To be a witness to his courage was an experience well beyond any words I could ever write. To be a part of his healing has affected me deeply and how I see things. Something like watching black and white film only and all of a sudden seeing colours....or hearing the most magnificent sound for the very first time. Or something. So much beauty. Brian taught me some very big life lessons while I watched him go through so much in such a short time. I keep coming back to the same place of being in awe of his incredible strength and courage. The students said that the ' beast 'is a dangerous metaphor, because men are noit responsible for what the 'beast' does..I think it was a good lesson, but when I wanted the students to listen to the songs the cd player turned out to be ruined..what a pity, well I'll see them again on Wednesday with a new player.. I've always interpreted this to be about Chuck Mitchell. He was much more of a folk purist than Joni. She got rich and famous, and he kept on folking along. It's true that this song was written many years after the marriage ended, but Joni does seem to have a long memory! > "And you were in the parking lot > Subterranean by your own design > The virtue of your style inscribed > On your contempt for mine" > > Are these lyrics about Dylan???? I just started listening to an old album of theirs, "Broadsword and the Beast", and am realising what a talanted lyricist Ian Anderson is (at least I think he wrote their lyrics...) Broadsword... is full of nautical references, but also lots of the usual imagery to do with love and relationships, something I'm only just seeing this time around. "Flying Colours" describes two people trying to disguise a relationship break up, and "Slow Marching Band" says a lot about parting and loss, at least to me. To the nub of it then: I have "Broadsword..." and "Rock Island" (on a 12" picture disc, no less) and am looking for recommendations for what album(s) to hunt out next, given that I like these two. Well I'm only familiar with pre-80s Tull but I think Aqualung, Thick as a Brick, Benefit & Stand-up are all excellent albums. Living in the Past is kind of a compilation of past work but it is quite good as well. War Child is pretty good too. I agree that Ian Anderson wrote some great lyrics. Also played a mean flute at one time. Probably still does? Mark in Seattle Who would be a poor man, a beggar man, a thief If he had a rich man in his hand? If you like "Rock Island" you should definately get "Crest of a Knave" which is an excellent album and came right before Rock Island. "Under Wraps" is in a similiar vein to "Broadsword" and has some nice songs on it but is not as strong as an album. I would also delve back a little and explore some of their early work like "Benefit", "Minstrel in the Gallery", "Stand Up", and "Songs from the Wood." And that's just barely scratching the surface. Their recent work ,"Jethro Tull.Com" I thought was a good effort as well but I have not latched on to it as much as some of their more classic albums.
