I am a little puzzled by the Enya bashing. I only have "Watermark" but agree with what Chris T. wrote about her music being somewhat cutting edge when it first came out in the late 80s - it definitely sounded unique at the time. Maybe it sounds like all the rest of the New Age music to some now, but then I would have never thought to consider it that at all. To me is sounded more like some ancient Celtic hymms that had been electronica'ed into present day. There is a lot of beauty there. Being a Celt myself, I was quite taken by it on some ancestral memory level. But if Enya was *all* I heard all day, I might start getting a bit irritated ;-D Maybe the Irish listers Philip and Garret can give us their take (if they dare at this point!) > Joni has been given (by someone who apparently knows?) a 10 to 1 chance of > winning the best female pop Grammy. Joni was there. I have been seeing this guy, a very cool guy that some would call a major catch. He's been with me since I started navigating some very choppy waters some six months ago. Tonight, I told him it appeared we should not see one another again in the way we have. I am planning to return to a special place left behind. Before us. He was so upset. We sat together, in the cold, in front of his Los Feliz apartment for an hour talking, doing a post mortem on our days together. His hazel eyes fixed on my every word. Suddenly, I realized BSN was in the CD player of the car. As we sat there in the awkwardness of the night, sad yet resolved, I punched on COY. The words came through so clear. The music so real. I found myself with tears filling my eyes (a very rare event) and he was spellbound. It was the perfect end to an enriched time. That song takes on a whole new meaning to me, having heard it all these years, it never had a place in my heart until now. I am ready to move on to a place I belong. And I think he's ready to let go. My dear JMDL friends and lurkers -- your presence has made this an easier night for me -- someway, somehow. If she doesn't win a Grammy on Wednesday - she certainly won one tonight. It was in this beautiful 500 seat auditorium. First, Branford came on stage and gave a fifteen minute talk on the history of jazz. He's one of the funniest people I've ever heard speak. He mentioned that he thought Ken Burns was right to leave out the last thirty years in his documentary. He referred to something that Keith Jarrett wrote to the New York Times, criticizing the documentary and said that that was fine that if Keith wanted to come up with thirty million dollars and do his own documentary then more power to him, other wise he should "shut the hell up!" He talked about living in Lousiana, listening to a lot of funk and r&b, and not really getting seriously into jazz until he was 19. He also mentioned the grammies, how he's been nominated for a grammy several times but has never received one for jazz(twice for other genres) but that that doesn't matter too much because those people are not his peers. And he doesn't have much use for Emimem. The music was beautiful. The song I like the most was called "Requiem" which he wrote for his keyboard player who died recently. He did three other pieces and played for around an hour or so. I can't really describe it except that it was really, really good jazz. I like being at the Coca Cola building cause you can walk in the lobby and go to the coke machines and they are all free. And Paz, Branford said to say hello to you and he was wondering how you were doing. He agreed with me that you are a really cool cat. The riot is immortalized in Neil Young's "For What It's Worth." The TV story of the band and a double CD of Wings hits will be released worldwide in May. The Beatles Anthology-style project, which has been three years in the making, will be launched under the banner Wingspan. The two-hour film will reveal the inside story of Wings for the first time on television. Led by extensive and candid interviews with Paul McCartney, Wingspan reveals how, whilst trying to raise a young family and follow The Beatles, Paul and Linda formed a back-to-basics band that rose to become one of the biggest rock groups of The Seventies. Featuring never-before-seen home movie footage of Paul and Linda and their family, together with previously-private band archive and rare concert film, Wingspan will tell how Paul McCartney, devastated by the break-up of The Beatles, restarted his career from scratch - with him, Linda, their children, pet dogs and the band all driving around Britain in a van asking for work. Instead of arriving at stadium concerts in police-escorted limousines, Wings drove themselves to small halls unannounced and uninvited, and were paid for their impromptu shows in 50p pieces. Besides following Paul and Linda's private family life from 1970-1980, Wingspan reveals how - despite the headaches and handicaps of Beatles law suits, police pot busts and BBC airplay band - Wings soared to success with hit singles, No.1 albums and eventually even a bigger stadium show than that of The Beatles. Wingspan will be premiered primetime on American TV in early May and then broadcast around the world. Alongside the TV film, EMI/Capitol Records will release a double CD featuring 40 Wings songs, which will be supported by the re-issue of videos and promo films and a worldwide media, internet and advertising campaign. NJC Okay, here's a case for discussion. My sister-in-law is a librarian at a public middle school housing 13 year-old children in a rural atmosphere. She told me that they are studying the Ku Klux Klan so she, *the librarian* "opened up the web browsers so the kids could read the Klan's web sites firsthand". I was completely shocked. I said that kids should *never* have access to Klan sites in a public school. She countered with, "Well, that would be censorship. They should have free access to do research." I said, "No Anne. Let's say it's 1960 and there is no Internet. Are you saying that if the kids were studying the Klan, that you would allow the Klan to distribute a pamphlet (written *by* the Klan) to the school kids? Kids don't need to see the Klan's point of view in their own words. The Klan is pretty good at portraying themselves as a religious group and it might seem reasonable to a child if they are exposed to primary material, recruiting material from the Klan. "School children need to have the Klan *interpreted* for them. I mean, if not, there would be no stopping point. "In sex ed class, if you told the 13 year-old kids about masturbation, are you gonna distribute still photos of couples having sex so they can make up their own minds about pornography? Or let's say you're discussing Current Events. If there's a bomb on a bus in Israel, are you gonna distribute instructions on building pipe bombs? Are you gonna let 13 year olds read the manifestos of terrorists like the Unibomber too?" I think my sister-in-law is way wrong on this one. Other opinions? NJC >"School children need to have the Klan *interpreted* for them. I mean, if >not, there would be no stopping point. But they also have to read the literature first hand, in order to see THROUGH the code. Through my years in high school, my campus was littered with pamphlets from various neo-nazi/white supremacist/anti-gay/anti-whatever groups. What if i had simply been blindly taught that these groups were wrong in the past, and never been given the tools to know why? Then i pick up their literature, and it all seems reasonable to me, and i'm an easy target. Kids must be taught the truth about these people, and learn to read between their lies in order to really not buy into them. They need to understand the whys and wherefores and not just blindly know that they are wrong, because that leaves them open for conversion. In large Jewish populations, i know that it's pretty much customary to show all Junior High students "The Wave." It's this film of a class of students who's teacher teaches them class pride to the extent that they will not talk to anyone from another class and are willing to hurt their friends if they don't go along with the movement. At the end, the teacher tells them that this is now Hitler got his troops. It's not well filmed, and i think it loses kids that way, but the message is clear and pertinent to kids of that age. If you don't know what you need to watch out for, you'll be easier prey.
