shopping mall. The lighting is wrong. Go outside to the parking lot or sit by the dumpster. 10. Good places for the Blues: a. highway b. jailhouse c. empty bed d. bottom of a whiskey glass Bad places: a. Nordstrom's b. gallery openings c. Ivy League institutions d. golf courses 11. No one will believe it's the Blues if you wear a suit, 'less you happen to be an old ethnic person, and you slept in it. 12. Do you have the right to sing the Blues? Yes, if: a. you're older than dirt b. you're blind c. you shot a man in Memphis d. you can't be satisfied No, if: a. you have all your teeth b. you were once blind but now can see c. the man in Memphis lived d. you have a retirement plan or trust fund 13. Blues is not a matter of color. It's a matter of bad luck. Tiger Woods cannot sing the blues. Gary Coleman could. Ugly white people also got a leg up on the blues. 14. If you ask for water and your darlin' give you gasoline, it's the Blues. Other acceptable Blues beverages are: a. wine b. whiskey or bourbon c. muddy water d. black coffee The following are NOT Blues beverages: a. Perrier b. Merlot c. Snapple d. Slim Fast 15. If death occurs in a cheap motel or a shotgun shack, it's a Blues death. Stabbed in the back by a jealous lover is another Blues way to die. So is the electric chair, substance abuse, and dying lonely on a broken down cot. You can't have a Blues death if you die during a tennis match or getting liposuction. 16. Some Blues names for women: a. Sadie b. Big Mama c. Bessie d. Fat River Dumpling 17. Some Blues names for men: a. Joe b. Willie c. Little Willie d. Big Willie e. Blind Willie 18. Persons with names like Englebert, Britney, Elton, and Lakeesha can't sing the Blues no matter how many men they shoot in Memphis. 19. Make your own Blues name Starter Kit: a. name of physical infirmity (Blind, Cripple, Lame, etc.) b. first name (see above) plus name of fruit (Lemon, Lime, Kiwi, etc.) c. last name of President (Jefferson, Johnson, Fillmore, etc.) For example, Blind Lime Jefferson, or Cripple Kiwi Fillmore, etc. (Well, maybe not "Kiwi.") 20. I don't care how tragic your life is: if you own a computer- you cannot sing the blues. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 18:36:26 -0500 From: "Blair Fraipont" Subject: Re: triple albums NJC Hey, What about Frank Zappa's Joes Garage? All right...time to let this cat out of the bag... Covers 14 is done & in the can. I'm working furiously to finish up making copies for all you wonderful contributors, so hang on, they're coming! In the meantime let me go ahead and tell ya'll what awaits you in this most excellent collection: 1. Richard Isen - Willie ~ 'Nuff said...I've been singing his praises for over a month now. This cover is great. The whole record is fantastic. CDBaby, Amazon, or Clearsong.com will set you up. And he's even a JMDL'er - how cool is that? 2. Wally Whyton - Urge For Going ~ UFG set to a skiffle beat, this one is unique for sure, and very nice. And older than some of you on this list! 3. Lydia van Dam Group - People's Parties ~ This one puts a new spin on PP, giving it a jazz feel with a piano riff that echos Steely Dan...unbelievable! Lydia, I am SO in love with you it hurts! 4. Will Taylor - Black Crow ~ This is a new release, like Richard Isen's, the whole CD is incredibly good. The whole record is acoustic and features a string section. On this cut there's a female vocalist who sounds great, and with the strings doing their crow-like swooping throughout, it's a real winner. I can't get enough of this entire CD! 5. Mark Murphy - Barangrill ~ Yay! Our first Barangrill, and this one is very tasty, some cool latin-pop-jazz for you. And it's always nice to hear a male voice on these tunes. 6. Beth Orton - River ~ Another one from the "unreleased & rare" file...I'm a Beth junkie, I think she's one of the best things going. This is a version she recorded in a radio studio, the audio is great quality, and she puts her own touch on the song. Very nice!! 7. Luke Bloom - Urge For Going ~ I'm also a big fan of Luka's, and this record of covers he does (Keeper of the Flame) is super! What an ear he has for a good melody! And he's a huge Joni fan too! 8. English Girls - Help Me ~ A fairly straightforward version, this is another one from the "Came Upon A Child of God" collection. 9. Denise Norton - Woodstock ~ This is a funny one, because when she starts, you think you're gonna hate it, but by the time she's done and her & the pianist have given this song a workout, you're standing up & cheering! Very original piano arrangement. 10. Marian Hoiting Kwartet - Carey ~ I'll try not to dwell on the fact that Marian looks like Claudia Schiffer, and focus on her musical talents, which are indeed many. This is yet another great jazz treatment of Joni from Holland. Marian, if you're lurking, I was just kidding about Lydia - it's YOU I'm mad about! 11. The Assembled Multitude - Woodstock ~ This is an early 70's instrumental, sounds dated but has a very pure sound, nice arrangement and very cool to hear all the percussion and sweeping harps! 12. Stan Getz - Both Sides Now ~ Can you believe you get all the way to track #12 before you get a BSN? This one's also about 30 years old, and Stan turns in a satisfactory performance, his solo doesn't step out too far. 13. Barbara Higbie - Rainy Night House ~ I love Barbara's piano playing, and I've been a fan of hers since I picked up on Montreaux and their Windham Hill stuff. She's got a great Fred Simon/Joni Mitchell touch on those keys, and because this one's an instrumental, you can pretend it's karaoke! 14. Ronnie Aldrich - Woodstock ~ Another 70's instrumental version, this one bases itself on Mathews Southern Comfort's arrangement. Again, it has a majestic sound that may sound dated but I'm a real sucker for. 15. Ballroom Band - Both Sides Now ~ Somebody get the hook! This one sounds like your Uncle Herman playing his new Lowrey Genie Organ with the "Samba" key turned on..."Play Red River Valley again, Uncle Herman!" But hey, it's a Joni song you can dance to! 16. Donal Leace - Midnight Cowboy ~ This one's really curious, because I don't have anything to compare it to. It's Joni's song, but I've never heard what she does with it. But this is a very significant addition to our collection, and a nice folk-rock performance by Donal Leace. And also hard to get!! 17. Andy Milne's Cosmic Dapp Theory - Free Man In Paris ~ NOW we're talkin'! Joni would love this 8 minute funk-jazz treatment of this tune...starts out with a nice female vocalist, then throws in some funky rap vocals, then a great instrumental piano jam...WOW, what a recipe for a great cover! 18. CPR - For Free ~ Another "rare & unreleased can't buy it in the store" selection, David Crosby gives Joni some high praise in the introduction, and CPR gives the song a superb workout with some really nice pedal steel. There you have it! 18 tracks, over 73 minutes of goodness! Hat's off to our contributors: Richard Isen William Burnworth Rob Etteridge Monica Gary Zack John van Tiel Me Getting a copy is easy. Just guess a 3-digit number between 000 & 999. Whoever's closest wins! What could be simpler? Here's the catch...don't send your lotto guess to the list, it would be the stupidest thread in history. Just send me a private message with your three digit number. I've already told THE MOLE what the number is, so I'm not gonna pull a fast one here... In order to give everybody a fair shot, I'll keep the contest open through Saturday at midnight. On Sunday, I'll announce who won! Remember, just send your guess to me, not to Joni@smoe.org... I really had no idea that these were the lyrics. It saddens me to think that Elton John, or any of the other "celebrities" would give his stamp of approval to this stuff. I wish that the market (rather than 'the' censor), dictated by people's sense of right and wrong, would crush such vile stuff. It doesn't. Why? Am I just a naive liberal wishing for a better world? Makes me want to cry, vomit, write a letter. If I'm ever wanting to be as cool as Elton John in pursuit of my own career, I hope someone cuts me down. Brett - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@jmdl.com [mailto:owner-joni@jmdl.com]On Behalf Of Vince Lavieri Sent: Tuesday, February 20, 2001 4:27 PM To: joni@smoe.org Subject: FWIW NJC For what it's worth, on Eminem and the Grammies Gays Frustrated by Eminem Updated 12:19 PM ET February 17, 2001 By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY, AP Music Writer NEW YORK (AP) - When gay college student Matthew Shepard was beaten to death three years ago, Elton John spoke eloquently about the need to eradicate hatred and discrimination against homosexuals. "The more people moan about him being there, the more people moan about what he's saying, the more records he seems to sell." --- On the Net: Eminem: http://www.interscope.com GLAAD: http://www.glaad.org Grammys: http://www.grammy.com ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2001 #86 **************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
