I agree here - it would be easier if these were 17 or 18 year olds (voting and drinking age in NZ - not that that necessarily means anything) and better able to make informed decisions, but I think 13 is a little too young, and a little too impressionable, from what I know of 13-year-olds! They would/will need firm guidance and strong direction in their thinking, but even then I think 13 is too young. In the south that kind of >attitude is built into the fabric of some these families. At some point >someone has to educate the children that is wrong to hurt other people. living in the worst part of the south - south africa - i really have to comment on the racial/hate thread. i was brought up in a typical south african home. blacks were "kaffirs", indians were "coolies" etc. absolutely no thought was given to their welfare or interests. this attitude is still prevalent, and in some cases, worse, amongst a lot of folk these days. there are people i know who, to this day, will not even switch on to the government tv channels, as they are "kaffir t.v." funny enough - i never, ever had any kind of a problem with other races tho. when i got older & started working, i actually found i had more friends among the indian & coloured community, than whites. (i think the only reason that i didnt have any black friends was just because i never had much contact with them). it was a bit of a problem tho. we could only go to hotels which had so-called "international" status. no movies, beaches, nothing. that has changed now fortunately. i was even proclaimed an "honorary coloured" by my predominantly coloured staff ; ) how did i pick up my "enlightened attitude"?. i dont really know - i probably shouldnt be. my family was racist, most of my school friends were racist - some of them were people who regularly indulged in kaffir bashing, and even one friend whose ambition was to shoot a kaffir. and all except the mildest of anti racist writings/songs etc. were banned. (an interesting side to this was the dumping of vinyl music by a local radio station when they converted to cd. all the albums were sold to a local music shop were they could be picked up for absolute bargains. the notes on the covers, saying which songs could be played, & which couldnt was quite an education - i spent many hours browsing through them) somehow i was different. i had compassion for people. doing my national service was an education. i saw what people did to the blacks. things that made me puke (literally). i saw people turned instantly into quivering, panicked wrecks, just by the mere threat of turning them over to the police. i saw homes and shebeens (private pubs) raided, just because the people i was with knew that the owners would give them beers to go away. i saw the supposedly civilised people i was with cheering like crazy when we had a training film showing white cops beating a black man (the footage was removed from a bbc camera crews luggage, while it was being loaded on a flight. the crew was not even informed - they just got back to the uk & found it was gone) eventually i just refused to go on the patrols. i stayed behind, and guarded the base, or the vehicles, and felt a whole lot safer. safer from the people i was with, not the blacks. i also came under investigation for my friendship with other races, and because i played their music. my military file had big red writing across the cover "geen bevordering" (no promotion) now things have changed. legally. but not peoples attitudes. we now have a constitution which guarantees freedom of speech. with an exception - hate speech. funny enough, even with my background & attitude, the fact that peoples freedom of speech can be restricted, makes me very, very scared. no matter how hard you try you cannot legislate peoples thoughts or attitudes. smacks to me of "thought police" so, my opinion? give people their freedom of speech. even hate speech. but not criminal speech. people that saying that they hate other people, should be allowed. people insulting other people should be allowed. people inciting other people to criminal activity should however not be allowed. if the hate speech crosses the boundary from e.g. "i hate blacks" or "all whites are racists" to "kill all blacks" or "one settler, one bullet" then, action should be taken. i also think that children should be exposed to differing viewpoints, in a controlled manner. just like everything else in life - they should be informed and allowed to make their own opinions. ron ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 08:07:46 -0500 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Sunset pig, NJC McRib sandwich for dinner? << A sunset pig Working 2 jobs, Lama ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 09:04:54 -0500 From: "Diane Evans" Subject: kkk and 13-yr-olds NJC (long) Friends, This has been an interesting thread and one somewhat related to the recent 'Darn Kids' thread. This is also an ongoing and heated debate within schools and communities. My response comes from the perspective of teacher of jr. high school in a rural community as well as parent. Teachers today are charged with promoting moral responsibility to our students. It's a heavy responsibility and one more fitting to parents, but too many parents avoid it. [Work too much, can't control kids, too drunk, etc.] Many students get to us with years of subversive / subliminal or, sometimes overt training in hate from their parents. KKK is alive and quietly thriving in small communities. So, how do we teach our children to respect another's right to free speech while thromping the message? Understand: kids at this age are highly emotional and prone to act within hormone-promted responses rather than cool logic. (Remember the Salem witch trials? Joan of Arc?) Understand: a huge proportion of these kids learn charged attitudes from MTV. (I feel really old saying this, because I was addicted to MTV in its early years. After years of training in the studio and richly diverse life experiences, I'm far from a prude, but I feel quite Victorian when I watch MTV these days...it's not the subject, per sey, but the negative attitude toward the subject that I find offensive. But, I digress...) Our kids have access to so much more than we did at that age, purely by virtue of the internet. We cannot turn a blind eye to what they see and do when they are not with us. In our school alone we have lost two students in as many years because they found out about autoerotic asphixiation on the internet. My point is that without a guide to understand what is being disseminated a _young_ teen lacks the experience to always make good decisions. And, NO, I am not suggesting that we delve into outre sexual education... We cannot simply trust that the kids will inherently understand what is right or wrong. We have to teach them that. We have to hope that those teaching our children are motivated to work for peaceful resolution of conflicts. There are so many bright young minds out there! How much better it is to encourage them to work toward positive ends rather than mindless violence. Emotionally I think our kids would be better prepared to deal with these issues in high school. They are, however, often targeted by extremist groups because of their volitile emotions. In the end, I would support the education of kids regarding things like the KKK. I do not support visiting the web sites in school. They already know how to find those sites and will do so on their own time if they are motivated enough to do so. It becomes our collective responsibility to teach them it's not worth the time to do so. And, yes, it is tough to do without becoming the thought police. The right information that kids sometimes recieve from others is sometimes wrong, but often more correct or right for them than the information that their parents gave us. That's why we have minds. So we can make our own choices. And there is nothing more feeing than that. LOL I spent the after noon packing boxes bound for El Salvador and Honduras with a bunch of kids 13-18 ish. The thought of this thread crossed my mind as we were working and I resisted the temptation to disuss this with them, but I was struck at how bright most of them were. All of them very interested as to where I was "from" my heritage etc. And of course there they were trying to help out there fellow man instead of whatever else they could have been doing at the time. I think kids are alot smarter these days than perhaps we were in those days if you get my drift.. Producers get to make these decisions. And why would it surprise anyone that Branford would stick up for his younger brother's artistic decisions? Personally, I like Branford, Wynton *AND* Keith. Maybe Branford's point is that Jazz is too small to have a giant like Jarrett taking a big swipe at a major documentary on it. Personally, I think it was a major coup to fund a 17 hour special at all. Has anyone done 17 hours on country music? I can imagine it- but it would take someone courageous and visionary to "pitch" such a project, to fund it, to guide it. Someone who's very proud of his art form and its originators. Someone like Wynton Marsalis. If you think of the series as the history of Jazz from 1900 - 1960, it was excellent. I think Ken Burns brought the same understanding of race in America to "Jazz" that he brought to "Baseball" and "The Civil War". How could one properly tell the story of Jazz without talking about the abominable conditions faced by black Jazz musicans, singers, and arrangers? To borrow a phrase, lynchings and segregation were part of the Gumbeaux of jazz as surely as the drugs and the dancing. I admit that I don't know enough to argue about the proper emphasis or lack thereof of post 1960 artists like, well, Keith Jarrett and yourself, but I don't think that you fellas were necessarily the target audience. As a jazz neophyte, I found the sentimental aspect (to which Jarrett objected) was well suited to helping to endear early Jazz musicians to a wide, unfamiliar audience. Maybe Keith Jarrett felt slighted? I'm glad to read his comments, and yours too. I think that the controversy makes "good press" and keeps the topic alive, which is okay by me! Neat post. My two cents. Jim Who formerly thought that Mangione's "Chase the Clouds Away" and Getz/Jobim's "Desfinado" were pure jazz. Now, they sound like pop/jazz. Not that that's a bad thing. I love lots of pop/jazz. Fred Simon said, Ken Burns admittedly knew nothing about jazz going into the project, in fact, Wynton had suggested the topic to him and was subsequently tapped to mentor the film, thereby imprinting his own highly skewed agenda on the "history" of jazz, rendering it more of a museum piece than a living art. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 02:44:33 -0500 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: RE: HOSL's cover I think that Joni "lifted" the African tribe illustration on the cover of HOSL.
