There was a > girl at the > University of Northern Iowa in the 70s named Fonda > Dicks. This cracked me right up! We got a letter at work from someone whose name is Follen Pickle! There are two women at work with odd names - one's first name is Summer (she's a Sagitarrius, though); the other's is... Precious! (Yikes!) There's another woman in one of the district offices whose name is Daphne Dingwall. I have a whole bunch more of these somewhere - one of my co-workers collects weird names, weird letters and strange turns-of-phrase from amongst all the letters we receive at work. Every now and then we go through them, just to alleviate the stress. I told him he should make a book of them and hope one day he will. My married name is Frank, and my husband's first name is Gert (which is German, and yes, it is the male form of Gertrude, and means pretty much the same thing as Gerard, Gerald, Gary, Garth or any of those names.) Needless to say, he has a lot of trouble *explaining* his name to people. They always assume his first name is Frank, or they want to know if "Gert" is short for something (like Gertude?) He once took a dizzy spell and fainted on a streetcar, so they called an ambulance and sent him to hospital. When I went to pick him up at Emerg, they couldn't find him at first - - because they had registered him as Ms. Gertrude Frank. Let me tell you, he don't look like no woman to me! Then, of course, there are the nicknames like Frankenstein and so on (ha ha) and I've had people ask me if I, by any chance, have a sister named Anne. Which, as it happens, I do, but she's not a Frank. And, of course, I can't resist, either. When I'm calling my husband, sometimes I'll yell, "Yo! Gert!" or I'll say, "Yes, he's Gert and he's rude - he's GERTRUDE!" and so on. Wheezing towards Wednesday... It was a Crosby-Nash benefit concert for Project Jonah (a save-the- whales organization) and the United Farm Workers. It took place at the Civic Auditorium in San Francisco on Sat. Dec. 14. The year was 1972 or 1971, but I know it was Saturday so you can check a calender for those years to be sure. Crosby and Nash played without a band. I was there and it was a great show. Graham Nash played two new songs on electric piano; "Wind On The Water" (or "For the Last Whale") and "Fieldworker". Crosby played a new song on guitar, "Carry Me". I don't often feel moved to dash off a gushing eulogy for a gig, but Tamara Williamson tonight was just sublime. I've probably mentioned her on the list before, but a quick recap: she's English and has been living in Canada for about 10 years. She used to be in a band called Mrs Torrance (check out the reference to The Shining), and now performs mostly solo, sometimes with a band. She is a superb singer and songwriter, with a sweet and true voice and songs that really speak to the heart and mind; some of them are a bit Siberryesque (high praise from me, as y'all know :-) - delicate, wry and utterly lovely. As if this were not enough, Tamara is also the most inventive exponent of "live sampling" I've ever seen - she plays a Gibson electric guitar, and "samples" both the guitar and her voice using echo and delay pedals, which she operates with amazing facility, creating beautiful harmonies, percussion sounds by hitting the guitar and'or the mic and looping, sometimes hitting a switch and making a particular sound come out backwards. If all this sounds like a bit of a mess, the wonder of it is that it doesn't, not at all - her humour and humanity shine through. Tonight, she was on stunning form, and the icing on top was a couple of musicians who'd been at her gig on Friday (which I was also at, and where she was heckled by some drunken arseholes, thinly disguised a Nick Harper fans. Anyway...), and asked to play with her (!) She accepted, and with virtually no rehearsal, they played quite brilliantly, one on violin and one on double bass. The violinist's playing was particularly tasty. And Tamara's new songs are extraordinary, covering subjects like Oswald Moseley (infamous English fascist), faceless housing projects, Andy Kaufman, and so on. Her song about the ill-fated attempt on Everest which was later documented in the book Into Thin Air, is spellbinding. If any of you get a chance to see this unique performer play live, I can only urge you to JUST DO IT! I'll add my 2 cents and say Hejira too, but certainly don't believe everything you read, especially in terms of reviews of Joni's work! Night Ride Home is one of my favourite albums, and should be purchased for the song "Two Grey Rooms" alone, which is far and away my favourite Joni track of all time! Basically, if you're buying Joni, you can't go wrong, although I will say that personally, I found Don Juan's Reckless Daughter and Mingus and little harder going "at first" - I love them now, it just took a little longer. There were, for instance, a race of miniature women, the Posall ("Perhaps Our Souls Are Little Ladies"), and men, the Mosalm ("Maybe Our Souls Are Little Men"). Siquomb was the queen of the mythology, her name meaning, "She Is Queen Undisputedly Of Mind Beauty."
