Endless speculation big time on a song that shivers me timbres, so to speak, each and every time I hear it. The sheer obscurity of the words , for me anyway, lends to the never-ending wonder of the song. :-) Definitely one of her most impenetrable and I'd be quite happy to leave it that way, though should we ever be enlightened as to the meanings of Petrified wood and Ethiopian wall and ... I'll sure lend an ear. From day one, the entire song (to be heard as a whole) blew me away and only years after when I found the guitar tuning and tried to play it, did I realise I couldn't and never would be able to. She went up in my estimation even more. DITS is in my top 5 for sure if not top 3. In no particular order, though as is so often said here on the Line, tomorrow's choice might be different. Don't Interrupt the Sorrow Song for Sharon Down to You Ludwig's Tune Don Juan's Reckless Daughter No, it's impossible to choose just five. Funny though that three of them begin with Do. Doh a dear Joni. I see Joni's work having three principle eras with a fourth emerging. STAS to LOTC / FTR is her first period. FTR / C+ACY-S to DJRD / Ming her second. Ming to TI / TTT her third. TTT / BSN her current. I'll stick my neck out and say there's a treading water time in those lost 80s. That's how I see it anyway and the five songs I've aforementioned all belong to the second phase. That's when I found Joni and I suppose it's the one era that I relate to most. Biased opinion of course but I think it's her best. Nilsson was asked to write a song 'like' it, and came up with his song, which I guess Schlesinger or whoever made the call didn't like as good as Neil's song. Sorta like Ray Parker Jr. was asked to write a song 'like' Huey Lewis' "I Want A New Drug" and came up with "Ghostbusters"...it was a little TOO like it, though, and a lawsuit resulted... Harry's song wound up on the brilliant "Harry" record, along with "Morning Glory", probably one of the first records about the homeless. btw...anybody ever heard of a Reprise CD called "Hits & Misses Sampler", (12 tracks). The building is on the market now for $1.5 mil if anyone is interested. Its a groovy dark place on the edge of the french quarter. Ani diFranco put an offer in for the place, but was turned down for too low a bid. Lots of cool records were made there like: subdudes Lucky, EmmyLou Harris Wrecking Ball, Sheryl Crows follow to to Tuesday Night.., Peter Gabriel Us, Squirrel Nut Zippers Hot + a couple of others, REM recorded there, + many many more. There was over a hundred projects come thru there over the ten years it was here. The manager Karen Brady recounted one of the most memorable moments for her was Neil Young slow dancing with his wife to and EmmyLou song during that session. I have a couple of memories from that space and time. One Jazz Fest I was invited there for a party and Carole King was there. Dan set up his band at the bottom of the huge staircase and treated us to some songs. Carole sang Chains with him. Aaron stopped in and sang God On Our Side all with Brian Blade on drums most of the evening. Bill Dillon was on guitars and guitorgan (check him out on TI and NRH). It was an incredible evening. I sat in one of the big rooms during the evening and played Chinese Cafe on the Grand Piano. Some girl came up to me and asked me if I had written the tune and I told no that Joni Mitchell had written it. "Oh!", she said, "who's that?" I don't think she really wanted to know, it was probably more of a "are you famous?" type of thing. My friend Joe recorded his album The Scoundrels Waltz there and there's a couple of things I better NOT post about that experience. I know Joni was there at some point and I think there was some discussion of her doing something there and/or Lanois producing a record for her. I know Dan was responsible ofr turning her on to Brian. It is so sad to see the old place go by the wayside. Such a shame he's had to sell-up...yet another victory for cynically-marketed pap. Is there anyhwere online that a Brit can read/see this article in full??? Best wishes, Jason. http://www.the-slipstream.co.uk (which doesn't have enough Lanois content - I should put that right, I know...well, actually "So" is top of the all-time album list! I found that a fascinating story. I wonder what music would mean so much to me, I'd want to listen to it on my death bed. I think maybe I would want "Shadows and light" playing, before I die. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Jan 2001 23:12:27 -0500 From: BarBearUh Subject: Re: pontoon planes (NJC) Steve Dulson wrote: > Our favorite video maven BarBearUh wrote: > > >it is a beaver! it's a little plane shadow floating and disappearing > >and reappearing and stretching and contracting as it falls in and out of the > >cracks of this alaskan glacier. it's a really stunning shot > > Wow! The disarming alliteration. The metaphorical duality. The symbolic juxtaposition. The human frailty and mortality she lays bear. Her masterful personification of the inanimate opiate, and the imagery she creates from its accoutrement. The subtle way she creates seamless setting throughout the song. How she onomatopoetically sings "sweet." Every time I hear this song I find more gorgeous nuance. Even more awe-inspiring when one considers the visceral quality of the hypnotic music she weaves around this poetic genius. The opening chords and the feeling they evoke, acclimating the listener to the mood and message of the song. One can't help but empathize with her characters and dwell in the other-world she creates. Siquomb says it all. Thanks for pointing this one out, Mark. And I thank whatever gods may be for Joni. All my love is due her. - -Julius np: Cold Blue Steel & Sweet Fire ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Feb 2001 01:31:02 EST From: JRMCo1@aol.com Subject: Re: Lanois Studio Gone For Good Sweet post, Brother Paz. "Auld Lang Sine" started playing in my head as images of the performers you recalled were dancing between your lines and before my eyes. It occurs to me that I'm starting to visualize classic music and musicians documentary-style these days, what with the Jazz series and the Joni video trees on the forefront of my psyche. I don't mind. Yeah, I'm totally interested in buying the place! Think they have change for a 2 million dollar bill? Let's go escrow. Thanks for the memories. A group of people who work with me were taken out to dinner this evening by the locals - to a place in Venice called "Hal's". As we were being seated, I noticed a lot of artwork hanging on the walls. I began looking around at the paintings and turned to see the one right behind my chair on the wall. It was an original Joni Mitchell painting! Even more bizarre was that fact that it was one of only about two pieces of her artwork that I have displayed on the JMDL site - seen here http://www.jmdl.com/credits.cfm Go figure....
