The first two items had me sitting in front of the television with tears in my eyes. Today, a report was released into pathology practises at the Alder Hey hospital in Liverpool, UK. One pathologist spent years stockpiling organs taken from child autopsies, without parental consent. A combination of his deceit and weak management meant that it's taken years for the truth about this to become fully known, some families having held multiple funerals for their children as more stored organs came to light. The thought of discovering that one's relatives had not be buried whole, and that one's wishes had been ignored regarding the scope of an autopsy, is just horrible. There then followed the first coverage that I've seen of the earthquake in India. Estimates range from 20,000 dead to 100,000. I knew some days ago about the quake, but hadn't seen any coverage until now. At times like this, I feel very lucky to be where I am (in terms of geographical location, and life), very insignificant, and very very powerless. Sobering. Depressing. - --Chris ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Jan 2001 17:39:13 -0500 From: "Victor Johnson" Subject: Re: Never Ever Too Late NJC Subject: Never Ever Too Late NJC > Well the subject line says it all. Hi Mark, First, I have to say this is one of my favorite JM songs of all time, as well as a source of endless speculation for me.I also agree with much of your very interesting interpretation of these lines, but I've wondered if the 'notches' also could refer to JM herself, as being just another 'notch' on his bedpost, far more degrading to a woman than simply saying," You drove me to drink with your independent ways".For a woman to be made to feel by the man she loves as nothing more than a sexual conquest is even worse, IMO.Since the last line of the song indicates he was cheating on her,( " it takes a heart like Mary's these days when your man gets weak") But your explanation also fits in with the crude " liberation doll " comment he makes to her, attempting to make her feel responsible for his own weaknesses. Interesting... Now, about the line, " And he chains me with that serpent to that Ethiopian wall ": Could mean that she feels enslaved ( as the Ethiopians have been) to him , possibly by love, or perhaps by sex,or both. Remember the line," We walked on the moon, you be polite"- it all ties in. Maybe you or someone out there could help me with " Petrified wood process tall timber down to rock". I realize in the preceding lines she's finally getting up the courage to leave this loser, proclaiming her independence("Since I was 17 I've had noone over me"), but I've always struggled with this next line, so * help* !! His IQ was zero and his head was up his tush. He drank like a fish while he drove all about. But that didn't matter 'cuz his daddy bailed him out. DUI, that is. Criminal record. Cover-up. Well, the first thing you know little Georgie goes to Yale. He can't spell his name but they never let him fail. He spends all his time hangin' out with student folk. And that's when he learns how to snort a line of coke. Blow, that is. White gold. Nose candy. The next thing you know there's a war in Vietnam. Kin folks say, "George, stay at home with Mom." Let the common people get maimed and scarred. We'll buy you a spot in the Texas Air Guard. Cushy, that is. Country clubs. Nose candy. Twenty years later George gets a little bored. He trades in the booze, says that Jesus is his Lord. He said, "Now the White House is the place I wanna be." So he called his daddy's friends and they called the GOP. Gun owners, that is. Falwell. Jesse Helms. Come November 7, the election ran late. Kin folks said "Jeb, give the boy your state!" "Don't let those colored folks get into the polls." So they put up barricades so they couldn't punch their holes. Chads, that is. Duval County. Miami-Dade. Before the votes were counted five Supremes stepped in. Told all the voters "Hey, we want George to win." "Stop counting votes!" was their solemn invocation. And that's how George finally got his coronation. Rigged, that is. Illegitimate. I've always had major problems with them, but yet I still watch and cheer if someone I like "wins." My problems with them are: 1) They usually ignore a VAST number of talented (yet lesser known) artists, 2) The categories are too broad and they end up throwing very different artists together (for example, Joni and Christina A. - light years away from each other musically). 3) They supposedly honor musical quality, but most of the nominees are groups who have sold millions of albums in the past year. <<< I feel that same conflict kerry. Like last year when Christina Aguilera beat out Susan Tedeschi I was not really surprised but it made no sense to me, musically, at all. People vote for what they're familiar with, I guess, and what they're familiar with is the music that's rammed down our throats on the radio these days. Unfortunately, this won't change any time soon. The highest CD sales are in the age 13-17 category, kids today have a huge amount of disposable income and they spend it on music (or they talk their parents into buying it for them)... hence the teeny-bopper diet we're fed on most (not all) radio stations. I have to say though, I'm like you... I'll be watching and hoping that Joni does win a Grammy. Besides, it's getting fashionable to like Joni so maybe we'll see a miracle and she'll sweep all the categories BSN is nominated in. Well I can't say exactly what Joni meant cause I wasn't there...but when I hear it I think of 2 very passionate people, two people with a fire inside so to speak. In my own experience when two people like this get together it's not really evident who was the one to initiate the blaze that follows, as it just happens with no explanation or understanding. It takes over your who body...that warmth is so comforting and needed...."all I ever wanted was to come in from the cold". That's just my spin on it. I have enjoyed reading the favorite lines posts as some of them really hit me, and make me think, some of them I didn't think of myself but hit me when I saw them. Jericho being one of them.
