I'm going to introduce myself as a longtime JMDLer (three years) who was once a frequent poster but has become a lurker. I've made some really good friends on this list, and had the very great pleasure of meeting one of them tonight. Steve and Michele Dulson say hello! For three years, I've enjoyed Steve's pithy and succinct posts (to say nothing of his encyclopaedic records of every concert he's ever even heard of ;-), both on and off list. It was so great to finally meet Steve and Michele and spend an absolutely wonderful evening with them! One of these days, we should have a JoniFest here in Victoria. You Americans can just come up here and buy islands in your spare time, we are close to where Joni owns at least one of her pieces of real estate, and our climate is as close to perfection as it gets (i.e., never too hot, never too cold). What a great thing this JMDL is!! love to all, Roberto ps Kakki, they make GREAT martinis here! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2001 01:11:11 -0800 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: WhoooooHoooo!(NJC) Yes Victor, my belated congratulations on your girlfriends great concert & on your new job- how nice that it is sound related ! ******************************************** Kate Bennett sponsored by Polysonics www.polysonics.com hear the music at: www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/ www.katebennett.com www.cdbaby.com/katebennett www.amazon.com ******************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2001 11:10:57 +0100 From: M.Russell@iaea.org Subject: Re: unfortunate names of real people NJC My first dentist was called Dr. Slaughter. Cool story! It reminds me of last night at my weekly pub trivia quiz. There were several questions I related back to Joni, which I do often (and hence, should have answered correctly), and the most annoying was this: Molihre wrote a play about him Byron wrote a book about him Mozart wrote an opera about him Strauss wrote a poem about him I still can't believe I didn't get it, since the category was "Love", but the answer was "Don Juan." I was kicking myself! Another question was: "Beanie, stove-pipe and pork pie are all types of what?" I'm working on a Crosby Stills Nash & Young concert chronology for a book about them, which you might already be aware of. (More details at: http://utenti.tripod.it/FranzL/homepage.htm ) My attempt is to track down a list - complete as much as possible - of all the shows they performed, as main artists, or guests, separately or collectively (I don't need Neil Young solo). I'm also interested in benefit concerts, one-shot appearances, tv & radio performances. I have already more than 6,000 concert-dates from the early 60's until the recent gigs, but I'm sure there's still a bunch I have no info of, especially Byrds with Crosby, Crosby early 80's and Stills solo. Contributions from those who attended the shows are much welcome. What I'm looking for: - - date (possibly complete) - - venue, city and state - - band members - - track list (or performed known tracks) - - opening act or other acts on the bill - - any guest that joined them (or that they joined, if it was another artist's show) and the song(s) that they performed together - - ticket / concert-ad / flyer scan - - any interesting anecdote - - photos - - copies of reviews/interviews from the local paper re: the concert Any help would be much appreciated. At the book store where I spend way too much time and energy, we often have impulse items on the counter. This year, for Valentine's we sold those packages of little hearts with messages of be mine etc...so sweet and reminiscent of childhood dreams. I also enjoy the controversy here Marcel..the differing of opinions makes me think and challenges what I stand for....it IS a good thing to have different points of view. This week's have been HOSL & CMIARS. This morning my least favorite song from CMIARS came on, and it just has never grown on me. Still after all the listens I've given it, the melody is blah, almost non-existent, the production is poor with those plodding echoing drums, and on the whole I'm happy when it's over, if indeed I stick out the whole song. Joni's vocals are also poorly recorded, it's hard to make out a lot of what she says, even when I know the words! But I must say that lyrically there's maybe more going on then I give it credit for, although it seems to be disjointed in a "No Apologies" sort of way. I like the story of her parents' courtship, and the scene of the three of them listening to the radio together (reminds me of our Darn Kids thread), but wonder about the constant "Lay Down Your Arms" chant. It really becomes a distraction for me. <<"Sleep little darlin'! This is your happy home Hiroshima cannot be pardoned! Don't have kids when you get grown Because this world is shattered>> This section of the verse caught my ear...I wonder if this is the sort of thing that Joni constantly got from her Mom? If so, it would have made her pregnancy that much more difficult to deal with. Just wondering what some of your takes on this song are...I know I'm missing something, just can't seem to get a handle on what it is. The couple lives in the same house with Fredrik's son Henrik, a seminary student one year older than Anne. The lack of intimacy aside, things seem to be going tolerably well for the couple until they attend a comedy at the theatre that features Desirie Armfeldt, an actress with whom Fredrik once had an affair. Although Anne can't stomach the thought of sleeping with Fredrik, she doesn't like the thought of any other woman performing that particular service for her husband either, and when she notices Desirie making eyes at Fredrik, she demands to be taken home immediately. Once home, however, Fredrik can't stop thinking of his former lover, and when he goes to visit her, his eleven months of forced celibacy get the best of him, and he is soon in bed with the actress. No sooner have they done the deed, however, than they are interrupted by Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm, a married man with whom Desirie is having an affair. Malcolm is a self-proclaimed man of the world and knows how these things work, but the situation grows more complicated the next morning when the Count baldly relates the evening's events to his wife Charlotte who's little sister happens to be a girlhood friend of Anne's. Later, when the Count drifts to sleep, Charlotte decides to tip Anne off about Fredrik's activities. Meanwhile, however, Desirie has issued an invitation to Fredrik and his family to spend a weekend with her at her country estate. In spite of what she now knows, Anne decides to accept the invitation looking as young as possible so as to shame Desirie back behind her wrinkles. When Malcolm learns of the invitation, he announces that he and Charlotte will attend as well, invited or not, as he is detemined not to lose his mistress. Once all of the players arrive at the isolated estate, the stage is set for a sexually-charged weekend of thinly veiled accusations and unexpected revelations. A Little Night Music opened at the Shubert Theatre on February 25, 1973 with a cast that featured Glynis Johns (Desirie), Len Cariou (Fredrik), Victoria Mallory (Anne), Laurence Guittard (Carl-Magnus), and Patricia Elliott (Charlotte). The production ran for 600 performances and went on to win five Tony Awards including "Best Musical," "Best Music and Lyrics," "Best Book," "Best Actress in a Musical" (Glynis Johns), and "Best Supporting Actress in a Musical" (Patricia Elliott). The 1978 film version featured Elizabeth Taylor and Len Cariou. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2001 16:45:42 -0500 From: "Sue Cameron" Subject: Great post (NJC) Joseph, Just wanted to say what a great post! The 1978 film version featured Elizabeth Taylor and Len Cariou. Great synopsis, Sis! Although I have never seen 'A Little Night Music' performed I have read it and own the cast album on vinyl & cd. Every song in this musical is a waltz, written in 3/4 time. There are some other great songs from this show and some of the best lyrics I have ever heard from a Broadway musical. 'Send in the Clowns' comes toward the end of the show. Desiree is tired of 'The Glamorous Life' of being an actress and wants to settle down. Fredrik has come back into her life and is obviously ill-matched with the young & virginal Anne, so Desiree has decided she should marry him once he's free of his wife. However, at the point of the play where Desiree proposes this arrangement to Fredrik, he is not yet ready to give up his marriage. He apologizes to Desiree for 'flirting with rescue with no intention of being saved' and leaves her alone in her boudoir. She then sings: Isn't it rich? Are we a pair? Me here at last on the ground You in mid air Where are the clowns? Isn't it bliss? Don't you approve? One who keeps tearing around One who can't move Where are the clowns? There ought to be clowns Just when I'd stopped Opening doors Finally knowing the one that I wanted Was yours Making my entrance again With my usual flair Sure of my lines No-one is there Don't you love farce? My fault I fear I thought that you'd want what I want Sorry, my dear And where are the clowns? Quick send in the clowns Don't bother, they're here Isn't it rich? Isn't it queer? Losing my timing this late In my career And where are the clowns There ought to be clowns Well maybe next year. At the end of the play when many rather farcical goings-on have finally caused Fredrik to see the light, he & Desiree sing a reprise: Desiree: Isn't it rich? Fredrik: Are we a pair? You here at last on the ground Desiree: You in mid air Desiree: Was that a farce? Fredrik: My fault, I fear Desiree: Me as a merry-go-round Fredrik: Me as King Lear (musical interlude) Fredrik: Make way for the clowns Desiree: Applause for the clowns Both: They're finally here..... Some of the first vinyl lps I ever owned were movie soundtracks & original Broadway cast albums. The Broadway musical has change a great deal from the days of Rogers & Hammerstein. I think Sondheim refined it to its highest peak thus far and the score of 'A Little Night Music' is a prime example of what the form can be. Some day I hope to see a good stage production of it. It's due for a revival so maybe someday a good touring company will hit Seattle. Unfortunately, the movie was rather bad. I finally rented it a few years ago and although I love Elizabeth Taylor (she was a HOOT in 'These Old Broads the other night, btw) and I think she was ok as Desiree, the movie as a whole pretty much sucked. But anyway, that's the context of 'Send in the Clowns.' Thanks, Sis! Geez, Bob, worse than 'Dancing Clown'? I've never understood why a few people on this list hate this song. I believe it makes Sue McNamara cringe as well. It's always been one of my favorites from one of Joni's albums that I don't listen to very often. War is an underlying theme in the song and a force that has shaped the lives of this family. It was because of WWII that Myrtle met Bill the 'young flight sergeant on two weeks leave'. Joni was born during the war & would have been a toddler at the time the bombs were dropped on Hiroshima & Nagasaki. The effects of those events were very far reaching and there must have been a lot of people who wondered if there was any point to carrying on with life from one generation to the next. However, in the end, Myrtle has decided to carry on. 'Ah what does it matter? The wash needs ironing & the fire needs stoking.' Study war no more, study war no more, study war no more Another one of Joni's choral backdrops. I think it works. I like it.
